A Day of Westfjords Wonders

Today was a beautiful exploration of Iceland's Westfjords, a journey filled with stunning vistas, soothing waters, and the quiet charm of small-town life. It’s days like these that remind me why I set out on this solo adventure in the first place.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Hópið in Tálknafjörður. While it may be known for pizzas, I decided to try something a little more traditional, opting for a satisfying Icelandic breakfast to fuel my adventures. The cozy atmosphere of Hópið was a wonderful start to the day, and I enjoyed chatting briefly with some locals, always eager to hear about their lives and stories. I find that these small interactions often provide the richest insights into a place. I even picked up a few phrases in Icelandic, though I suspect my pronunciation still needs work!

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards Drangajökull útsýnisstaður, a viewpoint offering a panorama of the majestic Drangajökull glacier. The drive itself was an experience, winding through the rugged landscape of the Westfjords. The raw beauty of this region is simply breathtaking. As I drove, I thought about Hans back in Sarnen, meticulously crafting his woodwork. I imagined describing the textures of the landscape to him – the rough, volcanic rock, the smooth, glacial ice, the soft, mossy fields. He would appreciate the natural artistry of this place as much as I do.

Reaching the Drangajökull viewpoint was truly rewarding. The glacier, a vast expanse of ice nestled among the mountains, was a sight to behold. Drangajökull is the northernmost glacier in Iceland and the only one entirely below 1,000 meters, setting it apart from other glaciers in Iceland. I spent a good while simply taking in the view, feeling the crisp air on my face and the stillness of the surroundings. It’s moments like these when I feel most connected to the world, most at peace with myself. I made sure to capture the scene with my camera, hoping to do justice to the sheer scale and beauty of the landscape.

The journey is the destination, and every detour unveils a new facet of the soul.

Next on my itinerary was Krossneslaug, a geothermal pool located in the Strandir region. The drive to Krossneslaug was long, but the anticipation of soaking in a geothermal pool kept me motivated. The landscape shifted as I drove, from mountainous terrain to coastal plains. I passed through small villages, each with its own unique character. I couldn't help but stop at Falda - Hannyrða- og skartgripaverslun, a local craft and jewelry shop. I found a beautiful hand-knitted scarf, a perfect souvenir for Sophie, who I know will appreciate the craftsmanship and the warmth it will provide during the cold Swiss winters.

Finally, I arrived at Krossneslaug. And what a sight it was! This pool is truly special, an infinity pool of sorts, where the warm geothermal waters meet the vast expanse of the ocean. The pool was built in 1954 by local farmers, utilizing natural hot springs. As I eased into the soothing water, I felt the tension melt away from my muscles. The panoramic view of the ocean, with the waves gently crashing against the shore, was incredibly calming. I even spotted a few seals basking on the rocks in the distance. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day’s adventures. As I soaked, I thought about the history of this place, the generations of Icelanders who have come here to relax and rejuvenate. It felt like a privilege to share in that tradition.

Leaving Krossneslaug, I made my way to Hólmavík, where I stopped at Café Riis for lunch. This café is located in Hólmavík's oldest building, built in 1897, with a rich history rooted in the town’s trade. Café Riis prides itself on serving classic Icelandic dishes with a focus on local produce. I opted for one of their famous pizzas, which was indeed delicious. The atmosphere of the café was warm and inviting, and I enjoyed learning about the building’s history from the friendly staff. It’s fascinating to see how these old buildings have been repurposed and continue to serve the community.

With the sun beginning to set, I drove towards Patreksfjörður, where I planned to have dinner at Stúkuhúsið. This café/restaurant is located in the middle of town, right next to the pool, offering stunning views of the fjord. I enjoyed a hearty meal of traditional Icelandic fare, savoring the flavors and reflecting on the day's journey. The soup of the day with freshly baked bread was particularly satisfying. Stúkuhúsið is known for its homemade cakes, so I couldn't resist trying a slice of their rhubarb pie. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and relaxation.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Hornstrandir, immersing myself further in the natural beauty of this remote region. I am looking forward to what tomorrow holds, knowing that each day here brings new discoveries and unforgettable experiences. Perhaps I'll stop by Dokkan Brugghús for a drink in the evening. For now, I'm content to rest and recharge, ready for another day of adventure in Iceland's Westfjords.
