A Taste of Mendoza

My Argentinian adventure has officially begun! After a long journey from Berlin, I finally arrived in Mendoza, eager to explore this renowned wine region. Today was all about immersing myself in the city's rich history and vibrant culture, setting the stage for the wine-filled days to come. I couldn't wait to discover what treasures Mendoza held, and I was not disappointed.

The crisp morning air, typical of Mendoza in May, greeted me as I set out to explore. The average temperature in May is around 12°C (53.6°F), which made it perfect for walking around and soaking in the atmosphere. My first stop was the Museo del Pasado Cuyano, a place that promised to transport me back in time. I decided to leave my forgotten sunscreen at the hotel, hoping the weather would remain mild throughout the day.

Stepping Back in Time

The Museo del Pasado Cuyano, housed in a beautiful historic building that once belonged to former Mendoza governor Francisco Civit, was an absolute delight. Declared a National Historical Monument, the museum offered a fascinating glimpse into the regional history of Mendoza, San Juan, and La Rioja. As I wandered through the sixteen rooms and four courtyards, I felt as though I was walking through the 19th century. The period furniture, paintings, documents, and everyday objects brought the history of the Cuyo region to life. I was particularly captivated by the replica of General San Martín's saber, a powerful symbol of Argentina's fight for independence. The museum also houses a library with over 5,000 volumes and a valuable collection of documents related to Mendoza's history and prominent figures. It was a truly immersive experience, and I left with a deeper appreciation for the region's heritage.

A Plaza of Wine

Next on my list was the Plaza del Vino, a central gathering place that celebrates Mendoza's most famous product. Although there wasn't a specific event happening at the plaza today, its significance as a tribute to the wine industry was palpable. I took a leisurely stroll around the plaza, admiring the monuments and sculptures that pay homage to the viticultural traditions of the region. It was a perfect spot to pause and reflect on the importance of wine in Mendoza's culture and economy.

A Culinary Journey Begins

For breakfast, I ventured to Magnolia Restó, drawn in by its reputation for innovative cuisine and warm ambiance. The restaurant did not disappoint. The open, bright interior was aesthetically pleasing, and the service was impeccable. I savored a delightful breakfast, appreciating the fresh, seasonal ingredients and the creative culinary offerings. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

Lunch was at Azafran Restaurant, a place I had read so much about. Azafran started as a deli and evolved into a top-class restaurant. It offers a true international experience with a local twist. The sommelier, Fernando Szczurowski, invited me to the impressive wine room, and I had some serious difficulties choosing from the many fantastic local wines.

The meal was superb. I opted for the three-course lunch menu, and each dish was a masterpiece of flavor and presentation. The restaurant itself has a charming atmosphere, with jars of house-made pickles, jams, and sauces lining one area, a nod to its deli history. It was undoubtedly the best meal I've had so far in Argentina.

Exploring Local Flavors

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore Vinoteca Peatonal Wines. Located in the bustling center of Mendoza, it is a haven for wine lovers. The store had a diverse collection of local and international wines. The staff was knowledgeable, providing recommendations and insights about each wine. The ambiance was warm and inviting, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing. I picked up a couple of bottles of Malbec to take back to the hotel, a perfect souvenir of my first day in Mendoza.

A Perfect Ending

As evening approached, I made my way to Anna Bistró for dinner. This charming French establishment offered fine dining at reasonable prices. The restaurant’s relaxed ambiance and delicate touches of French decor made it an ideal spot for a cozy dinner. The menu boasted a wide selection of dishes. I chose the empanadas filled with entraña (skirt steak) and a delectable flank steak cooked to perfection. For dessert, I indulged in the heavenly French pastries, expertly paired with a glass of Malbec from their impressive wine list.

Anna Bistró was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery. As I walked back to the Huentala Hotel, I reflected on the day's experiences. Mendoza had already captured my heart with its rich history, vibrant culture, and exquisite cuisine. I was excited for what tomorrow would bring, with plans to visit the Parque Cívico and the iconic Cartel de Mendoza. Perhaps I'll even stop by Uvas Bar for a nightcap. But for now, I was content to savor the memories of my first day in this enchanting city.

Now, as I prepare for my second day in Mendoza, I can't help but feel a sense of excitement for what lies ahead. I'm particularly looking forward to exploring the Parque Cívico and capturing a photo with the iconic #amoMendoza sign. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of discovery.

I'm off to bed now, dreaming of vineyards and Malbec. Stay tuned for more tales from Mendoza!
