A Day of Discovery in Mendoza

Today was a whirlwind of experiences, perfectly encapsulating what I adore about Mendoza: the seamless blend of adventure, indulgence, and cultural immersion. From the vineyards to the mountains, and finally to the cozy corners of local eateries, every moment felt like a discovery.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Vico Restaurant. It’s always a pleasure to start the day with a good meal, and Vico didn't disappoint. The restaurant had a charming atmosphere, and the menu offered a variety of options. I opted for a classic Argentine breakfast, which gave me the energy I needed for the day's adventures. It reminded me of the simple joys of breakfasts back in Echternach, Luxembourg, with Jürgen and Sophie, before life got too hectic. Simple, fresh, and delicious – the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring Mendoza. Vico's is known for it's wine dispensers, offering a unique, interactive experience, but since it was breakfast, I skipped the wine and opted for a coffee instead.

Next on the agenda was the Mendoza Wine Camp. As someone deeply interested in wine tasting, I was eager to delve into the heart of Argentina's wine country. The camp promised an immersive experience, and it delivered in spades. The tour was informative, accessible, and fun, catering to both casual enthusiasts and seasoned wine professionals. It was fascinating to learn about the history of winemaking in Mendoza and the unique characteristics of the Malbec grape. The tour guides were knowledgeable and passionate, and they made the experience all the more enjoyable. One of the best parts was that it wasn't the same wine tour repeated over and over again, but instead, the guide provided the group with information, while each winery provided details that made them unique.

After a morning of wine appreciation, it was time for something a bit more adventurous. I headed to ANDEMARA - Trekking & Aventura, ready to explore Mendoza's natural beauty. As much as I love the cultural aspects of travel, I also crave the thrill of the outdoors. ANDEMARA offered just that, with a range of activities from scenic hikes to exhilarating rock climbing and mountain biking excursions. I opted for a guided hike through the Andes, and the views were simply breathtaking. The guides at Andemara were fantastic, ensuring that safety was a top priority while also sharing their knowledge of the local flora and fauna. It was invigorating to be surrounded by such stunning landscapes, and I felt a sense of accomplishment as I reached the summit of the trail. It reminded me of hiking with Jürgen in the Brandenburg countryside, though the Andes certainly offer a different kind of beauty than the rolling hills of Germany. ANDEMARA is a must-visit destination for tourists who crave adventure and the great outdoors.

Lunch was at Osadía de Crear, a restaurant that embodies the spirit of culinary innovation. The name itself, meaning Audacity to Create, suggests a dining experience that goes beyond the ordinary. I was intrigued by the restaurant's focus on pairing wines with the menu, and I was eager to see what they had in store. The restaurant is part of the Susana Balbo wines, and is run by Susana's daughter, Ana. The dishes were prepared with seasonal ingredients, and the flavors were both familiar and surprising. The restaurant has a seven-course tasting menu that is overseen by Michelin-recommended chef, Flavia Amad. Each dish was paired with a different wine, enhancing the flavors and creating a harmonious culinary experience. It was a true celebration of Mendocinian produce, with each dish drawing inspiration from the natural elements. The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, making it the perfect place to unwind and savor the moment. I couldn't help but think of Sophie, who would have loved the artistic presentation of each dish. I made a mental note to bring her here someday, to share in this culinary adventure.

As the sun began to set, I found myself at Azafran Restaurant for dinner. Known as one of the best restaurants in Mendoza, Azafran offers an international top-class experience. The restaurant started as a delicacy shop in the nineteen-nineties, but the owning Fraga family turned the shop into a restaurant and gourmet store only with the best local produce instead. The empanadas are a good example of how something classical can be made with a new and interesting twist without ever losing the roots to the original. Head Chef Pablo Ranea gives the same inventive treatment to all the classics and his cuisine will not stop surprising you even if it is familiar at the same time. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with a touch of sophistication. The sommelier, Fernando Szczurowski, invited me to the restaurant's impressive wine room just next door and he encouraged me to choose my own wines. Of course he also assisted me and I had some serious difficulties in choosing from the many fantastic local wines. The menu featured a variety of Argentine dishes with a modern twist, and each dish was a work of art. The flavors were bold and complex, and the presentation was impeccable. It was a truly memorable dining experience, and I savored every bite. Azafran is not the typical Argentinean restaurant with steak and empanadas. You will have delicious steak and empanadas just as you will have at so many other restaurants in the country, but at Azafrán all will be served to you with a twist.

To cap off the night, I decided to experience Mendoza's nightlife at Antares Mendoza, a local bar known for its craft beers and lively atmosphere. I appreciated the chance to unwind and soak in the local culture. The bar was bustling with activity, and I struck up conversations with fellow travelers and locals alike. I sampled a few of the local brews, each with its own unique flavor profile. It was a fun and relaxed way to end the day, and I felt a sense of connection with the community. It reminded me of the cozy pubs in Berlin, where Jürgen and I often spend our evenings, sharing stories and laughter with friends. Antares is an artisanal beer company started by three friends from Mar de Plata, Argentina, in the 90s. Named after the most brilliant star in the Scorpio constellation, Antares was used as a guide by seamen for centuries. The bar offers a variety of beers, including German Kolsch, Scotch Ale, English Porter, Babylonian Honey Beer, Irish Cream Stout, Barley Wine and Antares' Imperial Stout on the menu.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel: the opportunity to explore new places, taste new flavors, and connect with new people. Mendoza has captured my heart, and I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings. Tomorrow, I am scheduled to visit Mendoza Holidays Wine Tours and SAK Wine & Travel - Adventure and Wine tours in Mendoza. I'm looking forward to more wine, adventure, and unforgettable experiences. Before that, I'll be sure to stop by Fuente y Fonda for breakfast.

As I reflect on my adventures today, I'm reminded of something Jürgen once told me:

The best journeys are those that lead us back to ourselves.

And indeed, this journey to Mendoza has been a journey of self-discovery, a chance to reconnect with my passions and appreciate the beauty of the world around me. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for the experiences I've had and the memories I've made. Goodnight from Mendoza!
