Echoes of Royalty in Ercolano

Today was a delightful immersion into the opulent world of Italian royalty and a charming step back in time. Fatoumata and I explored magnificent villas, savored local flavors, and stumbled upon vintage treasures, creating memories that resonate with the grandeur of the past and the simple joys of the present. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the blend of history, culture, and personal discovery is simply intoxicating.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at I Giardini di Cesare, a local favorite known for its traditional Italian fare. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, with excellent service. I enjoyed a strong coffee and a delicious pastry, while Fatoumata opted for a selection of fresh fruit. Fuelled for the day, we set off to explore the royal heritage of Ercolano.

Our first stop was the Reggia di Portici. The palace, built in 1738 by Charles of Bourbon, stands as a testament to the splendor of the Bourbon dynasty. As we walked through the grand halls and manicured gardens, I couldn't help but imagine the lavish events and historical figures that once graced these spaces. The architecture was breathtaking, a perfect example of Neapolitan Baroque style. The palace also houses the MUSA (Musei delle Scienze Agrarie), which was fascinating.

Wandering through the palace, Fatoumata paused, gazing out of a window overlooking the gardens. She turned to me, a soft smile gracing her lips, and said, Imagine the stories these walls could tell, Moussa. The echoes of laughter, the secrets whispered in hallways… it's like stepping into a living history book. It was one of those moments where I felt an even deeper connection with her, sharing a sense of wonder and appreciation for the past.

We then explored the Orto Botanico, a beautiful botanical garden within the Reggia's grounds. Despite it being December, there was still plenty of greenery to admire, and we enjoyed a peaceful stroll surrounded by nature. I tried to picture what the gardens would look like in full bloom, a riot of colors and scents. I made a mental note to perhaps return in the spring one day. The gardens offered a tranquil escape from the city, a place where one could reflect on the beauty of nature and the passage of time.

Traveling allows you to witness history not just in books, but in the very stones beneath your feet.

After immersing ourselves in royal history, it was time for lunch. We headed to Terrazza Due Golfi, a restaurant known for its stunning views and local cuisine. The restaurant was located at Contrada Osservatorio, 7, 80056 Ercolano NA. The view truly lived up to its reputation, offering a panoramic vista of the Gulf of Naples. I savored a plate of fresh seafood, while Fatoumata enjoyed a traditional Neapolitan pizza. The food was delicious, and the view made the experience even more memorable.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. We stumbled upon Erco Rètro Vintage Store, a charming vintage shop in Ercolano. As someone who appreciates unique finds and sustainable fashion, I was immediately drawn to the store. The shop was filled with clothing, accessories, and furniture from decades past. I found a beautiful vintage leather jacket that fit me perfectly, and Fatoumata discovered a stunning silk scarf. We left the store with our treasures, feeling like we had unearthed a piece of history.

Our final stop of the day was Villa Campolieto. This eighteenth-century villa is considered one of the most beautiful of the Vesuvian Villas. Built by Luigi Vanvitelli, the villa offered breathtaking views of the sea. The villa has a square plan, with four blocks organized around a central Greek cross gallery. The rear side opens towards the Gulf of Naples with an elliptical arcade with Tuscan columns. We wandered through the villa's elegant rooms and admired the architecture. The villa was built by Prince Luzio De Sangro, Duke of Casacalenda. Gioffredo was replaced by Luigi Vanvitelli who directed the works from 1763 to 1773, then completed by his son Carlo, in 1775.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Bistrot De Paris Ercolano. The restaurant is located in Via Vittorio Veneto 10/12, Ercolano. I enjoyed a glass of local wine, while Fatoumata savored a delicious dessert. The perfect end to a perfect day.

Reflecting on the day, I am struck by how much history and beauty is packed into this small corner of Italy. From the grandeur of the Reggia di Portici and Villa Campolieto to the charm of Erco Rètro Vintage Store and the flavors of Terrazza Due Golfi, Ercolano offers a sensory feast that I will not soon forget. I'm also grateful for the reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with the past, appreciating the present, and sharing those experiences with loved ones.

Tomorrow, we're off to Naples! We plan to visit the Certosa e Museo di San Martino, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, and the Sansevero Chapel Museum. In the evening, we'll grab a drink at The Shire Pub. I'm excited to see what adventures await us in the vibrant city of Naples. I am also excited about the chance to explore more of the region's rich history and culture. I'm sure Fatoumata will enjoy it too. I'll be sure to share all the details with you soon!

I am also still thinking about the umbrella and extra memory card for my camera that I forgot to pack. I will make sure to buy them tomorrow in Naples.

Until tomorrow!
