Romantic Getaway to the Luberon Region
Day 5: A Day of History, Lavender, and Local Delights in the Luberon
Explore the historic Fort de Buoux, fragrant Abbaye de Sénanque, and charming shops of Luberon. A day of Provençal beauty and culture.
Echoes of the Past and Scents of Provence
Today was a day of contrasts, blending the rugged history of the Luberon with its fragrant natural beauty. Fatoumata and I set out early, eager to explore ancient fortresses and lavender fields, and to immerse ourselves in the local culture. It's days like these that remind me why we chose to explore this region, trading the familiar comforts of Montreal for the sensory richness of Provence.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Inn Le Roy Soleil - Luberon. I must admit, the reviews were a mixed bag, but we decided to give it a try, hoping for the best. The setting was indeed quite lovely, with a beautiful view overlooking the Luberon landscape. The breakfast itself was simple but satisfying, fueling us up for the day's adventures. However, I couldn't help but notice that the hotel seemed a bit worn around the edges, perhaps in need of some updating. Still, the friendly staff and the charming atmosphere made it a pleasant start to our day. It reminded me a bit of some of the older establishments back in Mali, full of character but showing their age.

Our first stop was the Fort de Buoux, a place steeped in history. The drive there was stunning, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the Luberon. As we approached the fort, its imposing presence atop a rocky spur was immediately striking. It's amazing to think that this site has been inhabited since prehistoric times, serving as a strategic defense point for centuries. The climb up to the fort was a bit challenging, especially under the warm Provençal sun, but the effort was well worth it. As I huffed and puffed, Fatoumata, ever the picture of grace, reminded me that this was good exercise, a far cry from my usual coding sessions in Montreal.
Explore the historic Fort de Buoux in Luberon: a medieval citadel with stunning views, ancient ruins, and a secret staircase, offering a unique Provençal adventure.
Exploring the ruins of Fort de Buoux felt like stepping back in time. We wandered through the ancient ramparts, imagining the lives of those who once defended this stronghold. The views from the top were simply breathtaking, stretching across the Luberon valley. I could almost hear the echoes of battles fought and lives lived within these stone walls. The fort has served various purposes over the centuries. It even sheltered Vaudois Protestants persecuted for their beliefs back in the 17th century. Standing there, I felt a profound connection to the past, a reminder of the resilience and struggles of those who came before us.
The beauty of Provence lies not only in its landscapes but also in the stories etched into its ancient stones.
After immersing ourselves in history, we drove to the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, perhaps the most iconic image of Provence. As we approached, the sight of the lavender fields in full bloom was simply breathtaking. The vibrant purple hues against the backdrop of the ancient abbey created a scene of unparalleled beauty. It was exactly as I had imagined, a picture-postcard moment that I knew Fatoumata would adore. The air was thick with the sweet fragrance of lavender, a scent that instantly transported me to a state of tranquility.

Although it was forbidden to walk directly into the lavender fields to protect the monks' work, we admired the view from the designated areas. The abbey itself was a sight to behold, a testament to the enduring power of faith and architecture. We learned about the Cistercian monks who still inhabit the abbey, living a life of prayer and contemplation. The serenity of the place was palpable, a stark contrast to the bustling tourist crowds.
Next on our list was a bit of retail therapy at L'Ornate in Ménerbes. Fatoumata had been wanting to find some unique home décor items, and this shop came highly recommended. L'Ornate turned out to be a delightful boutique filled with exquisite French décor and artisan crafts. Gwënaëlle, the owner, has a passion for craftsmanship using natural materials like wood, linen, and ceramics. Fatoumata was immediately drawn to the colorful table settings and delicate jewelry. We ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl and a set of linen napkins, perfect reminders of our time in Luberon. The shop itself was a testament to the artistry and creativity of the region, a place where tradition and modernity blend seamlessly.

For lunch, we decided to try La Bastide du Grand Tilleul in Mérindol. This restaurant, with its charming Provençal setting and garden terrace, seemed like the perfect spot for a relaxed midday meal. We were not disappointed. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was excellent. Fatoumata ordered the grilled sea bream with vegetables preserved in olive oil, while I opted for the traditional tartare de boeuf au couteau. Both dishes were delicious, showcasing the fresh, local ingredients of the region. As we savored our meal, we enjoyed the peaceful ambiance of the garden, surrounded by the shade of the lime trees. It was a truly delightful experience, a moment of pure Provençal bliss.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to L'ESCANDIHADO in Ménerbes for dinner. This restaurant, known for its pizzas and salads, seemed like a casual and welcoming option. We were in the mood for something simple and delicious, and L'ESCANDIHADO did not disappoint. The pizzas were prepared with fresh ingredients and a crispy crust, and the salads were generous and flavorful. The staff was friendly and attentive, making us feel right at home. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much we had experienced in such a short time. From the historical depths of Fort de Buoux to the fragrant lavender fields of Sénanque Abbey, from the artisan crafts of L'Ornate to the culinary delights of La Bastide du Grand Tilleul and L'ESCANDIHADO, we had truly immersed ourselves in the beauty and culture of the Luberon. It's moments like these that make our journey so rewarding, reminding us of the importance of exploration and connection.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Les Gorges de Véroncle and the Jardin Botanique de la Citadelle. I am looking forward to more discoveries and adventures in this beautiful corner of France. And perhaps, a relaxing cocktail at Le Restaurant & Bar à cocktails de la Ferme de la Huppe to cap off the day. For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration.
As I prepared for bed, I realized I had forgotten my sunhat and portable phone charger at our previous location. A minor setback, but a good reminder to double-check our packing list each day. After all, even the most carefully planned adventures can have their little hiccups. But as they say,
A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles.
And tonight, I am grateful for the companionship of my dear Fatoumata, who makes every adventure a memorable one.
