Day 2: Stepping Back in Time: Exploring the Ancient Wonders of Luberon
Discover the timeless charm of Luberon's historic villages, olive oil estates, and exquisite dining experiences. A journey through Provence.
Echoes of the Past in Luberon
Today, Fatoumata and I immersed ourselves in the heart of Luberon, a region where time seems to slow down, allowing you to truly appreciate the beauty of simplicity and history. From ancient stone villages to the rich flavors of Provençal cuisine, every moment was a step back in time. It’s amazing how much history is packed into such a small area.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at La Table de L'Épicier in Bonnieux. This charming spot, recommended by several locals, was the perfect way to start our morning. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air as we settled into a cozy corner. Fatoumata chose a classic French breakfast of croissants and café au lait, while I opted for a hearty omelet filled with local cheeses and herbs. It was simple, yet incredibly satisfying, and set the tone for a day of culinary exploration. I made sure to take note of the restaurant's ambiance, thinking it might inspire some changes in our Montreal kitchen back home. I love how travel can give you new ideas for your living space.

After breakfast, we set off to explore the Village des Bories, an ancient hamlet of dry-stone huts located near Gordes. As we drove along the narrow, winding roads, the landscape transformed into a picturesque scene of rolling hills and vineyards. The anticipation was building, and I couldn't wait to see what this unique village had to offer. I was also careful to remember to buy a sunhat and portable phone charger tomorrow at the shop 'Vous êtes Ici - Boutique de Créateurs', as I forgot to bring them with me.
Arriving at the Village des Bories felt like stepping into another world. The cluster of stone huts, built without mortar, stood as a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the people who once lived here. We wandered through the narrow pathways, peeking into the huts that once served as homes, workshops, and animal shelters. The structures were remarkably well-preserved, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of the villagers who inhabited this place centuries ago. I imagined families gathering around a fire, sharing stories and meals, their lives dictated by the rhythm of the seasons. The simplicity of their existence was both humbling and inspiring.

The beauty of Luberon lies not just in its landscapes, but in the stories etched into its ancient stones.
Fatoumata was particularly fascinated by the architectural techniques used to construct the huts. As an educator, she was thinking about how she could explain to her students the concept of building with natural materials and the importance of preserving historical sites. We spent a good hour exploring every nook and cranny of the village, taking photos and soaking in the atmosphere. It was a truly unique experience, one that transported us back in time and allowed us to appreciate the rich history of this region.
Leaving the Village des Bories, we drove towards the Moulin à huile d'olive & Domaine Bastide du Laval, an olive oil mill and estate in Cadenet. The drive itself was a treat, with the Luberon countryside unfolding before us in all its glory. The sun was shining, the sky was a brilliant blue, and the air was filled with the scent of lavender and thyme. It was the quintessential Provençal experience.

Upon arriving at the Domaine Bastide du Laval, we were greeted by the sight of endless rows of olive trees stretching across the landscape. The estate was a working farm, producing high-quality olive oil using traditional methods. We joined a guided tour of the mill, where we learned about the process of extracting oil from the olives, from harvesting to pressing. The guide explained the different varieties of olives grown on the estate and the unique characteristics of each oil. It was fascinating to see how much care and attention went into producing this liquid gold.
Of course, no visit to an olive oil mill would be complete without a tasting. We sampled several different oils, each with its own distinct flavor profile. Fatoumata, with her keen palate, was able to discern the subtle nuances of each oil, while I simply enjoyed the rich, fruity taste. We purchased a few bottles to take home, eager to share the flavors of Luberon with our friends and family in Montreal. I also picked up a jar of tapenade, a Provençal spread made from olives, capers, and anchovies, which I knew would be a hit at our next gathering.
For lunch, we stopped at Restaurant Les Saveurs Gourmandes in Ménerbes, a charming village known for its stunning views and artistic heritage. The restaurant was tucked away on a quiet street, with a cozy outdoor terrace overlooking the valley. We were immediately charmed by the ambiance, which was both elegant and inviting. The menu featured classic Provençal dishes made with fresh, local ingredients. Fatoumata ordered the ratatouille, a vegetable stew that is a staple of Provençal cuisine, while I chose the grilled lamb chops with rosemary and garlic. The food was exquisite, bursting with flavors that reflected the region's culinary traditions. The service was impeccable, and we felt pampered and well-cared for.

As we savored our meal, we watched the sun slowly descend over the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape. It was a magical moment, one that we will cherish for years to come. We talked about our day, reminiscing about the ancient stones of the Village des Bories and the fragrant olive groves of Domaine Bastide du Laval. We felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of Luberon, and for each other's company.
As the day drew to a close, we decided to unwind at Bar Coquillade in Gargas. The bar was part of a larger resort, known for its luxurious accommodations and stunning views. We ordered a couple of cocktails and settled into comfortable chairs on the terrace. The atmosphere was lively, with music playing and people chatting and laughing. We watched as the stars began to appear in the night sky, their twinkling lights adding to the enchantment of the evening. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Finally, we had dinner at Le Galoubet in Ménerbes. The restaurant was known for its traditional Provençal cuisine and cozy atmosphere. We were seated at a table by the window, overlooking the village square. The menu featured hearty dishes like beef stew, daube, and truffle ravioli. Fatoumata ordered the beef stew, while I opted for the truffle ravioli. The food was comforting and delicious, the perfect way to warm ourselves on a cool evening. The service was friendly and attentive, and we felt like we were dining in someone's home.
