First Impressions of Cusco
After our long journey from Switzerland, arriving in Cusco felt like stepping into a vibrant tapestry of history, culture, and unexpected delights. Today was all about acclimatizing to the altitude, soaking in the local atmosphere, and making sure we were fully prepared for our trek to Choquequirao tomorrow. The air is crisp, the sun is warm, and the energy of this city is simply infectious.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mapacho Craft Beer Restaurant. I know, beer might not be the first thing that comes to mind for breakfast, but this place was recommended for its overall menu and the atmosphere. I opted for something a bit more traditional – a lovely plate of eggs and local bread, while Hans enjoyed a coffee. Sophie, of course, was thrilled with the fresh fruit selection. It was the perfect start to a day of exploration.

Our first stop was the Valley of the Goblins, a quirky and enchanting place located in the San Sebastian district. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but the name alone piqued my curiosity. And what we found was a delightful surprise! The valley is filled with rocks, trees, and dozens of sculpted figures of goblins, leprechauns, and brownies. It felt like stepping into a children's storybook, but with a distinctly Andean twist, as there were also sculptures that pay homage to Inca culture.

Sophie was absolutely captivated, running from one sculpture to another, her imagination running wild. Hans and I enjoyed the whimsical atmosphere and the stunning views overlooking Cusco. It was a fun and lighthearted way to start our Peruvian adventure. The park is relatively new, inaugurated in 2021, and is also known as Campana Huancac because of a stone formation that resembles a bell. I must admit, I felt a bit like a child again myself, marveling at the creativity and attention to detail that went into each sculpture.

After our goblin adventure, we delved into history at the HUACA DE PACHACUTEQ, an ancient temple complex dedicated to Pachacutec, the ninth Sapa Inca. As a librarian specializing in historical archives, I was particularly excited about this site. Pachacutec is credited with expanding the Inca Empire and transforming Cusco into a thriving capital, so visiting this huaca felt like stepping back in time to the very heart of Incan civilization.

The stone structures were impressive, and I could almost feel the weight of history as I walked through the remnants of ceremonial platforms and ritual spaces. The site also offered panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, and I took a moment to imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago. Sophie, though initially less enthusiastic about the historical aspect, was soon drawn in by the stories our guide shared about Inca rituals and beliefs. It's moments like these, when I see her connecting with history in a tangible way, that make these family trips so rewarding.

Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

For lunch, we headed to Chicha por Gaston Acurio, a restaurant recommended for its modern take on Peruvian cuisine. Gaston Acurio is a renowned Peruvian chef, and I was eager to experience his culinary creations. The restaurant itself was lovely, with a pleasant ambiance and a vibrant atmosphere. I decided to try the ceviche, a classic Peruvian dish, and it was absolutely divine – fresh, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. Hans opted for a traditional stew, while Sophie, ever the adventurous eater, chose a causa, a layered potato dish with avocado and chicken. We all left feeling satisfied and ready for more exploring.

In the afternoon, with our trek looming, we decided to do some last-minute shopping. We stopped by Rummy Outdoor, a shop recommended for outdoor gear. Although I am quite organised, and made sure to bring all essentials with me, I did forget a portable charger and a travel pillow. I managed to find both items in the shop. It was reassuring to know that we could find any necessary supplies here in Cusco, even if we had forgotten something crucial. I did notice that there were other shops selling outdoor gear around Plaza de Armas, but I wasn’t sure if the items they were selling were genuine.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Inka Wasi Restaurant Cusco for dinner. The restaurant was charming, and the menu featured a variety of traditional Cusco and Peruvian dishes. I decided to try the Lomo Saltado, a popular stir-fry dish with beef, onions, tomatoes, and potatoes, while Hans went for the trout. Sophie, surprisingly, chose the alpaca skewers, eager to try something new. While the food was good, the service was a bit slow. However, the atmosphere was pleasant, and we enjoyed the live music and the overall ambiance of the place.

Before heading back to our accommodation, we took a leisurely stroll through Plaza de Armas, the heart of Cusco. The plaza was bustling with activity, locals and tourists alike enjoying the evening air. The illuminated buildings surrounding the plaza were a sight to behold, and I felt a sense of awe at the history and beauty that surrounded us. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Cusco.

Now, as I sit here writing this, I can feel the altitude settling in, a gentle reminder that we are indeed in the Andes. Tomorrow, our adventure truly begins as we embark on the Choquequirao Trail. We'll start early after breakfast at the Green House, making our way to the Choquequirao Archaeological Park. I'm excited, a little nervous, but mostly filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. I know it will be a challenging trek, but I also know that the rewards – the stunning landscapes, the Incan history, and the shared experience with my family – will be well worth it. I am really looking forward to dinning at SUMAQCHA RESTAURANT tomorrow evening, after a long day of trekking.

I'm so glad we decided to embark on this journey together. It's not just about seeing new places; it's about creating memories, strengthening bonds, and experiencing the world in a deeper, more meaningful way. And who knows what adventures tomorrow will bring?

Until then, goodnight from Cusco!
