Day 4: Delving into Monemvasia's Depths: History, Mystery, and Seaside Charm
Exploring Monemvasia's hidden gems: a WWII shipwreck, ancient cisterns, and the allure of Vathysfairo Bar. A day of history and charm.
Echoes of the Past, Visions of the Present
Today was a day of diving deep – both literally and figuratively – into the heart of Monemvassia Island's history and culture. From exploring the remnants of a World War II shipwreck to wandering through ancient cisterns and enjoying the artistic vibes of a local bar, every moment felt like uncovering a new layer of this captivating place. It’s amazing how much history is packed into this small island, and I’m so excited to share our discoveries.
Discover Monemvasia Island: A captivating journey through time in a stunning medieval fortress town with breathtaking Aegean Sea views.
Our day began with an early start, fueled by strong Greek coffee and the anticipation of exploring Monemvassia Island. The crisp December air was invigorating as we made our way towards the coast. Maximilian, Amara, and I bundled up, ready for our maritime adventure. I was especially excited; I'd read about a WWII shipwreck just off the coast, and the idea of seeing a piece of history resting beneath the waves was irresistible.

We found a local guide who knew the waters well, and soon we were aboard a small boat, heading out into the turquoise sea. The sun glistened on the water, and the view of the Monemvasia rock receding into the distance was simply breathtaking. Even Amara, usually full of boundless energy, was quiet, her eyes wide with wonder as she gazed at the fortress.
As we approached the coordinates, our guide pointed towards a dark shape beneath the surface. It was the WWII shipwreck! I could feel a shiver of excitement mixed with a sense of solemnity. To think that this was once a vessel caught in the throes of war, now resting peacefully as a part of the marine ecosystem, was deeply moving. According to some sources, the wreck may be the remains of the Greek torpedo boat Kydoniai, sunk in 1941 during a German air attack. Other accounts suggest it could be another vessel lost during the war. Whatever its true identity, the site was a powerful reminder of the past.
We donned our snorkeling gear, and I plunged into the cool water, Maximilian and Amara following close behind. The visibility was excellent, and as I swam closer, the ghostly outline of the ship became clearer. Schools of fish darted in and out of the wreckage, and the whole scene felt like something out of a movie. It was a poignant experience, a silent testament to a time of conflict and loss. I tried to imagine the lives of the sailors who once manned this vessel, and the events that led to its watery demise. It was a humbling experience, and one that I won't soon forget.
Back on shore, we decided to explore another of Monemvasia's historical sites: the Wall Cistern. After drying off from our snorkeling adventure, we ventured back into the heart of the medieval town, seeking out this hidden gem. The cistern, an ancient water reservoir built into the walls of the fortress, offered a fascinating glimpse into the ingenuity of the past inhabitants. As we descended into the cool, dimly lit chamber, I couldn't help but marvel at the engineering prowess that allowed them to collect and store water in such a strategic way.

Amara was particularly intrigued by the cistern, peppering me with questions about how it worked and how old it was. I did my best to explain, drawing parallels to the water conservation methods we use back home in Heidelberg. It's always a joy to see her curious mind at work, connecting the dots between different cultures and eras.
After our historical explorations, we were ready for a late lunch. Based on a recommendation from a local, we chose The Athas. The restaurant was bustling with activity, the air filled with the aroma of grilled meats and fresh seafood. We snagged a table with a view of the sea and ordered a selection of traditional Greek dishes to share. The food was simple but delicious, each bite bursting with flavor. Maximilian especially enjoyed the grilled octopus, while Amara devoured a plate of crispy calamari. As for me, I couldn't get enough of the horiatiki salad, the juicy tomatoes and creamy feta a perfect complement to the salty sea air.

Sometimes, the most profound discoveries are made not by seeking the new, but by revisiting the old with fresh eyes.
With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to seek out the Vathysfairo Bar for an evening drink. I had read about its unique atmosphere and artistic décor, and I was eager to experience it firsthand. As we navigated the narrow, winding streets of the kastro, the sounds of laughter and music grew louder, drawing us closer to our destination.

The Vathysfairo Bar was even more enchanting than I had imagined. The walls were adorned with paintings and quirky art pieces, and the lighting was soft and inviting. We found a cozy spot on the balcony, overlooking the rooftops of Monemvasia and the shimmering sea beyond. The music was a mix of funky jazz, blues, and soul, creating a relaxed and convivial atmosphere. Vasilis, the bar's iconic owner with 29 years of experience, greeted us with a warm smile and offered us a selection of his signature cocktails. Maximilian opted for a classic mojito, while I chose a local wine, eager to sample the region's offerings. Amara, of course, stuck with her favorite orange juice, but she was just as happy as we were, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.
As we sipped our drinks and listened to the music, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the experiences we were sharing as a family. Travel has a way of bringing us closer together, of creating memories that will last a lifetime. And Monemvasia, with its rich history, stunning landscapes, and unique charm, was proving to be the perfect backdrop for our family adventure.
Before heading back to the hotel, we took a stroll through the kastro, hand in hand, savoring the magic of the night. The stars twinkled above us, and the only sounds were the gentle lapping of the waves against the shore and the distant strains of music from the Vathysfairo Bar. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Monemvasia's hidden corners, including Chryssafitissa Square, the Galeazza Cistern, and the Monemvasia Bridge. I am also hoping to find some unique gifts for friends and family at the Kornilia Jewellery Shop. I'm excited to see what other treasures this enchanting island holds in store for us.
As I reflect on today's adventures, I am reminded of the importance of embracing the unknown, of stepping outside our comfort zones and immersing ourselves in new cultures and experiences. It is through these encounters that we grow, learn, and connect with the world around us. And it is through sharing these experiences with my loved ones that I find the greatest joy.
Until tomorrow, efharisto, Monemvasia! Thank you for your beauty, your history, and your endless capacity to surprise and delight.
P.S. I nearly forgot to mention! While researching the WWII shipwreck, I came across information about a Beaufighter Mk.X LZ397 aircraft that was shot down near Monemvasia in 1944. While we didn't see any remains of this particular aircraft, it's another reminder of the area's rich and complex history.
I am also making a mental note to pack our adapter and Amara's favorite snacks tomorrow. It is always something, isn't it?
And, I must say, the restaurants here are amazing! I am looking forward to trying Peinakothēkē, Marianthi and Mateo's tomorrow.
Embark on a family adventure to Monemvasia, Greece's medieval gem, for a week of cultural exploration, scenic beauty, and unforgettable experiences.
