Exploring the Ancient Wonders of Herculaneum with Fatoumata
Day 2: Ascending Vesuvius: A Day Among Giants
Join Moussa and Fatoumata as they hike Mount Vesuvius and explore Vesuvius National Park, savoring Italian cuisine and breathtaking views.
A Day Above the Clouds
Today, Fatoumata and I embarked on an adventure that took us high above the Bay of Naples, to the summit of Mount Vesuvius. It was a day filled with breathtaking views, a touch of history, and the simple joy of exploring nature together. As a software developer from Montreal, used to the city's hustle, stepping onto the volcanic soil felt like entering another world.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Terrazza Quattroventi. The reviews I had read online spoke of stunning views and great service, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. We enjoyed a delightful meal while overlooking the bay, a perfect start to our day. The friendly staff and the quality of the food made it a memorable experience.

After breakfast, we set off towards Vesuvius National Park. The drive itself was scenic, with glimpses of the Italian countryside. As we approached the mountain, its imposing presence grew larger, a stark reminder of the power of nature. I was a bit concerned about the weather, as December can be unpredictable on Vesuvius. I had packed a light jacket, remembering the essentials, but I silently cursed myself for forgetting the umbrella; Montreal habits die hard, I guess.

Reaching the parking area, we opted for the shuttle to the ticket office, a decision I was grateful for as it saved our energy for the climb ahead. The air was crisp, and a cool breeze hinted at the winter chill. The park itself is the smallest in Italy, but it is still among the most famous in the world. As we started our ascent, the views began to unfold, revealing the stunning landscapes of the region. I paused, took a deep breath, and captured the moment with my camera, hoping to do justice to the beauty around us.
The trail to the crater was well-maintained, but the incline was a good workout. Fatoumata and I took our time, enjoying the scenery and each other's company. Along the way, we met fellow travelers from different corners of the world, all drawn by the allure of this iconic volcano. Sharing smiles and brief conversations, we felt a sense of camaraderie, united by our shared adventure.
Reaching the summit was an exhilarating experience. The crater was a sight to behold, a vast expanse of volcanic rock and steam vents. The panoramic views were simply breathtaking, stretching from the Bay of Naples to the distant mountains. I tried to imagine what it must have been like in AD 79, during the infamous eruption that buried Pompeii and Herculaneum. It was a humbling reminder of the forces that shape our world.
To walk on Vesuvius is to walk on the edge of history, feeling the echoes of the past and the pulse of the present.
After soaking in the views and the atmosphere, we began our descent. The way down was easier, and we made good time. By now, we were both quite hungry, and the thought of lunch spurred us on. We decided to try La Briciola in Ercolano. It was a cozy little spot, and we enjoyed a simple but satisfying meal of local specialties.

With our appetites sated, we decided to do a little shopping. We stopped by Pezzamificio Herculanum Di Liberato Langella & C. (S.A.S.), a local shop I had spotted earlier. I was hoping to find a unique souvenir, and Fatoumata, with her keen eye for quality, helped me pick out a beautiful scarf made from local wool. It was a perfect reminder of our day on Vesuvius.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Cratere for dinner. The restaurant’s name itself, meaning crater, seemed fitting after our day's adventure. We enjoyed a delicious Italian meal, savoring the flavors of the region. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere and offered beautiful views. It was the perfect way to end our day.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a remarkable place with my amazing wife. Vesuvius is more than just a mountain; it is a symbol of resilience, beauty, and the enduring power of nature.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Pompeii. I am eager to walk through the ancient streets and learn more about the lives of the people who once called this city home. We'll be visiting Scavi di Pompei, the House of the Vettii, and Villa dei Misteri. I'm sure it will be another day filled with history and wonder. We'll start with breakfast at Pizzeria Luna Caprese, have lunch at ristorante pizzeria degli scavi da Ernesto, and end the day with dinner at Dante Osteria. I'm also hoping to check out the Roof Garden Lounge Bar for a relaxing evening.
As I sit here writing, I realize that this trip is not just about seeing new places; it is about creating memories, strengthening bonds, and appreciating the beauty of our world. And I am grateful for every moment.
The trails to Vesuvius are varied, with the Gran Cono trail being the official route to the crater. The Tirone Reserve offers a tranquil path through a pine forest. For those seeking more challenging hikes, the Valley of Hell path offers a 7-hour round trip. The Terzigno Pinewood trail is designed for those with mobility issues. Each path offers a unique perspective on the park's diverse landscapes.
Visiting Vesuvius in December has its challenges, with colder temperatures and occasional snowfall. However, the quieter ambiance and the stunning views after rainfall or snowfall make it a unique experience. It's essential to check the weather forecast and be prepared for changing conditions.
Restaurants like Terrazza Quattroventi offer not only great food but also stunning views of the Bay of Naples. La Briciola provides a cozy and welcoming atmosphere with delicious local specialties. Cratere offers a unique dining experience with a menu that highlights regional cuisine. Each restaurant adds to the overall experience of visiting Vesuvius.
The Pezzamificio Herculanum Di Liberato Langella & C. (S.A.S.) offers a chance to find unique, locally made souvenirs. Supporting local businesses adds a personal touch to the travel experience.
Exploring Vesuvius and its surroundings offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and culinary delights. It's a journey that touches the senses and enriches the soul. I encourage everyone to add this destination to their travel list.
As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with anticipation and excitement. Italy has a way of captivating the heart, and I am eager to discover more of its hidden treasures. Until tomorrow, arrivederci!
