Day 4: Crossing Bridges and Charming Boars: A Day of Florentine Delights
Wander through Florence's iconic landmarks, from Ponte Vecchio's charm to Mercato del Porcellino's folklore, on a delightful family adventure.
Florentine Footsteps
Today, Florence unfolded before us in a tapestry of ancient stones, vibrant markets, and culinary delights. The crisp January air nipped at our cheeks as we embarked on a journey through the heart of this Renaissance city, each step revealing a new layer of its rich history and captivating charm. It was a day of iconic landmarks, hidden corners, and the kind of immersive experiences that make travel so rewarding.
Our Florentine adventure began with a hearty breakfast at Cantinetta delle Terme. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Italian coffee filled the cozy space, a perfect start to a day of exploration. Hans, ever the early riser, was already animatedly discussing the day's itinerary, while Sophie, fueled by a pain au chocolat, was busy sketching in her notebook. It's moments like these, sharing simple pleasures in a new setting, that I cherish most when we travel as a family.
First on our list was the Ponte Vecchio, Florence's oldest bridge. As we approached, the bridge's unique silhouette came into view, its stone arches seemingly defying gravity as they stretched across the Arno River. The Ponte Vecchio, miraculously spared during World War II, stood as a testament to Florence's resilience and enduring beauty. As we walked across, shoulder to shoulder with fellow travelers, I couldn't help but marvel at the shops clinging to either side. Once home to butchers, they are now filled with goldsmiths and jewelers, their windows sparkling with exquisite creations. I imagined the Medici family traversing this very bridge, using the Vasari Corridor to move discreetly between the Palazzo Vecchio and the Pitti Palace. The history of this bridge is palpable, each stone whispering tales of centuries past. It is amazing to think that the bridge was built in medieval times, around 1345, and has stood the test of time.

The beauty of Florence lies not just in its monuments, but in the stories etched into its very stones.
Next, we ventured towards the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. This basilica, a Dominican monastery, stands as a distinguished monument to the artistic and religious history of Florence. The basilica is called New St. Mary's because the original church founded on this site in the ninth century was also dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary before the Dominican friars were given possession of it. The basilica's facade is a masterpiece, a harmonious blend of Gothic and Renaissance styles. The lower part of the facade is in Romanesque and classical style. Inside, the basilica was a sanctuary of art and history. The soaring ceilings, stained glass windows, and intricate frescoes transported us to another era. I was particularly struck by Masaccio's Trinity, a groundbreaking work that showcased the artist's mastery of perspective. Sophie, with her keen eye for detail, was fascinated by the astronomical instruments placed on the facade by Egnazio Danti, a testament to the intersection of science and art in Renaissance Florence. As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I always find myself drawn to these places where history comes alive.

Leaving the basilica, we made our way to the Mercato del Porcellino, also known as the Mercato Nuovo. The market has three names: Loggia del Porcellino, Loggia del Mercato Nuovo, and the Straw Market. The air buzzed with the energy of vendors hawking their wares and tourists seeking souvenirs. Here, the main attraction is the bronze statue of a wild boar, known as Il Porcellino. Legend has it that rubbing the boar's snout brings good luck and ensures a return visit to Florence. Of course, we all took our turn, adding our touch to the already gleaming snout. Sophie even placed a coin in the boar's mouth, hoping it would fall through the grate below – a tradition said to grant wishes. I bought a small leather-bound journal from one of the stalls, a perfect place to record my thoughts and impressions of this incredible journey.

For lunch, we indulged in a culinary experience at Golden View Firenze. The restaurant lived up to its name, offering breathtaking views of the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio. The food was exquisite, a celebration of Italian flavors and fresh ingredients. I savored a plate of handmade pasta with artichokes, while Hans opted for a classic Florentine steak. Sophie, ever adventurous, tried the seafood risotto and declared it a triumph. The atmosphere was elegant yet relaxed, a perfect setting for a leisurely lunch with family.

As the afternoon waned, we sought refuge in the Atrium Bar at the Four Seasons Hotel Firenze. The bar is located inside Palazzo Della Gherardesca. The Atrium Bar is known for its elegant atmosphere. The bar offered a sophisticated ambiance and an extensive cocktail menu. I ordered a classic Negroni, while Hans enjoyed a glass of local Chianti. Sophie, feeling grown-up, opted for a non-alcoholic concoction with fresh fruit and herbs. The pianist played a soothing melody, creating a perfect backdrop for conversation and relaxation. The hotel is known for its remarkable serenity.

For dinner, we ventured to Il Santo Bevitore, a restaurant recommended by several locals. Il Santo Bevitore translates to The Holy Drinker. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with dark wood furniture and candlelight creating a warm ambiance. The menu featured Tuscan specialties with a modern twist. I started with the chicken liver terrine, a luscious and flavorful dish that was a perfect introduction to the region's cuisine. Hans opted for the roasted duck leg, while Sophie chose the potato gnocchi with deer ragout. The food was hearty and satisfying, a perfect end to a day of exploration. The service was excellent, and the wine list was extensive, featuring both local and international selections.

As we walked back to our hotel, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The Ponte Vecchio, now illuminated, looked even more magical than it had in the daylight. The sounds of the city, a mix of languages and laughter, filled the air. I felt a sense of contentment, a feeling of having truly experienced the essence of Florence. It was a day of iconic landmarks, culinary delights, and shared moments, a day that will forever be etched in my memory.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Boboli Gardens, the Pitti Palace, and the Palatine Gallery. I am particularly excited about visiting the Boboli Gardens, as I have heard that they are a true oasis of beauty and tranquility in the heart of the city. Sophie is looking forward to seeing the Pitti Palace, as she is fascinated by the history of the Medici family. And Hans, ever the art enthusiast, is eager to explore the Palatine Gallery. I am sure that tomorrow will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.
As I sit here now, penning these thoughts, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to share my love of travel and history with my family. It's moments like these, exploring new places and cultures together, that strengthen our bonds and create memories that will last a lifetime.
I think I will sleep well tonight. Ciao for now!
