A Solo Adventure in Gros Morne National Park
Day 7: A Martian Landscape in Newfoundland: Exploring the Tablelands
Discover the otherworldly beauty of the Tablelands in Gros Morne, a geological wonder that feels like another planet. A day of unique sights!
A Walk on the Mantle of the Earth
Today was unlike any other day on this solo journey through Gros Morne. It was a day of geological wonders, of landscapes that felt both ancient and alien. I traded the familiar forests for exposed earth, a testament to the powerful forces that shaped our planet. It's a humbling experience to witness such raw, unfiltered history, a reminder of the immense timescales that dwarf our human existence.
My day began, as most have on this trip, with a hearty breakfast. I stopped at Treasure Box in Rocky Harbour. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee was welcoming, and I enjoyed a delicious breakfast. After breakfast, I decided to visit Under the Stump.

The morning was dedicated to exploring Under the Stump, which wasn’t just a quirky name but a portal to the heart of Newfoundland's traditions. I had booked a tour with Trina, who, with her infectious enthusiasm, promised to unveil the hidden gems of the park. As I drove to the location, I thought about Fatima and Omar. I know Omar would have loved the ATV tour. He is always so curious about everything.
The experience was more than just a tour; it was an immersion into the local culture. Trina shared stories passed down through generations, tales of survival, resilience, and a deep connection to the land. I learned about the Mi'kmaq people, their traditions, and their profound respect for nature. We foraged for wild berries, a sweet taste of the Newfoundland wilderness. The views were breathtaking, a panorama of rolling hills and rugged coastline.
The Earth doesn't belong to us; we belong to the Earth.
After a morning of cultural immersion and natural beauty, I was ready for lunch. I drove to The Old Loft Restaurant, a place recommended by several locals. The restaurant, housed in a restored fishing loft, exuded rustic charm. I savored traditional Newfoundland fare while overlooking the scenic South Arm of Bonne Bay. It was a perfect spot to reflect on the morning's adventures and recharge for the afternoon's main event: the Tablelands.
Explore the breathtaking Tablelands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Newfoundland and Labrador, where unique geological formations meet stunning landscapes.
The Tablelands, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were the afternoon's destination. As I approached, the landscape transformed dramatically. The lush greenery gave way to a barren, rocky expanse of reddish-brown earth. It felt like stepping onto another planet, perhaps Mars. This otherworldly landscape is, in fact, a part of the Earth's mantle, pushed to the surface by colliding continents millions of years ago.
I decided to take the Tablelands Trail, a 4-kilometer path that skirts the base of the mountain. The trail was relatively easy, allowing me to soak in the surreal surroundings. The stark contrast between the reddish-brown rocks and the clear blue sky was striking. I was amazed by the unique plant life that has adapted to this harsh environment, a testament to the resilience of nature.
I learned about the geology of the area, how the peridotite rock, rich in magnesium and low in calcium, creates a unique and challenging environment for plant growth. It's incredible to think that I was walking on a piece of the Earth's mantle, a layer normally found far below the crust. It gave me a new perspective on the scale of geological time and the forces that have shaped our planet.
As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, casting long shadows across the Tablelands, I felt a sense of awe and gratitude. This was a landscape unlike any I had ever seen, a reminder of the raw power and ancient history of our planet. It was a humbling experience, one that I will carry with me long after I leave Gros Morne.
Before heading back to camp, I decided to treat myself to dinner at Augustus Jane Inn. The inn, known for its cozy ambiance and excellent food, was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploration. I enjoyed a delicious meal, savoring the flavors of Newfoundland cuisine.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Bonne Bay Inn. I enjoyed a relaxing drink at the bar. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and I chatted with some locals, learning more about the area and its people. It was a perfect way to end a day of geological wonders and cultural immersion.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by the diversity of Gros Morne National Park. From the lush forests to the barren Tablelands, this park offers a range of landscapes and experiences that are both awe-inspiring and humbling. It's a place where you can connect with nature, learn about the history of our planet, and immerse yourself in the local culture. As I prepare for tomorrow's adventures—a hike on the Lookout Hills Trail and a visit to The Arches Provincial Park—I am filled with anticipation for what this incredible park has in store. I am also thinking of Fatima and Omar and how much they would have enjoyed the Gros Morne Fall Fest. Maybe next year we can all come and visit this amazing place together.
Tomorrow, I plan to have breakfast at Earle's Restaurant before venturing out [Earle's restaurant]. For lunch, I am planning to visit Java Jack's Restaurant & Gallery [Java Jack's Restaurant & Gallery]. Dinner will be at Gros Morne Inn [Gros Morne Inn].
