A Solo Adventure in Gros Morne National Park
Day 11: Farewell Gros Morne: A Last Day of Coastal Charms and Brews
Discover the beauty of Shallow Bay Beach, the history of Broom Point, and local flavors on my final day in Gros Morne National Park.
A Fond Farewell to Gros Morne
As my solo adventure in Gros Morne National Park draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences I've had over the past eleven days. From the breathtaking hikes to the tranquil moments spent in nature, this journey has been nothing short of transformative. Today, I'm determined to soak in every last bit of Newfoundland's charm before heading back to Bielefeld and my family.
My final day began with a hearty breakfast at the Buoy & Arrow Restaurant and Suites in Rocky Harbour. The harbor view was stunning, and the promise of a full day of exploration ahead made the Newfoundland cuisine even more satisfying. I savored every bite, knowing I'd soon be back to my usual German fare. After breakfast, I packed up my camping gear, feeling a tinge of sadness that this part of the adventure was coming to an end.
First on the agenda was Shallow Bay Beach. As I drove towards Cow Head, the landscape was a tapestry of autumnal colors. The vibrant reds and yellows of the trees against the backdrop of the rugged coastline were a sight to behold. I couldn't resist stopping a few times to capture the scenery with my camera, wanting to preserve these memories forever. Arriving at Shallow Bay, I was immediately struck by the vastness of the sandy expanse. The soft, pale sand stretched for what seemed like forever, inviting me to take a leisurely stroll.

Despite it being October, the beach was still beautiful. Although the water was too cold for a swim, I enjoyed walking along the shore, feeling the cool breeze on my face. I watched as shorebirds clustered on the upper beach, a sure sign of the changing season. The tranquility of the scene was captivating. I spent a good hour simply wandering, collecting seashells, and enjoying the peace and quiet. It was the perfect way to start my last day, a moment of serenity before diving into more exploration.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like a quiet walk on a secluded beach.
Next up was Broom Point, a site steeped in history and culture. Driving from Shallow Bay, I felt a sense of anticipation. I had read about the Mudge family and their fishing enterprise, and I was eager to learn more about their way of life. As I approached Broom Point, the rugged coastline jutted out into the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a testament to the area's rich maritime heritage. The wind was stronger here, and the waves crashed against the rocks with a raw, untamed energy.

I explored the restored cabin and fish store, marveling at the artifacts and exhibits that showcased the Mudge family's life from 1941 to 1975. It was fascinating to see the tools they used, the boats they built, and the simple living conditions they endured. The Parks Canada guide shared stories of the family's resilience and resourcefulness, painting a vivid picture of their daily routines. I learned how the men fished for lobster and cod, while the women and children canned fish and cultivated gardens. Their lives were a testament to the seasonal cycle of nature, a stark contrast to my life in Bielefeld.
Walking around the grounds, I imagined what it must have been like to live in such a remote and challenging environment. The small cove and the nearby cemetery added a sense of solemnity to the site. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who came before us. I felt a deep appreciation for the Mudge family and their contribution to Newfoundland's cultural heritage. Before leaving Broom Point, I took a moment to reflect on the stories I had heard and the lessons I had learned. It was a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving our history and honoring the traditions of the past.
With the afternoon sun beginning to dip lower, it was time to grab some lunch. I stopped by The Cat Stop, a local eatery known for its delicious and comforting meals. I had heard great things about their seafood chowder, and I was not disappointed. The creamy, flavorful soup was packed with fresh seafood, a perfect way to warm up on a chilly October day. As I enjoyed my lunch, I couldn't help but think about Fatima and Omar. I imagined their excitement as I recounted my adventures in Gros Morne. I made a mental note to try and recreate the seafood chowder recipe when I returned home, hoping to share a taste of Newfoundland with them.

As the day wound down, I decided to treat myself to a local brew at the Western Newfoundland Brewing Co.. Although the brewery doesn't have a public brewhouse, I was able to find their beers on tap at a nearby establishment. I opted for a dark ale, its rich, malty flavor a perfect complement to the cool evening air. Sipping my beer, I reflected on my time in Gros Morne. I had hiked to the top of Gros Morne Mountain, explored the Tablelands, and cruised through Western Brook Pond. I had witnessed stunning sunsets, encountered friendly locals, and immersed myself in the natural beauty of Newfoundland. It was an experience I would never forget.

For my final dinner, I chose the Anchor Pub in Cow Head, drawn in by its reputation for hearty meals and local flavors. The pub was cozy and inviting, the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. I ordered a plate of fish and chips, a classic Newfoundland dish. The fish was fresh and flaky, the batter crispy and golden, and the chips perfectly salted. As I savored each bite, I listened to the lively chatter of the locals, feeling a sense of belonging in this close-knit community.

The Anchor Pub was more than just a place to eat; it was a gathering spot, a place where people came together to share stories and laughter. I struck up a conversation with a local fisherman, who regaled me with tales of his life on the sea. He spoke of the challenges and rewards of his profession, his deep connection to the ocean, and his love for Newfoundland. His words resonated with me, reminding me of the importance of community and the value of preserving our traditions.
As the evening drew to a close, I made my way back to my campsite, the sky ablaze with stars. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the gentle rustling of leaves. I sat by the campfire, sipping a cup of tea, and reflecting on my journey. I had come to Gros Morne seeking adventure, but I had found so much more. I had discovered a place of unparalleled beauty, a culture rich in history, and a community of warm and welcoming people. As I drifted off to sleep, I knew that Gros Morne would forever hold a special place in my heart.
Tomorrow, I will be making my way back to Deer Lake, ready to begin my journey back to Germany. It's always bittersweet to leave a place that has captured your heart, but I know I'll carry the memories and experiences of Gros Morne with me always. This solo adventure has reminded me of the importance of stepping outside my comfort zone, embracing new cultures, and connecting with nature. Until next time, Gros Morne! I will be back.
As I prepare to leave, I realize this journey wasn't just about seeing a new place; it was about finding a new perspective. I am grateful for the experiences, the people I met, and the lessons I learned. I hope my stories inspire you to embark on your own adventures, to seek out the beauty and wonder that exists in our world, and to cherish the moments that make life truly extraordinary.
