A Day of Earthy Wonders

Today, Fatoumata and I embarked on a journey that took us both above and below ground, exploring the rich history and captivating landscapes of the Luberon. It was a day filled with vibrant colors, intriguing stories, and the simple pleasures of Provençal life. From the depths of ochre mines to the charming streets of Apt, every moment was a new discovery.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Le Carillon in Apt. I opted for a classic French breakfast – a *tartine* with butter and jam, accompanied by a *café au lait*. Fatoumata chose a *pain au chocolat*, its flaky layers and rich chocolate providing the perfect start to her day. The café buzzed with locals, their animated conversations creating a lively atmosphere. It reminded me of the bustling markets back home in Goundam, Mali, where the energy of the community is as vibrant as the colorful fabrics on display. We lingered over our coffee, savoring the moment and planning our day's adventures.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off for the Mines de Bruoux, located in Gargas. The drive itself was a treat, the winding roads offering stunning views of the Luberon's rolling hills and vineyards. As we approached the mines, the landscape transformed, the lush greenery giving way to ochre cliffs that seemed to glow in the morning sun. The contrast was striking, a testament to the region's unique geological history.

Arriving at the Mines de Bruoux, we were immediately struck by the sheer scale of the site. The towering cliffs, sculpted by decades of mining activity, were a sight to behold. We joined a guided tour, eager to learn about the history and significance of these ochre mines. Donning our hard hats, we ventured into the cool depths of the underground galleries. The temperature difference was immediately noticeable, a welcome respite from the summer heat.

The tour guide, a passionate local, shared fascinating stories about the miners who had toiled here, extracting ochre from the earth. He explained the techniques they used, the challenges they faced, and the importance of ochre to the region's economy. As we walked through the narrow tunnels, some reaching up to 15 meters high, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity and perseverance of these workers. The walls of the mines were a kaleidoscope of colors, ranging from pale yellow to deep red, each hue a testament to the unique mineral composition of the earth.

To truly appreciate a place, you must delve into its history and understand the stories of the people who shaped it.
It was incredible to learn that the ochre from these mines was once used in a variety of applications, from thickening rubber to creating pigments for paints and coatings. The industry thrived in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with the Luberon becoming a major center of ochre production. Today, the Mines de Bruoux stand as a testament to this industrial heritage, a reminder of the region's rich and colorful past. Fatoumata was particularly intrigued by the stories of the miners' families and the impact of the industry on their lives. As an early childhood educator, she has a keen interest in how communities support and nurture their children, and the ochre mining history provided a fascinating insight into the social fabric of the Luberon.

Emerging from the mines, blinking in the sunlight, we felt a profound sense of respect for the men and women who had worked these tunnels. We took a moment to explore the esplanade outside the mines, admiring the views and reflecting on the experience. The Mines de Bruoux are not just a geological wonder; they are a powerful reminder of the human spirit and the enduring connection between people and the land.

Next on our itinerary was La fontaine du canard in Apt. After the underground adventure, we drove back to Apt, eager to explore its charming streets and discover its local treasures. Apt is the largest town in the Luberon, and it has a lively atmosphere, with a mix of shops, restaurants, and historical sites. We parked near the center of town and strolled along the Cours Pierre Puget, the main thoroughfare, soaking in the sights and sounds of Provençal life.

We soon arrived at the Place Carnot, where La fontaine du canard is located. The fountain, built in 1853, features a bronze centerpiece with a jet of water and two superimposed basins. At the base, four swans spout water into an octagonal basin, creating a delightful display. It's a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the town. I couldn't help but think of the fountains back in Mali, where water is such a precious resource. Here in Apt, the fountain is a symbol of abundance and artistry, a reflection of the town's rich cultural heritage.

Fatoumata and I took some photos of the fountain, capturing its elegance and charm. We then explored the surrounding streets, admiring the architecture and browsing the shops. Apt has a rich history, dating back to Roman times, and its buildings reflect this heritage, with a mix of medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. We visited the Apt Cathedral, a magnificent structure with a fascinating history. The cathedral has been rebuilt several times over the centuries, and its current form reflects a mix of architectural styles. Inside, we admired the stained glass windows and the intricate carvings, marveling at the craftsmanship and artistry.

After our exploration of Apt, it was time for lunch. We decided to try L'Echauguette, a restaurant known for its authentic Provençal cuisine. We were lucky to get a table on the terrace, which offered stunning views of the surrounding hills. I ordered the *daube provençale*, a hearty beef stew cooked with red wine, vegetables, and herbs. Fatoumata chose the *salade niçoise*, a classic Provençal salad with tomatoes, olives, anchovies, and eggs. The food was delicious, the flavors fresh and vibrant. It was the perfect way to refuel after our busy morning.

As we savored our lunch, we talked about our experiences so far. We both agreed that the Luberon is a truly special place, a region that combines natural beauty with rich cultural heritage. The ochre mines were a highlight, a unique and unforgettable experience. But we were also captivated by the charm of Apt, its fountains, its cathedral, and its lively atmosphere. We felt a deep connection to this region, a sense of belonging that transcended our Malian roots.

After lunch, we indulged in a little retail therapy at Les Choses Simples, a local shop that sells natural products made in Provence. Fatoumata picked up some lavender soap and a scented candle, while I chose a bottle of olive oil and a jar of *tapenade*. We love supporting local businesses and bringing home a little piece of Provence with us.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to La Gaudina Luberon in Goult for dinner. Goult is known for its inviting atmosphere and friendly service. This establishment specializes in a unique blend of traditional French cuisine, scrumptious pastries, and an assortment of fine teas. The charming decor combines rustic elements with modern touches, creating an ambiance that feels both cozy and sophisticated. I opted for their signature dish and Fatoumata enjoyed a light pastry. What a perfect ending to a day full of exploration!

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Chateau lavande and Saint-Hilaire Ancienne Abbaye. I'm looking forward to seeing the lavender fields and learning more about the region's history. We might even stop by Bar Nulle Part Ailleurs for a drink in the evening.

As I reflect on our day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and charm of the Luberon. This region has a way of capturing your heart, of making you feel like you belong. It's a place where history and nature intertwine, where the simple pleasures of life are celebrated, and where the spirit of community thrives. I am so grateful to share this experience with Fatoumata, my partner in life and adventure. Together, we are creating memories that will last a lifetime.
