Farewell, Monemvasia!

As our family adventure in Monemvasia draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible experiences we've shared in this medieval marvel. Today was a day of final explorations, savoring the last moments of this unique destination before we bid it adieu. It's hard to believe our eight days here are already over; it feels like we've only just scratched the surface of all that Monemvasia has to offer.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at the Likinia Hotel, fueling up for a morning of exploration. The hotel, with its stunning city views, has been a comfortable and convenient base for our family, and I'll certainly miss waking up to the sight of Monemvasia's rooftops every morning. Maximilian and Amara were especially excited about today's agenda, which promised a mix of historical intrigue and scenic beauty.

Our first stop was the Hagia Sophia Holy Orthodox Church, perched high in the upper town. The climb was a bit challenging, especially with Amara, but the views from the top were more than worth the effort. The church itself is a testament to Byzantine architecture, and its history is as layered as the cliffs it stands upon. Originally dedicated to Panagia Hodegetria, it has served as a Catholic convent and a mosque before returning to its Orthodox roots. Inside, we admired the fragments of murals dating back to the 12th century, imagining the countless stories this sacred space has witnessed. The wind was strong, but the vistas were breathtaking. It felt like we were standing on the edge of the world, gazing out at the endless Aegean Sea. I tried to explain to Amara the historical significance, pointing out the strategic location and the various influences of different empires. She was more interested in the views, but I hope some of the history sunk in!

Monemvasia is more than just a place; it's a journey through time, a living testament to the resilience of history and the enduring beauty of human creation.

After descending from the upper town, we strolled through the lower town, soaking in the atmosphere of the cobbled streets and stone houses. We passed the cannon in the central square, a silent reminder of Monemvasia's strategic past. Maximilian, ever the architect, was fascinated by the town's defensive walls and the intricate details of the Byzantine churches. Amara, on the other hand, was captivated by the numerous cats that roam the streets, offering them gentle strokes and giggling at their playful antics. The narrow streets, lined with cafes and shops, were bustling with activity, and we enjoyed browsing the local crafts and souvenirs. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted icon as a memento of our trip, hoping to find a special place for it back home in Heidelberg.

For lunch, we decided to try Pita Fresca, a charming little restaurant known for its fresh and delicious food. We ordered a variety of wraps and pies, each bursting with flavor. Amara particularly enjoyed the pizza, while Maximilian raved about the kebab platter. I savored a traditional pie, filled with local cheeses and herbs, and could understand why this place is so popular. The staff was friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed sitting outside, soaking in the lively atmosphere of Monemvasia. It was the perfect spot to relax and recharge before our afternoon adventure.

In the afternoon, we took a short drive to Elafonisos, a small island known for its stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. Although it was December, the weather was mild enough for a leisurely stroll along the shore. The turquoise waters and white sand reminded me of the beaches back home in Sri Lanka, and I felt a pang of homesickness. Amara was thrilled to collect seashells and build sandcastles, while Maximilian and I enjoyed the peacefulness of the surroundings. We imagined what it would be like to visit in the summer, when the beaches are filled with sunbathers and the water is perfect for swimming. Even in winter, Elafonisos exuded a unique charm, and I was grateful for the opportunity to experience its natural beauty.

As the sun began to set, we returned to Monemvasia and sought out Byron's Wine Tasting Bar for a relaxing evening. We sampled several local wines, including the famous Malvasia, a sweet and aromatic wine with a rich history. The cozy atmosphere of the bar was perfect for unwinding after a day of exploration, and we enjoyed chatting with the friendly owner, who shared stories about the region's winemaking traditions. Maximilian, a wine enthusiast, was particularly impressed by the quality of the local wines, and we purchased a few bottles to take home with us. Amara, of course, opted for a glass of grape juice, happily coloring in her travel journal while we savored our wine. It was a perfect family moment, a memory I will cherish for years to come.

For our final dinner in Monemvasia, we chose Emvasis Cafe - Cocktail Bar, enticed by its stunning views and delicious-looking menu. We weren't disappointed! The food was excellent, and the cocktails were expertly crafted. As we savored our meal, we reminisced about our favorite moments of the trip, from exploring the upper town to swimming in the crystal-clear waters of Elafonisos. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, and we felt like we were truly part of the Monemvasia community. It was the perfect way to end our stay, a celebration of all the incredible experiences we've shared.

As I pack our bags tonight, I can't help but feel a sense of sadness that our Monemvasia adventure is coming to an end. This medieval town has captured our hearts with its timeless charm and rich history. From exploring ancient churches to savoring local flavors, we've created memories that will last a lifetime. Monemvasia is a truly special place, and I'm so grateful that we had the opportunity to experience it as a family.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey back to Germany, filled with stories and souvenirs to share with our friends and family. I know that a part of me will always remain in Monemvasia, a place where history comes alive and beauty surrounds you at every turn. Until next time, Monemvasia, farewell!

P.S. I almost forgot to mention, I did a little research and found out that the Laconian Products Festival usually takes place in Monemvasia, showcasing local gastronomy and entrepreneurship. It's a shame we missed it, but maybe we'll plan our next visit around it!
