Day 10: Unearthing Ancient Secrets and Natural Wonders in Chapada Diamantina
Discover the wonders of Pedra do Diamante and the ancient art of Serra das Paridas. A day of exploration and cultural immersion.
Whispers of the Past, Visions of the Present
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took us from the sparkling heights of a natural diamond to the silent depths of ancient rock art. Chapada Diamantina National Park continues to surprise and enchant, offering new perspectives with every turn. The family was eager to explore, and I was excited to capture these moments through my lens, preserving the memories of our Brazilian adventure.
Our day began with a simple yet satisfying breakfast amidst the stunning backdrop of Chapada Diamantina National Park. There’s something truly special about starting the day surrounded by such natural beauty, a feeling of peace that sets the tone for the adventures ahead. After breakfast, we set off to explore Pedra do Diamante.
The drive to Pedra do Diamante was an experience in itself. The landscape unfolded before us, revealing the raw beauty of the Chapada. Upon arrival, the vista was nothing short of breathtaking. The kids were immediately captivated, scrambling over the rocks to get a better view. Fatoumata and I watched them, smiles on our faces, as they marveled at the seemingly endless expanse of the park. I took the opportunity to capture some photos, trying to frame the perfect shot that would do justice to the landscape's grandeur. The fresh air, the warm sun, and the sheer scale of the scenery made me feel incredibly alive and connected to nature. It was a moment of pure joy, a reminder of why we embarked on this journey in the first place.

Ibrahim, ever the curious one, peppered me with questions about how the rock got its shape and why it was called Pedra do Diamante. I explained, as best I could, that the name came from the diamond mining history of the region. Though no actual diamonds were found on the rock itself, the area was once a hub for diamond prospectors, and the name stuck. Aminata, always the observer, quietly took in the scene, occasionally pointing out interesting rock formations or distant birds. Fatoumata, with her keen eye for detail, spotted various species of local flora, adding another layer of appreciation to our experience.
To truly understand a place, one must listen to the echoes of its past and embrace the beauty of its present.
After spending a good part of the morning at Pedra do Diamante, soaking in the views and capturing memories, we packed up and headed towards our next destination: Serra das Paridas.
The drive to Serra das Paridas took us through winding roads and past small, rural communities. The anticipation grew as we approached the archaeological site. Serra das Paridas, I had learned, is home to an impressive collection of ancient rock paintings, some dating back thousands of years. It was discovered in 2005 after a forest fire. As we arrived, I felt a sense of reverence, knowing that we were about to step back in time and connect with the people who once inhabited this land.

We met our guide, who was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and significance of the site. He explained that Serra das Paridas is one of the most important archaeological sites in the Chapada Diamantina, with over 1,000 paintings spread across several rock shelters. The paintings depict a variety of subjects, including animals, people, and geometric shapes. The colors, derived from mineral pigments like manganese and iron oxide, have remarkably withstood the test of time.
As we walked through the site, the guide pointed out various paintings, explaining their possible meanings and significance. The kids were fascinated, their imaginations running wild as they tried to decipher the stories behind the ancient art. I was particularly struck by the intricate details and the sheer skill of the artists who created these works so long ago. It was humbling to think about the lives they lived and the messages they left behind.
One particular set of paintings stood out: figures of women in birthing positions, which is said to be how the site got its name. It was a powerful image, representing the cycle of life and the connection between humanity and nature. I felt a sense of awe, contemplating the enduring power of these images and their ability to transcend time.
After our enriching visit to Serra das Paridas, we were all quite hungry. We drove to Restaurante Sabor da Serra for lunch, and I must say, the food was as delightful as the views we had enjoyed all day. The restaurant offered a variety of local dishes, and we decided to try a bit of everything. The kids, surprisingly, were quite adventurous, sampling new flavors and textures with gusto. Fatoumata and I enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, savoring the delicious food and reflecting on the day's adventures.

As the sun began to set, we decided to unwind at Roots Bar [I couldn't find specific information about Roots Bar, so I'm writing a general description of what a bar experience might be like in the area]. The place had a laid-back vibe, with locals and tourists mingling and enjoying the evening air. I ordered a local beer, while Fatoumata opted for a refreshing fruit juice. The kids enjoyed some snacks and played a game of cards, their laughter filling the air. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Corridas de Montanha - Chapada Diamantina and Lapa Doce Cave. I'm particularly excited about exploring the cave, as I've heard it's an incredible natural wonder. We also plan to visit CHAPADA STORE to pick up some souvenirs for friends and family back home. It’s hard to believe we are already on Day 11 of our trip; time really does fly when you’re having fun. As I sit here writing, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we’ve had so far and excited for what tomorrow will bring. Chapada Diamantina continues to captivate us with its beauty and its secrets, and I’m eager to uncover more of its wonders with my family by my side.
Back at our accommodation, the kids were soon fast asleep, dreaming of diamonds and ancient paintings. Fatoumata and I sat on the porch, enjoying the cool night air and the sounds of the forest. We talked about our favorite moments of the day, sharing stories and laughter. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a reminder of the bonds that connect us and the joy of exploring the world together. As I reflect on our journey so far, I realize that it's not just about seeing new places, but about creating lasting memories with the people I love most. And in that sense, our trip to Chapada Diamantina has already been a resounding success.
