Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through Iceland’s geological wonders and cultural treasures. From the eerie lava fields of Dimmuborgir to the meticulously preserved turf houses of Bustarfell Museum, I felt like I was walking through different eras of this island's captivating story. It's days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo adventure – to connect with the heart of a place, to feel its history in my bones, and to share those experiences with all of you.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Katla. The views of the surrounding landscape were stunning, and the menu featured quality Icelandic ingredients. Fuelled up, I set off to explore the Dimmuborgir lava field.

Dimmuborgir: The Dark Fortress

Dimmuborgir, meaning Dark Castles or Dark Forts, is an area of dramatic lava formations located east of Lake Mývatn. Formed over 2,300 years ago during a volcanic eruption, the landscape is a labyrinth of caves, pillars, and jagged rocks. As I wandered through the trails, I was struck by the otherworldly atmosphere. The towering rocks and deep caverns felt like the ruins of an ancient, collapsed citadel.

The scale of the lava formations is incredible, with some pillars reaching up to 20 meters in height. It's easy to see why this place is steeped in folklore. According to Icelandic legends, Dimmuborgir connects Earth with the infernal regions and is even said to be where Satan landed after being cast from heaven. It’s a landscape that sparks the imagination, a place where every shadow seems to hold a secret.

I spent a few hours exploring the various trails, each offering a unique perspective on the surreal landscape. The summer vegetation provided a striking contrast to the dark lava, with moss and hardy plants thriving in the shelter of the rocks. I was captivated by the play of light and shadow, the way the sun filtered through the rock formations, creating an ethereal glow. As a photographer, I was in my element, capturing the textures and shapes of this extraordinary place.

The land here whispers tales of fire and ice, of folklore and resilience, reminding us that even in the darkest landscapes, life finds a way.

Bustarfell Museum: A Glimpse into Iceland's Past

After immersing myself in the dramatic landscapes of Dimmuborgir, I drove to Bustarfell Museum, located in Vopnafjörður. This beautifully preserved turf house offered a fascinating glimpse into Iceland’s rural past. Bustarfell is one of the oldest and best-maintained turf farms in Iceland, with a history dating back to 1532 when the same family bought the farm and has been owned by their descendants ever since.

As I approached the farm, I was struck by its quaint charm. The turf houses, with their red gables and grass-covered roofs, blended seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. It felt like stepping back in time, a world away from the modern life I know in Toronto. The museum offers guided tours, which are available daily in summer. The tour guide shared stories of the families who had lived here for centuries, their lives shaped by the harsh Icelandic climate and their deep connection to the land.

Walking through the various rooms, I was impressed by the attention to detail. The furnishings and artifacts provided a vivid picture of daily life in rural Iceland from the late 18th century to the mid-20th century. I saw three kitchens from different eras, each showcasing the technological advancements that had transformed Icelandic homes. It was fascinating to see how families had adapted to the changing times while preserving their traditions.

The museum also hosts various events and exhibitions, featuring old workmanship and local refreshments. I enjoyed sampling some traditional Icelandic cakes and coffee at the Hjáleigan Café, located next to the museum. It was a perfect way to end my visit, savoring the flavors of Iceland while reflecting on the rich history I had just experienced.

Lunch at Hunkubakkar Farm Restaurant

For lunch, I stopped at Hunkubakkar Farm Restaurant. This restaurant prides itself on using quality ingredients, mainly from its local surroundings, which is something I always appreciate when travelling. I enjoyed a delicious meal of grilled lamb, a signature dish of the restaurant. The lamb was tender and flavorful, and the vegetables were fresh and perfectly cooked. The restaurant had a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it a great place to relax and refuel before continuing my explorations.

A Touch of Reykjavik

In the late afternoon, I decided to do some shopping at The Heart of Reykjavik. This family-run gift shop offers a variety of products, including posters, postcards, jigsaw puzzles, mugs, and glassware, all featuring drawings of buildings in Reykjavik Centre. I picked up a few souvenirs for Aisha and Zayn, wanting to bring a piece of Iceland back home to them. The shop had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and I enjoyed browsing through the unique designs.

Dinner at Kjarr Restaurant & Bar

For dinner, I treated myself to a meal at Kjarr Restaurant & Bar. Known for its commitment to showcasing local ingredients and traditional recipes, this restaurant provided an authentic taste of Icelandic cuisine. The menu featured a variety of dishes that highlighted fresh seafood, succulent lamb, and seasonal vegetables. I opted for the lamb, which was expertly prepared and full of flavor. The restaurant's inviting atmosphere made it the perfect spot to relax after a day of exploring. I also enjoyed a glass of local craft beer, which paired perfectly with my meal.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences I had. From the geological wonders of Dimmuborgir to the cultural treasures of Bustarfell Museum, I had gained a deeper appreciation for Iceland’s rich history and natural beauty. It was a day that reminded me of the importance of preserving our heritage and connecting with the stories of the past.
