Whispers of the Past, Tastes of Today

Today was a day of exploration that fed both the soul and the body. From delving into the mysteries of ancient ruins to savoring the rich flavors of Peruvian cuisine, every moment was a testament to the vibrant culture and history that permeates this land. I feel so fortunate to be sharing this journey with my family, creating memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

The morning began with a hearty breakfast at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. While I'm not typically one for beer so early, the atmosphere was too inviting to resist. The restaurant offered stunning river views, adding to the charm. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, while Hans enjoyed some of the local craft beer, remarking on its unique flavor. Sophie, ever the adventurous one, tried a bit of both! It was a delightful start to the day, setting the stage for the adventures that lay ahead.

Our first stop was Chincana Chica, an Inca archaeological site nestled in the Sacsayhuamán complex. The name 'Chincana' means 'labyrinth' in Quechua, and as we explored the site, I could understand why. The intricate network of tunnels and passages was a testament to the Incas' advanced engineering skills. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the stories of the tunnels connecting various ceremonial centers, imagining the ancient rituals that might have taken place within these stone walls.

As we wandered through Chincana Chica, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the ingenuity of the Inca civilization. The stones were so precisely carved and fitted together, a true testament to their mastery of stonework. I imagined the countless hours of labor that went into creating this site, a place that served not only as a strategic point but also as a connection to the spiritual world.

Next on our itinerary was KERNEL TAMBO, another site steeped in history and cultural significance. Reaching it involved a bit of a trek, but the stunning landscapes made every step worthwhile. The rolling hills and picturesque views were a feast for the eyes, and I found myself stopping frequently to capture the beauty with my camera. Hans, with his practical carpenter's eye, was particularly impressed by the architecture, noting the way the structures blended seamlessly with the natural environment.

KERNEL TAMBO offered a different perspective on Inca life, showcasing a blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. We learned about the traditions and history of the region, gaining a deeper appreciation for the people who once called this place home. Sophie, with her keen interest in art history, was captivated by the architectural details, sketching some of the more intricate designs in her notebook. I was reminded of our visits to local historical sites in Switzerland, and how important it is to preserve these treasures for future generations.

After a morning filled with historical exploration, our stomachs began to rumble, signaling it was time for lunch. We headed to Yaku Restaurant, enticed by its promise of authentic Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant's ambiance was warm and inviting, and we were greeted with genuine hospitality. We savored a variety of traditional dishes, each bursting with unique flavors and spices. Sophie, always eager to try new things, declared the ceviche her favorite, while Hans and I enjoyed a hearty stew, perfect for warming us up after our outdoor adventures. It was a delightful culinary experience, a true taste of Peru.

With our appetites satisfied, we decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy. Artesanias Maki was our destination, a shop known for showcasing the work of artisans from all over Peru. I was immediately drawn to the colorful textiles and intricate carvings, each piece telling a story of Peruvian culture and craftsmanship. Sophie, with her artistic eye, spent ages admiring the various pieces, carefully selecting a few small souvenirs to take back home. I purchased a beautiful hand-woven scarf, a memento of our time in Choquequirao, and Hans found a unique wooden carving that reminded him of his own woodworking back in Switzerland.

As the afternoon drew to a close, we made our way to Mistura Grill & Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant boasted spectacular views of the Plaza de Armas, providing a stunning backdrop for our meal. The menu was a fusion of Peruvian and international cuisine, offering something for everyone. We enjoyed a leisurely dinner, savoring each bite while recounting the day's adventures. The atmosphere was cozy and relaxed, a perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

Looking back on the day, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a rich and diverse culture. From the ancient ruins of Chincana Chica and KERNEL TAMBO to the culinary delights of local restaurants, every moment was a testament to the beauty and history of Peru. Sharing these experiences with my family has made them even more special, creating memories that we will cherish for years to come.

As I sit here writing this, I am already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. Our itinerary includes PIRÁMIDES KERNEL and the Inca Trail, promising more opportunities to explore the wonders of this land. We also plan to dine at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT for breakfast, Pachapapa for lunch, and Restaurant Bistro Bar Indio Feliz for dinner, eager to continue our culinary journey through Peru. And perhaps, if the mood strikes, we'll end the day with a drink at SUPAY, soaking in the vibrant nightlife of the region. Until then, I bid you goodnight from the heart of the Andes, filled with the echoes of the past and the promise of new discoveries.

The weather in November can be unpredictable, with the rainy season just beginning. We've been fortunate to have mostly clear days, but we're prepared for rain with our trusty ponchos and waterproof gear. The temperature has been mild during the day, but it gets quite chilly at night, so warm clothing is essential. Despite the potential for rain, November can still be a great time to visit Choquequirao, as the crowds are smaller and the landscapes are lush and green.
