Day 2: Volcanic Vistas and Culinary Delights: Day Two in Iceland
Hiking volcanic trails and savoring local flavors in Iceland's stunning landscapes. A day of adventure and gastronomic discoveries awaits!
Landscapes of Fire and Flavor
Today was a day of dramatic contrasts, from the stark volcanic landscapes to the warm hospitality of local eateries. It’s amazing how much Iceland can pack into a single day, and I'm excited to share every moment.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Munkar in Kirkjubaejarklaustur. The cozy atmosphere was exactly what I needed to fuel up for the day's adventures. I enjoyed a traditional Icelandic breakfast which included some pastries and strong coffee. It was the perfect start before heading out to explore the volcanic trails.

First up was the Hverfjall Volcano Trail. The drive there was scenic, with vast lava fields stretching out in every direction. As I approached Hverfjall, its massive crater loomed impressively against the horizon. The hike up was invigorating. The trail is well-defined, and I reached the rim in about twenty minutes. The panoramic views from the top were simply breathtaking – Lake Myvatn, Dimmuborgir, and the surrounding lava fields spread out beneath me. I spent some time walking around the crater rim, soaking it all in. The wind was strong, but the views were worth it.

The raw, untamed beauty of Iceland's volcanic landscapes is a humbling reminder of nature's power.
Next, I ventured to Leirhnjukur, an active volcano near Lake Myvatn. This area is part of the Krafla volcanic system and is known for its dramatic geothermal activity. As I walked across the lava fields, I felt like I had stepped onto another planet. Steam vents and smoking fumaroles dotted the landscape, and the ground was stained with vibrant colors from the sulfur and other minerals. The last eruption here was in 1984, but the area is still closely monitored, adding an edge of excitement to the experience. I explored the small crater lakes with boiling geothermal waters, being careful to stay on the marked paths. The contrast between the black lava and the bright blue water was stunning.

For lunch, I stopped at Kjarr Restaurant in Kirkjubaejarklaustur. This restaurant is known for its fresh, locally sourced ingredients and traditional Icelandic dishes. I decided to try the Arctic char, which was recommended by the staff. It was served with baby potatoes, Parisian carrots, and a white wine sauce. The flavors were delicate and perfectly balanced, showcasing the freshness of the ingredients. The restaurant itself was charming, with a cozy atmosphere and friendly service.

As evening approached, I headed to Systrakaffi, also in Kirkjubaejarklaustur, for dinner. This family-run bistro is a local favorite, and I could see why. The menu was diverse, with something for everyone. I opted for one of their handmade pizzas, the “Mother Superior,” piled high with cheese, pepperoni, ham, onion, mushrooms, pineapple, peppers, and bacon. It was the perfect comfort food after a long day of hiking. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and I enjoyed chatting with some of the other diners.

To cap off the evening, I considered visiting SKY Bar in Reykjavik. It’s on the 8th floor of the CenterHotel Arnarhvoll and boasts spectacular views over Faxaflói Bay and the city. However, I decided to turn in early to prepare for tomorrow's adventures. I'm planning to visit Drekagil and Lake Askja, and I want to be well-rested.

Today was a reminder of why I love solo travel. It allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to linger a little longer at a scenic overlook, or to strike up a conversation with a local without worrying about anyone else's schedule. And as much as I miss Aisha and Zayn, I know that this journey of self-discovery will ultimately make me a better husband and father.
Tomorrow, I’m heading deeper into the caldera to explore Drekagil and Lake Askja. I've heard that the views are even more spectacular, and I can't wait to see them for myself. I might also stop by UNA Local Product / Sveitabúðin Una to pick up some local crafts. Stay tuned for more adventures from the heart of Iceland!
I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences of today, and I’m already looking forward to what tomorrow will bring. The beauty and tranquility of Askja Caldera are truly something special, and I feel privileged to be able to explore it on my own.
As I settle into my tent tonight, I can’t help but feel a sense of peace and contentment. The vastness of the Icelandic landscape and the solitude of solo travel have a way of putting things into perspective. I'm reminded of the simple joys in life – a warm meal, a stunning view, and the quiet stillness of nature.
And despite forgetting my insect repellent, the experience was still memorable. I will make sure to get some before heading out tomorrow. Also, I need to get extra SD cards for the camera. You can never have too many when surrounded by such photogenic scenery.
