Solo Art Exploration on Naoshima Island
Day 9: Art and Serenity: A Day of Discovery on Teshima Island
Explore the serene beauty of Teshima Island, from the inspiring Teshima Art Museum to the tranquil shores of Kasaneiwa, a day of art and nature.
Teshima's Tranquil Embrace
Today, I ventured to Teshima Island, a serene escape from the bustling art scene of Naoshima. It was a day filled with quiet contemplation, artistic immersion, and the simple joys of exploring a new landscape. It's amazing how much these islands can offer, each with its unique flavor and pace.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Kinosaki Udon Naoshima. It's become a bit of a ritual to start my days here with a comforting bowl of udon. The owner is incredibly welcoming, and there's something special about enjoying a simple, authentic meal before diving into a day of art and exploration. The handmade udon was delicious, and the tempura was perfectly crispy. It's a humble spot, but the food speaks for itself, and it's a great way to fuel up for the day.
After breakfast, I hopped on the ferry to Teshima. The boat ride itself was a treat, with the crisp sea air and the stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. I could see Teshima gradually coming into view, its green hills promising a day of tranquility.
My first stop was the Teshima Art Museum. The museum is a collaboration between artist Rei Naito and architect Ryue Nishizawa. It's not just a museum; it's an experience. The architecture is stunning, a concrete shell that seems to emerge from the landscape. Inside, the single artwork, 'Matrix,' is a mesmerizing display of water droplets that move and merge across the floor. The natural light filters in through openings in the ceiling, creating an ethereal atmosphere. It's a place for quiet reflection, a space where art, architecture, and nature blend seamlessly.

The Teshima Art Museum is more than just a museum; it is a sanctuary where art, architecture, and nature converge to create a space of profound serenity and reflection.
The experience at Teshima Art Museum was unlike anything I've encountered. The way the light played with the water droplets, the gentle sounds, and the sheer simplicity of the space created a meditative atmosphere. It was a reminder to slow down, to observe, and to appreciate the beauty in the everyday. I spent a good amount of time there, simply sitting and absorbing the surroundings. It was an incredibly calming and grounding experience, something I deeply appreciated after the more visually intense experiences on Naoshima.
After the museum, I was ready for lunch, and I decided to try Shimacoya. This charming spot is known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious food. I enjoyed a light and flavorful meal there, savoring the local ingredients and the peaceful ambiance. It was a perfect place to relax and recharge before continuing my exploration of the island. Shimacoya also has a shop, and I picked up a small souvenir to remind me of my time on Teshima.

Next on the agenda was Kasaneiwa, a balancing rock formation with a rich history. The walk to Kasaneiwa was beautiful, a winding path through lush greenery. The rock itself is quite impressive, seemingly defying gravity as it perches on the hillside. The views from the top were breathtaking, a panoramic vista of the Seto Inland Sea and the surrounding islands.

Kasaneiwa is more than just a scenic spot; it's a place steeped in local lore. The rock has been a site of spiritual significance for centuries, and it's easy to see why. There's a sense of peace and reverence that permeates the area. As I stood there, taking in the view, I felt a deep connection to the island's history and its natural beauty.
As the day drew to a close, I made my way back to the port, stopping at Raumen Tsumu for dinner. After hearing so much about it, I had to give it a try. It's a small, local restaurant run by an elderly couple, and their ramen is fantastic. The broth was rich and flavorful, and the noodles were perfectly cooked. It was a comforting end to a day of exploration and reflection.

The weather today was typical for March, with highs around 56°F (13°C) and lows around 41°F (5°C). It was moderately chilly and a bit breezy, which made for a refreshing walk around the island. I was glad I'd packed a light jacket, though I did forget my raincoat back at the lodge. It's something I'll definitely remember for tomorrow.
Reflecting on the day, Teshima offered a different kind of art experience than Naoshima. It was less about grand installations and more about subtle interactions with nature and contemplative spaces. The Teshima Art Museum was a highlight, a place that truly embodies the fusion of art and environment. Kasaneiwa, with its historical and spiritual significance, added another layer to the island's appeal.
As I prepare for my final day on these art islands, I'm already looking forward to what tomorrow holds. My itinerary includes visits to the Teshima 8 Million Lab and the Naoshima Fishing Park. I'm also planning to have breakfast at Akaito Coffee, lunch at Ishii Shouten, and dinner at Yuunagi. And perhaps, if time allows, I'll stop by Little Plum for a drink before heading back to the lodge.
Tomorrow marks the end of my solo art exploration on Naoshima Island. It has been an enriching experience, a journey that has deepened my appreciation for art, culture, and the beauty of the natural world. I'm grateful for the opportunity to have spent time in this unique corner of the world, and I know that the memories and insights I've gained will stay with me long after I've left.
I'm also starting to think about my next trip. Perhaps I'll bring Aisha and Zayn along next time. I know they would both love exploring these islands and experiencing the art and culture firsthand. It would be a different kind of trip, of course, but I'm sure it would be just as rewarding.
For now, though, it's time to rest and recharge. Tomorrow is another day of exploration, and I want to be ready to make the most of it. Goodnight from Naoshima Island, or rather, Teshima. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I will also remember to buy a Japanese phrasebook. I think it would help me to connect more with the locals.
It's funny how travel can sometimes feel like a pilgrimage. The long journey to get here, the quiet moments of reflection in the art spaces, the simple meals shared with locals – it all adds up to something more than just a vacation. It's a chance to step outside of my everyday life and connect with something deeper, something more meaningful. And that, I think, is why I keep coming back to these kinds of experiences. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about finding new perspectives, new ways of seeing the world and my place in it. And in that sense, this trip has been a resounding success. I feel refreshed, inspired, and ready to bring a bit of this island serenity back home with me.
