Solo Art Exploration on Naoshima Island

Day 10: Artistic Reflections: A Final Day of Discovery on Naoshima

Reflecting on the journey through Naoshima's art scene, exploring Teshima's labs, and savoring island flavors on my last day in Japan.

Farewell, Naoshima

As my final day on Naoshima Island unfolded, a sense of peaceful reflection washed over me. The crisp March air, carrying a hint of the sea, accompanied me as I set out to absorb the last artistic impressions of this unique destination. It was a day of gentle exploration, savoring local flavors, and preparing to carry the spirit of Naoshima back home to Toronto.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Akaito Coffee, a charming cafe near the Miyanoura Port. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee mingled with the scent of baking scones, creating a cozy atmosphere. I opted for their signature Aalto coffee, a rich and smooth blend that the owner, a Naoshima native, clearly takes pride in. Chatting with him, I learned a few things about the island that guidebooks often miss. It's these small, authentic interactions that truly enrich a travel experience. It reminded me of the warm hospitality I often experienced back home in the Maldives.

With a caffeine boost and a sense of purpose, I hopped on the ferry to Teshima Island, eager to explore the Teshima 8 Million Lab. This unique art installation, conceived by artist Sputniko!, explores the concept of Yaoyorozu, the myriad of gods believed to reside in everything. The lab seeks to create new members of this pantheon, blending science and art in thought-provoking ways. The structure itself is fascinating, a traditional dwelling transformed into a modern exhibition space, with a torii gate marking the entrance. The blend of old and new, tradition and innovation, perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the art islands.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

After immersing myself in the Teshima 8 Million Lab, I returned to Naoshima, my stomach rumbling with anticipation for lunch. I decided to try Ishii Shouten, a small udon shop in Honmura. The atmosphere was incredibly homely, like stepping into someone's grandmother's kitchen. I ordered their famous beef udon, a steaming bowl of flavorful broth, tender beef, and perfectly chewy noodles. It was simple, comforting, and utterly delicious. As someone who enjoys cooking Maldivian cuisine, I always appreciate experiencing the heart and soul that goes into local dishes.

With the afternoon sun casting long shadows, I considered a visit to the Naoshima Fishing Park. However, the lure of a relaxing end to my artistic journey proved too strong. Instead, I wandered along the coastline, sketchbook in hand, capturing the serene beauty of the Seto Inland Sea. The gentle breeze, the sound of the waves, and the sight of the distant islands created a sense of tranquility that I knew I would cherish long after leaving.

As evening approached, I sought out Yuunagi for a farewell dinner. This restaurant, conveniently located near the port, is known for its fresh seafood and warm hospitality. I opted for their recommended fried flounder, a crispy and flavorful dish that was cooked to perfection. The husband and wife team who run the restaurant were incredibly welcoming, making me feel like a part of their family. It was the perfect way to end my culinary explorations on Naoshima.

Before heading back to My Lodge Naoshima for my final night, I decided to check out Little Plum, a cozy bar near the I♥湯 bathhouse. Housed in a renovated marine container, it had a unique and inviting atmosphere. I enjoyed a Naoshima beer, reflecting on my experiences over the past ten days. The combination of art, nature, and genuine human connection had left an indelible mark on my soul.

Tomorrow, I embark on my journey back to Toronto, carrying with me a treasure trove of memories and inspiration. Naoshima Island, with its unique blend of art and tranquility, has proven to be an unforgettable experience. It's a place that encourages contemplation, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us. I hope to return someday, perhaps with Aisha and Zayn, to share this magical place with my family. For now, I'll hold onto the artistic reflections and the peaceful spirit of Naoshima, cherishing the memories made on this solo art exploration.

Looking ahead, I'm already contemplating how to incorporate the sustainable and culturally immersive aspects of this trip into future family adventures. Perhaps we'll explore similar destinations in South Asia, where we can share our heritage with Zayn while discovering new artistic and cultural treasures together. The possibilities are endless, and I'm excited to see where our travels will take us next. For now, though, it's time to say sayonara to Naoshima and prepare for the journey home. I'm sure Aisha and Zayn are eager to hear all about it.

This trip has definitely inspired me to explore the art scene more in Toronto as well. Perhaps Aisha and I can make that our next date night! I'm already looking forward to seeing Zayn's face when I show him all the photos I took. I might even try to recreate the beef udon I had today, though I doubt it will be as good as Ishii Shouten's! This solo trip was exactly what I needed to recharge my creative batteries, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to have experienced the beauty and tranquility of Naoshima Island.
