Orvieto's Warm Embrace

Today marked the beginning of our family's exploration of Orvieto, a city perched high on a volcanic plug, radiating a unique blend of history, art, and Umbrian charm. As we settled into Palazzo Piccolomini, the anticipation for our adventure was palpable. Little did we know, Orvieto would captivate us with its stunning cathedral, artistic treasures, and delightful local crafts.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Antica Bottega al Duomo. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploration. We savored local pastries and planned our itinerary, eager to immerse ourselves in Orvieto's rich heritage.

Our first stop was the magnificent Duomo di Orvieto. As we approached the piazza, the cathedral's façade took our breath away. The golden mosaics sparkled in the morning sun, and the intricate details of the rose window were mesmerizing. The Duomo, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, stands as a testament to the city's devotion and artistic prowess.

The Duomo di Orvieto is not just a cathedral; it's a symphony of faith, art, and history, resonating with centuries of devotion and architectural brilliance.

Stepping inside, we were enveloped in a sense of awe. The soaring nave, adorned with sculptures of the Apostles, led our eyes towards the altar. The stained glass windows cast colorful patterns on the stone floor, creating a serene atmosphere. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the Chapel of the Corporal, which houses the sacred linen from the Miracle of Bolsena. I tried to explain to her the story behind it, about the priest who doubted transubstantiation and then the host bled onto the altar cloth. History coming alive right before our eyes!

We spent hours wandering through the Duomo, admiring the masterpieces within. The Chapel of San Brizio, with its frescoes by Luca Signorelli depicting scenes from the Last Judgment, was particularly striking. The vivid colors and dramatic imagery left a lasting impression on all of us. Hans, ever the pragmatist, was impressed by the engineering and the sheer scale of the structure, while Sophie, with her artistic inclinations, was captivated by the intricate details and the stories told through the art.

Leaving the Duomo, we strolled through the charming streets of Orvieto, soaking in the atmosphere of this ancient city. We passed by artisan shops, quaint cafes, and historic buildings, each telling a story of Orvieto's past. The city's origins trace back to the Etruscans, who recognized the strategic importance of its elevated location. Over the centuries, Orvieto has been a papal residence, a center of art and culture, and a testament to the resilience of its people.

Lunch at Trattoria del Moro Aronne was a delightful experience. The trattoria, nestled in a medieval alley, offered a cozy and authentic Umbrian ambiance. We savored local specialties such as *carbonara di fave e baffo* (carbonara with fava beans and pork cheek) and *nidi di rondine pecorino e miele* (“bird nest” lasagna with pecorino cheese and honey), each dish bursting with flavor and tradition. Even Sophie, who can be a picky eater, enjoyed the *nidi di rondine*, declaring it the best lasagna she had ever tasted. Hans and I appreciated the hearty flavors and the use of fresh, local ingredients.

After lunch, we visited the Museo Emilio Greco - Orvieto, located in the Palazzo Soliano next to the Duomo. The museum houses a collection of sculptures and graphic works by the Sicilian sculptor Emilio Greco, including models for the bronze doors of the Duomo. As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I was particularly interested in Greco's artistic process and his connection to Orvieto. The museum provided valuable insights into his work, showcasing his talent for capturing the human form and emotion. Sophie, inspired by the sculptures, spent time sketching in her travel journal, trying to capture the essence of Greco's artistry.

One of the highlights of the museum was the preparatory models for the doors of the Duomo, which Greco's daughter donated to the museum. The doors depict the Seven Corporal Works of Mercy, a theme that resonated deeply with Greco. He recalled that the first panel he created was the Visit to the Imprisoned, inspired by John XXIII's visit to Regina Coeli. The museum also showcased Greco's female figures, known for their sensual beauty and moral perfection. These works, such as Iphigenia, Grande Pattinatrice n. 2, and Memoria dell' Estate, represent Greco's unique style and his ability to capture the essence of humanity.

In the late afternoon, we explored La Torretta Ceramiche Artistiche, a charming ceramics shop. Orvieto has a long tradition of ceramics-making, dating back to Etruscan times. Loredana, the artisan, creates colorful and quirky pieces, ranging from plates and vases to mirrors and lamps. Sophie was particularly drawn to the hand-painted designs, while Hans admired the craftsmanship and the intricate details. We purchased a few small pieces as souvenirs, each a reminder of our time in Orvieto.

As the day drew to a close, we enjoyed dinner at Ristorante Grotte del Funaro Nuova Tourist. This atmospheric restaurant is set in a medieval quarter, occupying a charming vaulted grotto that was once an Etruscan cave and a rope-maker's workshop. The ambiance was magical, with soft lighting and the echoes of conversations filling the air. We savored traditional Umbrian dishes, such as homemade pasta and grilled meat, accompanied by a bottle of local Orvieto wine. The restaurant's unique setting and delicious food made for a memorable dining experience.

Looking back on our first day in Orvieto, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we shared as a family. From the awe-inspiring Duomo to the artistic treasures of the Museo Emilio Greco and the delightful local crafts, Orvieto has captured our hearts. As we prepare for tomorrow's adventures, including exploring Orvieto Underground and the Pozzo di San Patrizio, I am excited to see what other wonders this enchanting city has in store for us. We might even cap off the day with a visit to Bacaro Orvieto, a local bar, for a taste of Orvieto's nightlife.

As I sit here in our room at Palazzo Piccolomini, the sounds of Orvieto slowly fading into the night, I am reminded of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, but about experiencing new cultures, connecting with history, and creating lasting memories with my family. Orvieto, with its divine beauty and artistic wonder, has given us a day we will cherish forever.

Tomorrow, we delve into the depths of Orvieto's underground and explore the fascinating Pozzo di San Patrizio. I anticipate more stories and discoveries as we continue our journey through this captivating city. I am especially looking forward to breakfast at Caffè Clandestino - Orvieto and lunch at Ristorante Caffè Capitano del Popolo.
