A Day of Exploration and Wonder

Today was a day of embracing the diverse offerings of Gros Morne National Park. From the tranquility of cascading waterfalls to the vibrant marine life and the charm of local shops, it was a day filled with exploration and wonder. These are the days that make travel so rewarding, offering glimpses into the heart and soul of a place.

My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Jackie's Takeout in Rocky Harbour. I opted for a traditional Newfoundland breakfast – toutons with molasses, a delightful way to start the day. Fuelled up, I set off for my first adventure: Baker's Brook Falls.

The drive to the trailhead was beautiful. The autumn colors were in full swing, painting the landscape in hues of red, orange, and gold. The crisp air and the bright sunshine made for a perfect hiking day. I parked at the Berry Hill Campground, where the trailhead is located. As I started my hike, I was immediately enveloped by the serene balsam fir forest. The trail was well-maintained, and the gentle incline made it accessible for hikers of all levels. It was a refreshing change from the more challenging hikes I had undertaken earlier in the trip.

The forest was alive with the sounds of nature – the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the gentle murmur of the brook. About halfway through the hike, I came across a 'moose ex-closure,' a fenced-off area showcasing the impact of moose browsing on forest regeneration. It was fascinating to see the stark difference in vegetation inside and outside the enclosure, a clear indication of the significant role these creatures play in shaping the landscape.

As I continued, the sound of rushing water grew louder, signaling my approach to Baker's Brook Falls. The falls are actually a series of cascades tumbling over limestone ridges. The sight was simply breathtaking. The water plunged down the rocks, creating a refreshing mist that kissed my face. I spent a good hour at the falls, taking photos and simply soaking in the beauty of the surroundings. I even saw a few wildflowers still in bloom, a testament to the resilience of nature.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in conquering peaks, but in savoring the simple beauty of a waterfall and the quiet wisdom of the sea.
After my hike, I drove to Norris Point, eager to visit the Bonne Bay Marine Station. This research and teaching facility is dedicated to expanding knowledge of marine ecology and offers a range of services to students, researchers, educators, and the general public. As someone deeply interested in science and the natural world, I was excited to explore this unique attraction.

The marine station is nestled in a quaint coastal community and surrounded by the unparalleled diversity of the Bonne Bay area. I joined a guided tour led by one of the station's knowledgeable interpreters. The tour began with an overview of the station's research initiatives, focusing on the diverse habitats and marine life found in Bonne Bay. I learned about the station's efforts to study and protect this unique ecosystem, which is home to subarctic species, icy fjord basins, salmon estuaries and arctic kelp beds.

The highlight of the tour was the public aquarium, which showcases the local marine flora and fauna. The aquarium features interactive exhibits and touch tanks, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with various marine creatures. I was particularly fascinated by the touch tank, where I had the opportunity to handle live crabs, lobsters, and sea stars. The interpreter shared interesting facts about each species, enhancing the experience. I learned, for instance, that the sea stars in Bonne Bay can regenerate lost limbs, a truly remarkable adaptation.

After my enriching visit to the Bonne Bay Marine Station, I was ready for a late lunch. I drove to Woody Point and had lunch at Buoy & Arrow Restaurant and Suites. This restaurant is known for its locally sourced ingredients and stunning views of the surrounding natural beauty. I ordered the fish cakes, a Newfoundland specialty, and they were absolutely delicious. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to relax and refuel after a busy day of exploring.

With my appetite satisfied, I decided to do some souvenir shopping. I drove back to Rocky Harbour and visited Island Treasures, a local shop known for its authentic Newfoundland products. As I stepped inside, I was greeted by an inviting atmosphere filled with the aroma of freshly printed books and the delightful charm of handcrafted goods. The shop boasts an extensive selection of local crafts, from hand-painted ceramics to stunning knitted apparel.

I browsed through the various offerings, admiring the craftsmanship and attention to detail. I picked up a hand-knitted scarf for Fatima and a book about Newfoundland history for myself. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, sharing stories about the products and the local culture. It was a delightful shopping experience that left me with a deeper appreciation for the artistic spirit of Newfoundland.

For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a fine dining experience at Sugar Hill Inn & Chanterelles Restaurant in Norris Point. This restaurant is renowned for its upscale dining and emphasis on top-quality, locally sourced products. As I stepped inside, I was immediately struck by the elegant ambiance and the warm hospitality of the staff.

I started with the butternut squash soup, followed by the roasted rack of lamb. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. The restaurant also had an extensive wine list, and I enjoyed a glass of carefully selected wine that perfectly complemented my meal. It was a truly memorable dining experience that showcased the culinary excellence of Gros Morne National Park.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences I had. From the serene beauty of Baker's Brook Falls to the fascinating marine life at Bonne Bay Marine Station and the charm of local shops and restaurants, it was a day that captured the essence of Gros Morne National Park. I am grateful for the opportunity to explore this remarkable place and share my experiences with you.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Tablelands and Under the Stump. I am excited to discover more of the unique geological formations and natural wonders that this park has to offer. I might even stop by Bonne Bay Inn for a nightcap. Until then, good night from Gros Morne!
