Exploring Ancient Delphi with Friends
Day 10: Journey to the Peak of Love: Exploring Delphi's Hidden Gems
Discover the enchanting Stalactite Cave Levavot and the romantic Peak of Love in Delphi, a day filled with natural beauty and local flavors.
Delphi's Embrace: A Day of Discovery
Today was a day for venturing beyond the well-trodden paths of Delphi, a day for embracing the whispers of nature and the hidden stories etched into the landscape. With my friends, I set out to explore two lesser-known, yet equally captivating, destinations: the Stalactite Cave Levavot and the aptly named Peak of Love. It was a journey that blended the thrill of exploration with the simple joys of good food and shared laughter, painting a vivid memory against the backdrop of this ancient land.
Our day began, as many delightful days do, with a hearty breakfast at TAVERNA BASANOS. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our adventures. It's funny, I always feel a little closer to my French roots when I'm in a place that values good food and lingering conversation as much as the Greeks do. It reminded me of Sunday mornings back in Brive-la-Gaillarde, sharing stories and planning escapades with my family.

Fueled and eager, we set off towards the Stalactite Cave Levavot. The drive itself was a treat, winding through olive groves and past small villages that seemed untouched by time. The landscape was vibrant with spring, a stark contrast to the monochrome days of winter in Sarnen. When we arrived at the cave, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I've seen caves before, of course, but there was something different about this one. Perhaps it was the sense of anticipation, the feeling of stepping into a world hidden from the sun.

Inside, the air was cool and damp, carrying the scent of earth and stone. The stalactites and stalagmites formed intricate patterns, like frozen waterfalls suspended in time. The silence was broken only by the occasional drip of water, a gentle reminder of the cave's slow, patient growth. It was a humbling experience, standing in the presence of such ancient beauty. Sophie, my daughter, would have loved this place. She's always been fascinated by geology, collecting rocks and minerals like treasures. I made a mental note to bring her here someday.
Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of the world, where nature whispers its secrets to those who listen.
After emerging from the cave, blinking in the sunlight, we decided to make our way to the Peak of Love. The name alone was enough to pique our interest, and the promise of panoramic views sealed the deal. The drive was a bit more challenging this time, the road winding steeply uphill. But the effort was well worth it. As we reached the peak, the landscape opened up before us, a breathtaking tapestry of mountains, valleys, and sea.

The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. We stood in silence for a few moments, simply taking it all in. It was a view that seemed to stretch on forever, a reminder of the vastness and beauty of the world. I could see why this place was called the Peak of Love. It was a place to share a moment of quiet connection, a place to feel grateful for the beauty that surrounds us.
Lunch was a delightful affair at Taverna Christos. After all that fresh air and exploring, we had worked up quite an appetite. We feasted on traditional Greek dishes, savoring the flavors of fresh seafood, grilled meats, and vibrant salads. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the kind of place where you instantly feel like a local. It was the perfect opportunity to relax, share stories, and laugh together, strengthening the bonds of friendship that make these trips so special.

In the afternoon, we indulged in a bit of shopping at Michailou. I always enjoy finding unique souvenirs to bring back home, little reminders of our travels. Michailou was a treasure trove of local crafts, from hand-painted ceramics to intricate textiles. I picked up a beautiful blue and white plate, a perfect addition to my collection. Hans, my husband, appreciates the craftsmanship of these items, a shared appreciation for the handmade that connects us across our different passions.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, we made our way back towards Delphi, stopping for dinner at To Archontiko. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a menu that showcased the best of local cuisine. We shared a variety of dishes, each one bursting with flavor and cooked with love. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration, surrounded by good friends and delicious food.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that it wasn't just about the places we visited, but about the experiences we shared. It was about the laughter, the conversations, and the moments of quiet contemplation. It was about discovering the hidden gems of Delphi and creating memories that will last a lifetime. These are the moments I cherish, the ones that remind me why I love to travel, why I love to explore, and why I love to share these experiences with my friends and with you, my readers.
Tomorrow, we will delve deeper into the ancient heart of Delphi, visiting the Tholos of Athena Pronaia and experiencing the Parnassos Experience. I'm particularly excited about the Tholos, its circular shape and elegant columns have always fascinated me. And in the evening, we'll unwind at Melopoleio, a local bar, to soak in the atmosphere and perhaps share a glass of wine or two. I anticipate another day filled with history, beauty, and the joy of discovery.
As I sit here, penning down the events of the day, I am reminded of a quote by Henry Miller, one that resonates deeply with my own experiences:
One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.
Indeed, Delphi has offered me a new way of seeing things, a new appreciation for the beauty that lies hidden just beyond the surface, waiting to be discovered. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Oh, and I mustn't forget to mention that I still haven't replaced my sunglasses or found a portable phone charger. Those two items remain stubbornly absent from my travel kit. Perhaps tomorrow's shopping trip will prove more fruitful!
Until then, au revoir from Delphi!
