As the sun began its ascent, casting a golden hue over the majestic peaks of the Cordillera Huayhuash, I found myself filled with a mix of emotions. Excitement for the comforts of home mingled with a tinge of sadness at the thought of leaving behind this incredible landscape. This final day of our trek was a culmination of challenges overcome, friendships forged, and memories etched forever in my heart. It was a day to savor every last moment of the Andean wilderness before returning to the hustle and bustle of city life.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted through the crisp morning air, courtesy of our incredible cook. After a hearty breakfast at Cordillera Huayhuash, fueling up for the day ahead, we packed our bags one last time, a task that had become almost ritualistic over the past nine days. I double-checked to make sure I hadn't forgotten anything, especially since I was still kicking myself for leaving my portable charger and extra pair of socks back in Toronto. With a final sweep of our campsite, we bid farewell to our temporary home and began our descent.

The trail led us through a landscape that was both familiar and ever-changing. The towering peaks of the Huayhuash range, which had been our constant companions throughout the trek, seemed to bid us adieu as we made our way down the mountain. The December air was crisp and cool, a refreshing contrast to the warmth of the sun. I paused frequently to capture the stunning views with my camera, trying to preserve the beauty of this place in digital form. I knew that even the best photographs could never truly capture the feeling of being here, surrounded by such grandeur.

Our morning was dedicated to what HIGH SUMMIT PERU SAC - Huaraz/Peru had prepared for us: Peruvian Mountains Trek Climb. As we descended, I couldn't help but reflect on the journey. It felt like just yesterday we were arriving in Lima, wide-eyed and eager to begin our adventure. Now, nine days later, we were seasoned trekkers, our bodies weary but our spirits soaring. The Huayhuash Circuit had tested us in ways we never imagined, pushing us to our limits and revealing a resilience we didn't know we possessed.

The mountains are calling and I must go.

The descent was gradual at first, allowing us to soak in the scenery and reminisce about our favorite moments from the trek. I recalled the time we shared stories around the campfire, the laughter echoing through the mountains. I thought of the breathtaking views from the mountain passes, the sense of accomplishment we felt as we reached each summit. And I remembered the simple joys of sharing meals, offering encouragement, and simply being present in the moment with my friends. I made sure I did some last-minute shopping at Cordillera Huayhuash.

As we continued our descent, the landscape began to transform. The rocky terrain gave way to lush green valleys, and the air grew warmer and more humid. We passed through small villages, where we were greeted by friendly locals who offered us smiles and words of encouragement. It was a humbling experience to witness their simple way of life, so different from the fast-paced world we had left behind. I couldn't help but think of my son, Zayn, and how much he would have loved to experience this with us. Perhaps one day, when he's a bit older, I'll bring him back here to share in the magic of the Andes.

Lunch was another delightful affair at Cordillera Huayhuash, a final opportunity to savor the flavors of Peruvian cuisine. We feasted on a spread of local delicacies, from hearty soups to savory stews, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. As we ate, we shared stories and laughter, reliving our favorite moments from the trek. It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that this would be our last meal together in the mountains.

After lunch, we continued our descent, the end of our journey now within sight. The trail became steeper and more challenging, testing our weary legs and resolve. But with each step, we were spurred on by the thought of reaching our destination and the promise of a hot shower and a comfortable bed. Aisha's encouragement kept me going; I really missed her on this trip.

Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, we reached the end of the trail. As we stepped onto solid ground, a wave of relief washed over us. We had done it. We had conquered the Huayhuash Circuit. We exchanged hugs and high-fives, celebrating our accomplishment and the bonds we had forged along the way. It was a moment I would never forget.

As we waited for our bus back to Huaraz, I took one last look at the mountains that had been our home for the past nine days. They stood tall and proud, their snow-capped peaks glistening in the afternoon sun. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to have experienced this incredible place and for the memories I had made with my friends. It was an adventure that had changed me in ways I couldn't yet fully comprehend, and I knew that I would carry the spirit of the Huayhuash with me wherever I went.

Dinner was at Cordillera Huayhuash, another hearty meal. As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the mountains, we boarded our bus and began the journey back to civilization. As the lights of Huaraz came into view, I felt a sense of excitement and anticipation. It was time to return to the comforts of home, to reunite with loved ones, and to share the stories of our adventure. But a part of me would always remain in the Huayhuash, among the towering peaks and the pristine lakes, where I had discovered a new appreciation for the beauty and power of nature. It was a trip that will stay with me forever.

And with that, our journey on the Huayhuash Circuit comes to an end. It’s been an incredible experience that I’m so glad I got to share with my friends. From the stunning mountain views to the challenging hikes, every moment has been etched in my memory. I’m looking forward to sharing these stories with Aisha and Zayn when I get back home, and maybe even inspire them to embark on their own adventures someday. For now, it’s time to head back to Toronto and get back to the daily grind, but I know that a part of me will always remain in those majestic mountains.

Tomorrow, I'll be heading back to Lima before catching my flight back to Toronto. While this marks the end of our trek, the memories and lessons learned will undoubtedly stay with me for a lifetime. The Huayhuash Circuit has not only been a physical journey but also a personal one, filled with moments of self-discovery and profound connection with nature.
