Romantic Getaway to the Luberon Region
Day 9: A Final Day of Serenity in Luberon
Discovering ancient wonders and savoring local flavors on our last day in the Luberon. Join us for a peaceful and reflective journey.
Farewell, Luberon!
As our romantic getaway to the Luberon region draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared. Today was a day of simple pleasures, a gentle exploration of history and local charm that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of this beautiful region. It’s hard to believe our time here is already up, but as they say, all good things must come to an end.
Our final day began with a delightful breakfast at L'AUBERGE DES CARRIERES LUBERON. The morning air was crisp and clean, a refreshing change from the Montreal humidity I'm accustomed to. Fatoumata and I sat on the terrace, enjoying the stunning views of the surrounding countryside while savoring fresh croissants and strong coffee. It was the perfect way to start a day filled with exploration and reflection. The quiet moments like these, just the two of us, are what I cherish most about these trips.

Our first stop was the magnificent Pont Julien, an ancient Roman bridge that has stood the test of time. Driving there, I felt a sense of anticipation, eager to witness this historical landmark that I had read so much about. As we approached, the bridge came into view, its graceful arches spanning the Calavon River. It was truly a sight to behold. Built in 3 BC, Pont Julien is a testament to the ingenuity and skill of Roman engineers. We parked the car and strolled along the bridge, marveling at the precision of the stonework and the enduring strength of the structure. It’s incredible to think that this bridge was used for car traffic until 2005! Now a pedestrian and bicycle path, it continues to serve as a link to the past.

As we walked, I couldn't help but imagine the countless travelers who had crossed this bridge over the centuries – Roman soldiers, merchants, pilgrims, and locals going about their daily lives. The Pont Julien is more than just a bridge; it’s a symbol of connection, a tangible link to the past that enriches our understanding of the present. The sun was warm on our faces, and the gentle sound of the river flowing beneath us created a sense of tranquility. I took several photos, trying to capture the essence of this remarkable place, knowing that no image could truly do it justice.
To walk across the Pont Julien is to walk through time, connecting with the ancient world and appreciating the enduring legacy of human innovation.
After soaking in the history of Pont Julien, we drove to Apt, a nearby town known for its vibrant market and charming atmosphere. Our mission was to find Le Nageur, a sculpture that I had heard was a must-see. Apt itself is a delightful town, with narrow streets, colorful buildings, and a bustling energy. As we wandered through the town, we stumbled upon local shops and cafes. We eventually found Le Nageur, a striking piece of art that immediately caught my eye. I later learned that Catherine Demaugé Bost created this sculpture. It was a figure frozen in a moment of athletic prowess. The sculpture seemed to capture the essence of human potential, a reminder that we are all capable of achieving great things if we set our minds to it. It was inspiring to see art that celebrated the human form and the spirit of determination.

For lunch, we stopped at Cafe de France, a charming local spot that was bustling with activity. We managed to snag a table outside and ordered a couple of classic French dishes. I opted for the croque monsieur, while Fatoumata chose the salade niçoise. The food was simple but delicious, and the atmosphere was lively and convivial. It was the perfect place to soak in the local culture and enjoy a leisurely meal. As we ate, we watched the locals chatting and laughing, their faces animated and full of life. It was a reminder that sometimes the best travel experiences are the ones that allow you to connect with the people and the culture of a place.

After lunch, we decided to explore Le Potager Du Chateau, a local shop known for its selection of regional products. As someone who enjoys cooking, I was eager to see what local ingredients and delicacies I could find. The shop was a treasure trove of culinary delights, with shelves overflowing with olive oils, herbs, spices, and artisanal cheeses. The aroma alone was enough to make my mouth water. I purchased a few items to bring back to Montreal, including some herbes de Provence, lavender honey, and a small jar of tapenade. I knew that these flavors would transport me back to Luberon long after we had left.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we decided to take a detour to Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt to visit the Jardins du Château de Bourgane, a place I had read about in my guidebook. Though we didn't initially plan to visit, I recalled it being described as an oasis of tranquility, and I thought it would be the perfect way to end our day. The gardens are set around an 18th-century country house and feature tree-lined avenues, boxwood parterres, fountains, and a kitchen garden. As we strolled through the gardens, we marveled at the meticulous landscaping and the serene atmosphere. The sound of water trickling from the fountains created a soothing backdrop, and the scent of flowers filled the air. It was a truly magical place, a hidden gem that offered a moment of respite from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
As the sun began to set, we made our way to La Bastide for our final dinner in Luberon. This restaurant had been recommended to us by several locals, and we were eager to experience its renowned cuisine. The restaurant was elegant and refined, with a warm and inviting atmosphere. We were seated at a table with a view of the surrounding countryside, and as we watched the sun dip below the horizon, we felt a sense of contentment wash over us. The meal was exquisite, a culinary journey that showcased the best of Provençal cuisine. Each dish was expertly prepared and beautifully presented, and the flavors were complex and nuanced. It was the perfect way to celebrate our time in Luberon, a fitting end to a romantic and unforgettable getaway.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Montreal. While I'm eager to see Aminata and Ibrahim, I know I'll miss the slow pace of life, the stunning landscapes, and the delicious food of Luberon. This trip has been a reminder of the importance of taking time to disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and to reconnect with the people and places that matter most. As I reflect on our time here, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a beautiful and enriching part of the world. Luberon, you have captured my heart, and I know I will return someday.
As I prepare for our departure, I'm already thinking about how I can incorporate some of the lessons and experiences from this trip into my daily life. Perhaps I'll start by trying to cook more Provençal dishes, or maybe I'll simply make a point of slowing down and savoring the simple pleasures of life, like a good cup of coffee or a walk in the park. Whatever I do, I know that the memories of this romantic getaway to Luberon will stay with me for a long time to come.
Thank you for joining me on this journey. Until next time, au revoir!
