Seaside Serenity and Local Treasures
Today was a beautiful blend of relaxation, exploration, and delicious discoveries here in Monemvasia. It’s amazing how much this small, historic town has to offer. From hidden beaches to local delicacies, every corner holds a new experience. I'm so excited to share the highlights of our day with you all!
Our morning began with a visit to Monemvasia Deli - Edodimopolio. I had read about this place online, and it sounded like the perfect spot to sample local products. As someone who appreciates the unique flavors of different regions, I was eager to explore what Monemvasia had to offer. We wandered through the store, admiring the displays of olive oils, wines, and traditional sweets. I decided to pick up a few bottles of the local extra virgin olive oil, made from a blend of Athinoelia and Koroneiki olives. The shop also offered a taste of Hydromelio, a local drink with ancient roots, made by marrying honey and water. It was surprisingly refreshing, and Amara enjoyed the honey samples. Maximilian, of course, was drawn to the wines, particularly the Malvasia, known for its rich history in this region.

After our delightful tasting experience, we decided to spend some time at Portello Beach. This isn't your typical sandy beach; instead, it's a unique cove located right behind the mighty walls of Monemvasia. The water was crystal clear, and swimming in the shadow of the ancient castle was an unforgettable experience. Amara was thrilled to be swimming so close to such a historic site, and Maximilian and I enjoyed the refreshing dip in the Myrtle Sea. Although it's December, the beach was relatively calm and pleasant, shielded from the northerly winds.

Next on our list was Coin baignade. It was more of a platform for swimming, but a small staircase provided access to the water. We enjoyed a refreshing dip, though it was a bit more adventurous than Portello Beach. Amara loved the novelty of swimming in a different spot, and Maximilian was happy to capture some photos of the stunning views.

For lunch, we chose Athivoli, a restaurant known for its traditional Greek flavors. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and we were quickly seated. I opted for the grilled beef burger, while Maximilian chose the pork steak. Amara, always a fan of simple flavors, enjoyed a plate of French fries. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel after our morning of exploring.

In the afternoon, we explored the local shops, and I was particularly drawn to Olive Wood. As someone who appreciates sustainable and unique crafts, I was fascinated by the beautiful olive wood products on display. I ended up buying a few small bowls and utensils, knowing they would be both beautiful and practical additions to our kitchen back in Heidelberg. The craftsmanship was evident in every piece, and I loved the idea of bringing a little piece of Greece back home with us.

For dinner, we decided on Taverna Asterias, a restaurant with a beachfront view. The location was stunning, right on the beach overlooking the Monemvasia rock. We started with some zucchini balls and grilled sardines, both of which were incredibly fresh and flavorful. For our main courses, Maximilian chose a steak, while I opted for a traditional Greek dish. Amara enjoyed some simple grilled fish. The service was friendly and attentive, and we felt welcomed by the owners, Giannis and Felicia. The sound of the waves and the stunning view made it a truly magical dining experience.

As the day drew to a close, we made a final stop at Chrisovoulo Cafe Restaurant Bar for a relaxing evening drink. The cafe had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and we enjoyed tasting some of the local wines. Maximilian particularly enjoyed the new wine bar, which offered a wide selection of Greek wines. Amara enjoyed a refreshing juice, and I savored the moment, reflecting on our wonderful day in Monemvasia.

Reflecting on today, I am reminded of how much joy can be found in the simple pleasures of life. Exploring a new place, savoring local flavors, and spending quality time with family are the things that truly matter. Monemvasia has a way of slowing you down and allowing you to appreciate the beauty that surrounds you. I feel so grateful for this experience and the memories we are creating as a family.
Tomorrow marks the final day of our family adventure here in Monemvasia. We plan to visit the Hagia Sophia Holy Orthodox Church, explore Elafonisos, and see the Cannon. I am also looking forward to a wine tasting at Byron's Wine Tasting Bar. I'm sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences. I can't wait to share it all with you!
Until then, goodnight from Monemvasia!
P.S. I almost forgot! I did miss a couple of things from our packing list – an adapter for the Greek power outlets and Amara’s favorite snacks. We managed to find a workaround for the adapter, but I definitely need to remember the snacks next time!
I am also looking forward to our next adventure, perhaps somewhere with tea plantations, to remind me of home.
