Reaching for the Sky in Orvieto

Today, Orvieto revealed its breathtaking panoramic views and hidden vintage treasures. From the imposing Rocca Albornoziana to the soaring Torre del Moro, each step was a journey through history and beauty. Come along as I share the highlights of our day, filled with stunning vistas and charming discoveries.

The morning began with the aroma of freshly baked pastries at La Bottega del Pozzo. This delightful little spot, recommended by several locals, was the perfect place to fuel up for a day of exploration. Sophie was particularly thrilled with her chocolate-filled croissant, while Hans enjoyed a classic cappuccino. As for me, I savored a slice of torta della nonna, a traditional Italian custard tart that was simply divine. It’s these small, authentic experiences that truly make a trip memorable.

With our appetites satisfied, we set off towards the Rocca Albornoziana, a fortress that promised unparalleled views of the surrounding Umbrian countryside. The walk itself was a treat, winding through Orvieto’s charming streets. I couldn't help but pause every few steps to admire the flower-filled window boxes and the intricate details of the medieval architecture. It felt like stepping back in time, each stone whispering stories of centuries past. Hans, ever the observant one, pointed out the subtle variations in the stonework, evidence of the different eras during which the fortress was built. It's fascinating how history is etched into the very fabric of these places.

Arriving at the Rocca Albornoziana, we were immediately struck by its imposing presence. Built in the 14th century by Cardinal Albornoz, the fortress has served various purposes over the centuries, from a military stronghold to a papal residence. Today, it stands as a testament to Orvieto’s strategic importance and rich history. Sophie, always eager to learn more, peppered me with questions about the fortress's past, prompting me to recount tales of battles, sieges, and noble families.

The climb to the top of the Rocca was well worth the effort. From the ramparts, the view was simply breathtaking. The rolling hills of Umbria stretched out before us, a patchwork of vineyards, olive groves, and fields of golden wheat. In the distance, we could see the winding Tiber River snaking its way through the landscape. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of wildflowers and sun-baked earth. It was a moment of pure serenity, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of modern life and connect with the beauty of nature.

Sometimes, the best way to understand a place is to see it from above, to gain a sense of perspective and appreciate its beauty in its entirety.

After soaking in the views from the Rocca Albornoziana, we made our way to the Torre del Moro, another of Orvieto’s iconic landmarks. This medieval tower, located in the heart of the city, offers another unique vantage point, providing a different perspective on Orvieto’s urban landscape. The tower's history is intertwined with the city's political and social life, having served as a watchtower, a bell tower, and a symbol of civic pride.

The ascent to the top of the Torre del Moro was a bit more challenging than the Rocca, involving a narrow, winding staircase. But the reward was well worth the effort. From the top, we had a panoramic view of Orvieto’s rooftops, its narrow streets, and its magnificent Duomo. The city seemed to unfold beneath us, a tapestry of terracotta tiles, ancient stones, and vibrant colors. Sophie, armed with her camera, captured countless photos, determined to preserve the memory of this special moment.

For lunch, we ventured to Trattoria la Palomba, a charming restaurant known for its traditional Umbrian cuisine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with rustic décor and a lively buzz of conversation. We started with a selection of local cured meats and cheeses, accompanied by crusty bread and a glass of Orvieto Classico, the region’s renowned white wine. For our main courses, Hans opted for the wild boar ragu, while Sophie chose the truffle pasta. I decided to try the umbricelli, a thick, hand-rolled pasta served with a simple tomato and garlic sauce. Each dish was a celebration of local flavors, prepared with love and care.

After lunch, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Stella Vintage Store. This quirky little shop, tucked away on a side street, was a treasure trove of vintage clothing, accessories, and home décor items. As a librarian with a love for history, I have a soft spot for anything that tells a story. I spent a happy hour browsing through the racks of vintage dresses, admiring the craftsmanship and the unique designs. Sophie, with her keen eye for fashion, unearthed a beautiful silk scarf, which she promptly added to her collection. Hans, surprisingly, found a vintage leather belt that fit him perfectly. It was a fun, unexpected detour that added a touch of whimsy to our day.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we strolled back towards Palazzo Piccolomini, our home away from home. The setting sun cast a golden glow over the city, painting the ancient stones in warm, inviting hues. We paused for a moment to admire the Duomo, its façade shimmering in the fading light. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a reminder of the beauty and magic that Orvieto has to offer.

For dinner, we decided to try Il Malandrino Bistrot, a cozy restaurant known for its creative cuisine and intimate atmosphere. The menu featured a mix of traditional Umbrian dishes and modern interpretations, showcasing the region’s culinary diversity. I started with the zucchini blossoms stuffed with ricotta cheese, while Hans opted for the roasted pigeon. Sophie, always adventurous, ordered the black truffle risotto. Each dish was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly delicious. The service was attentive and friendly, making us feel like honored guests.

As we savored our final bites, we reflected on the day’s adventures. From the panoramic views of the Rocca Albornoziana and Torre del Moro to the vintage finds at Stella Vintage Store, each experience had added a unique layer to our understanding of Orvieto. We had climbed to new heights, both literally and figuratively, and discovered hidden treasures along the way. It was a day of exploration, discovery, and connection, a reminder of the joy of travel and the beauty of shared experiences.

Tomorrow, we plan to delve deeper into Orvieto's ancient past with a visit to the Etruscan necropolis of Crocifisso del Tufo and the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Orvieto. And perhaps, we'll end the day with a glass of wine at Enoteca al Duomo. I’m already looking forward to uncovering more of Orvieto’s hidden gems.

Until then, arrivederci from Orvieto!
