A Day Among the Clouds and Cobblestones

Today, Monemvasia revealed even more of its enchanting character. The air was crisp, carrying a hint of the sea, as we set out to explore the upper reaches of this medieval marvel. With Maximilian and Amara by my side, I knew it would be a day filled with discoveries and shared laughter. It’s these moments, exploring new places together, that truly make our family bond stronger.

Our first stop was the famed Acropolis of Monemvasia. The path up was a bit steep, but Amara, ever the energetic one, skipped ahead, her little legs seemingly tireless. Maximilian and I followed at a more leisurely pace, taking in the panoramic views that unfolded with every step. From our vantage point, the terracotta rooftops of the lower town looked like a mosaic, framed by the endless blue of the Aegean Sea. I paused, remembering my childhood in Gampola, Sri Lanka, where the hills were draped in lush tea plantations rather than ancient stone. Yet, the feeling of being on high ground, with the world stretching out before me, was wonderfully familiar.

Reaching the top, we were greeted by the haunting beauty of the Upper Town. Though uninhabited now, the ruins whisper tales of Byzantine emperors and Venetian merchants. We wandered through the remains of stone houses and cisterns, imagining the lives of those who once called this place home. The wind carried their stories, mingling with the scent of wild herbs that grew between the stones. Amara, with her vivid imagination, declared that she could hear the knights of old clashing their swords. I love how travel inspires her imagination.

“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam on distant lands to travel is to live.”

The highlight of the Acropolis was undoubtedly the Holy Church of Hagia Sophia. Perched dramatically on the edge of a cliff, this Byzantine church is a testament to Monemvasia's rich history and resilience. Built in the 12th century, it has served as a church, a mosque, and back to a church again, each era leaving its mark on its stones. Inside, we admired the fragments of murals that have survived the passage of time, their colors faded yet still vibrant. The architecture, a classic example of the cross-in-square style, was both elegant and imposing. Standing there, gazing out through the windows at the breathtaking view, I felt a profound sense of connection to the past.

After descending from the Acropolis, we sought a more grounded experience, a visit to the Poet Yiannis Ritsos Commemorative Plaque. As someone who appreciates the power of words, I was moved to see this tribute to one of Greece's most beloved poets. Ritsos, born in Monemvasia, captured the essence of Greek life and history in his verses. His words, translated into numerous languages, resonate with people around the world. I read aloud a few lines of his poetry to Amara, hoping to instill in her a love for literature and an appreciation for the beauty of the written word. It’s important to me that she understands the world through stories.

With our minds enriched by history and poetry, it was time to treat our taste buds. We headed to Monemvasia Deli - Edodimopolio, a charming shop offering a taste of local delicacies. The aroma of olive oil, herbs, and spices filled the air as we stepped inside. We sampled local cheeses, olives, and honey, each bite a burst of authentic Greek flavor. I was particularly intrigued by the Melitokraso, a traditional honey wine unique to this region. We purchased a few souvenirs, including a bottle of the honey wine and some handmade pasta, to take back to Heidelberg and share with our friends.

For lunch, we opted for something quick and casual at Pita Fresca. This street food spot is known for its creative wraps, filled with delicious combinations of Greek ingredients. I chose a pita with marinated octopus and fava beans, while Maximilian went for the classic pork souvlaki. Amara, of course, wanted pizza, which they happily provided. The food was fresh, flavorful, and perfect for a midday pick-me-up.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we sought a place to unwind and savor the moment. Athivoli, a restaurant known for its warm ambiance and traditional Greek flavors, beckoned. We settled into a cozy table and ordered a selection of meze, including tzatziki, spicy cheese spread and fried sfela cheese. The food was delicious, but it was the atmosphere that truly captivated us. The restaurant was filled with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the simple pleasures of good food and good company. I made a mental note to try to recreate some of these dishes back home, adding a German twist to my Sri Lankan-inspired cooking.

To cap off our day, we decided to indulge in a cocktail at Emvasis Cafe - Cocktail Bar. This stylish bar offers stunning views of the town and the sea. Maximilian and I sipped on expertly crafted cocktails, while Amara enjoyed a refreshing fruit smoothie. The music was mellow, the atmosphere relaxed, and the company perfect. As we watched the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and pink, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this incredible day in Monemvasia.
