Day 7: A Fond Farewell to Florence: Reflecting on a Week of Renaissance Wonders
Saying goodbye to Florence after a week of art, history, and delicious food. Reflecting on the Renaissance and planning for home.
Ciao, Firenze! A Final Day of Florentine Charm
As my Florentine adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences of the past week. Florence has truly captured my heart, and today was all about soaking in the last drops of its magic before heading back to Berlin. Although I'm eager to see Jürgen and Sophie again, a part of me wishes I could linger a little longer in this enchanting city.
My final day began, as many others did, with a delightful breakfast at Caffè Gilli. The historic café, with its elegant ambiance, was the perfect spot to enjoy a cappuccino and a pastry while watching the city awaken. The pastries were amazing and there was a nice amount of rum in the cake. Sipping my coffee, I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore such a culturally rich destination.
Piazza Santo Spirito: A Morning of Local Life
After breakfast, I decided to venture into the Oltrarno neighborhood, eager to experience a different side of Florence. My destination was Piazza Santo Spirito, a lively square known for its local vibe and artisan shops. As I wandered through the piazza, I was immediately drawn to its authentic charm. The Basilica di Santo Spirito stood proudly on one side of the square. I learned that the square has a rich history, dating back to the Middle Ages when it was a gathering place for prayers, demonstrations, games, and festivals.

I took some time to admire the Fountain of Neptune. The fountain served to unite the square broken up into two separate areas. I learned that the fountain was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1559 to celebrate the marriage of Francesco de' Medici I to Grand Duchess Joanna of Austria. It was fascinating to learn about the history behind this iconic landmark.

Basilica di Santo Spirito: A Renaissance Masterpiece
Next on my list was the Basilica di Santo Spirito itself. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, this church is a prime example of Renaissance architecture. The interior is stunning, with its harmonious proportions and serene atmosphere. As I wandered through the basilica, I was struck by the sense of peace and tranquility it exuded. I made sure to admire Michelangelo's wooden crucifix, a true masterpiece of early Renaissance sculpture. The Basilica di Santo Spirito is one of the largest churches of Florence and the burial place of all the principal members of the Medici family.

Boutique Nadine: A Treasure Trove of Vintage Finds
With a few hours left before needing to head back to the hotel to collect my luggage, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. I had heard about Boutique Nadine, a charming shop known for its curated selection of vintage clothing and accessories. As a lover of unique and timeless pieces, I couldn't resist the temptation to explore its offerings.

The boutique was a treasure trove of vintage finds, with racks of carefully selected garments and displays of sparkling jewelry. I spent a happy hour browsing through the collection, admiring the craftsmanship and history behind each item. I ended up purchasing a beautiful silk scarf with a vintage print, a perfect memento of my time in Florence. I learned that the shop has two locations just a few blocks from each other in the heart of Florence, and they are both part vintage-clothing store, part indie-designer boutique.
A Final Florentine Feast: Dinner at Il Latini
For my final dinner in Florence, I wanted to experience a truly authentic Florentine meal. After doing some research, I decided on Il Latini, a family-run restaurant known for its traditional dishes and lively atmosphere. From the start the service was excellent. The menu has something for all tastes. This is a well-known family restaurants. It was happy and noisy. I was happy to sit back and enjoy the ride “famiglia” style which means everything gets chucked in the middle for sharing. For 45 euros a head you get to drink as much wine as you want, have a starter of ham, salad and liver pate, followed by a mountain of meat, then pudding, sweet wine, some sort of sherry and biscottes and then limoncella.

The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, creating a vibrant and convivial atmosphere. I ordered the Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a signature Florentine steak, cooked rare and served with herby roast potatoes and white beans drizzled with the pungent house olive oil. The steak was cooked to perfection, juicy and flavorful. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey through Florence.
Cantinetta delle Terme: A Memorable Lunch
Before my delightful dinner at Il Latini, I enjoyed a memorable lunch at Cantinetta delle Terme. The restaurant has people waiting outside patiently for a table speaks volumes of the quality of the restaurant. From the start the service was excellent. Lovely approach to their guests. The food was presented very well and full flavored. There was no rush between courses but at the same time we were not waiting, the balance was just right. I was recommended pasta with raw shrimp and truffle. After several days in Rome, Venice, and Florence (where I eat a lot of pasta), I have to say it's without a doubt the best pasta I've ever eaten. For flavor, texture, innovation, and presentation, it deserves a 10.

Departure Thoughts
As I sit here in my hotel room, packing my suitcase and preparing for my early morning departure, I can't help but feel a sense of sadness. Florence has been an incredible experience, and I'm already longing to return. The city's art, history, and culture have captivated me, and I know that the memories I've made here will stay with me for a lifetime.

The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.
Until next time, arrivederci!

P.S. I am looking forward to getting back to Berlin and seeing Jürgen and Sophie. I have missed them so much during this trip. I am already planning our next family vacation, perhaps to the Brandenburg countryside for some hiking and relaxation.
