A Solo Adventure in Gros Morne National Park
Day 4: Conquering Gros Morne: A Mountain, a Shore, and a Treasure
Hiked Gros Morne Mountain, explored Green Point's geology, and found treasures in Rocky Harbour. A day of natural wonders and local charm.
A Day of Triumph and Discovery
Today was a day of incredible highs, both literally and figuratively. From the challenging ascent of Gros Morne Mountain to the fascinating geological wonders of Green Point and the charming shops of Rocky Harbour, I truly immersed myself in the heart of Gros Morne National Park. Days like these are why I started this solo adventure, seeking both physical challenges and moments of serene connection with nature.
My day began with an early breakfast at Back Cove Café in Cow Head. I fueled up with a hearty meal, knowing I’d need the energy for the Gros Morne Mountain hike. I opted for their famous fish and chips, which was delicious and reasonably priced. The batter was light and crispy, and the fish tasted incredibly fresh. It's a humble spot, but the food is honest and satisfying, the perfect start to a day of adventure.
The drive to the Gros Morne Mountain trailhead was stunning. Even though it's October, and the weather can be unpredictable, I was lucky to have a crisp, clear morning. The forecast did mention a chance of rain later in the day, so I packed my rain gear, just in case. October in Gros Morne means cool and breezy conditions. The average temperature is between 3°C and 9°C, so layering is key.
Arriving at the trailhead, I took a moment to appreciate the sheer magnitude of Gros Morne Mountain. It loomed large, a challenge etched against the sky. I knew this hike would test my limits, but the promise of panoramic views from the summit spurred me on. The Gros Morne Mountain Trail is about 16 km (almost 10 miles). It's considered a difficult hike, and most people take around 7-8 hours to complete it.
The initial part of the trail, the approach, was a relatively easy 4 km. The path wound through a beautiful mixed forest, alongside a stream. The new trail design is well put together, very wide and accessible. I passed a lovely waterfall and admired the vibrant colors of the autumn foliage. Even this early into the hike, the views of the Tablelands were breathtaking.
As I reached the base of the mountain, the real climb began. The trail became steeper, rockier, and more demanding. It was a challenging ascent, requiring both stamina and careful footing. There were sections where I was practically scrambling over loose rocks. I was grateful for my hiking boots, which provided the necessary ankle support and traction.
The mountain taught me a valuable lesson: the greatest rewards often lie at the end of the most challenging paths.
The higher I climbed, the more dramatic the scenery became. The views stretched out behind me, encompassing the coastal plains, the Tablelands, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean. The wind picked up, and the air grew noticeably colder. I paused frequently to catch my breath and soak in the incredible vistas.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, I reached the summit. The sense of accomplishment was immense. The panoramic views were even more spectacular than I had imagined. The world stretched out before me in all directions, a tapestry of mountains, forests, and ocean. Despite the wind and the chill, I lingered at the summit, savoring the moment and capturing photos to remember this incredible achievement.
The descent was just as challenging as the ascent, perhaps even more so. My knees protested with every step, and I had to concentrate to avoid slipping on the loose rocks. I was relieved when I finally reached the base of the mountain and began the trek back along the approach trail.
Back at the car, exhausted but exhilarated, I changed into dry clothes and started the drive towards Green Point Geological Site. Located off Route 430, it’s a short drive north of the Green Point campground. I was eager to explore this unique coastal area, known for its geological significance.
Arriving at Green Point, I was immediately struck by the dramatic seaside cliffs. The layered rocks told a story of ancient oceans and geological upheaval. Almost 500 million years ago, these rocks formed on the bottom of an ancient ocean. Green Point is a world geological benchmark, marking the boundary between the Cambrian and Ordovician periods.
I followed the short pathway to the shoreline, where I could examine the rocks up close. The layers of shale and limestone were clearly visible, each representing a different period in Earth's history. I imagined the ancient marine life that once thrived in these waters, now preserved as fossils within the rocks.
I also walked along the cliff-top pathway, enjoying the spectacular views over the point. The ocean stretched out before me, vast and powerful, a constant reminder of the forces that shaped this landscape. The weather was starting to turn, with dark clouds gathering on the horizon, but I was grateful for the chance to experience this remarkable place.
Before calling it a day, I decided to stop by Rocky Harbour. I wanted to explore the town and pick up a souvenir to commemorate my trip. I visited Treasure Box, a combination gift shop and café. It’s located right in the center of Rocky Harbour. I browsed the selection of handcrafted souvenirs and local art, admiring the talent and creativity of the Newfoundland artisans. I ended up buying a small carving of a puffin, a charming reminder of my time in Gros Morne.
For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Neddies Harbour Inn. The Black Spruce Restaurant, located within the inn, is known for its delicious Newfoundland cuisine. I started with the Gros Morne Greens, a salad of local greens, roasted beets, goat cheese, and candied pecans. For my main course, I chose the seared Newfoundland cod, served with pea risotto and slow-roasted tomato beurre blanc. The food was exquisite, a perfect blend of local flavors and culinary artistry.
As I sit here, reflecting on the day, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. Gros Morne National Park has exceeded all my expectations. The physical challenge of the mountain, the geological wonders of the shoreline, and the warm hospitality of the local people have created a truly unforgettable experience. Even though Fatima and Omar aren't here with me, I feel like I'm bringing a piece of this place back to them. Tomorrow, I plan to explore the town of Woody Point and visit the Woody Point Lighthouse [If statement tomorrow itinerary]. I'm also hoping to relax at the Merchant Warehouse Retro Cafe & Wine Bar [If statement tomorrow itinerary]. But for now, I'm content to rest and dream of the adventures that await.
I'm also reminded that I need to pick up insect repellent and sunscreen. I knew I forgot something!
