Cultural Exploration and Relaxation in San Gimignano
Day 1: Tuscan Towers and Timeless Charm: Discovering San Gimignano
Explore San Gimignano's medieval heart with Ngoc & Hans. Wander through historic piazzas, taste Tuscan cuisine, and uncover hidden gems.
A Warm Tuscan Welcome
After months of anticipation, Hans and I finally arrived in San Gimignano! The journey from Berlin to Florence and then the scenic drive through the Tuscan countryside was nothing short of breathtaking. As a geriatric nurse, I often find myself yearning for moments of tranquility and cultural immersion, and I knew this trip would be the perfect remedy. The rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves were a feast for the eyes, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers. I felt a sense of excitement wash over me as we approached the medieval town, its iconic towers piercing the skyline.
We checked into La Cisterna, a charming hotel nestled right in the heart of San Gimignano. Our room had a lovely view of the square, and we could already feel the town's pulse from our window. After settling in, we were eager to begin our exploration, and our first stop was Piazza del Duomo.

Stepping Back in Time at Piazza del Duomo

Discover the enchanting Piazza del Duomo, a medieval square in San Gimignano, where history, art, and stunning landscapes converge in Tuscany.
Piazza del Duomo is the heart of San Gimignano, and as we stepped onto the brick-paved square, it felt like stepping back in time. The Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, also known as the Duomo, stood majestically at the top of a broad flight of steps. Its Romanesque architecture was stunning, and I couldn't wait to explore its interior, known for its beautiful frescoes. The square was bustling with activity, tourists snapping photos, and locals going about their day. Hans, ever the history enthusiast, was immediately captivated by the Palazzo Vecchio del Podestà and the imposing Torre Rognosa.
We learned that Piazza del Duomo has been the center of religious and political life in San Gimignano since the Middle Ages. It sits at the intersection of the Via Francigena and the ancient Pisa-Siena road, making it a vital hub for centuries. The square's trapezoidal shape and slight incline added to its unique charm. I imagined what it must have been like during the town's golden age in the 13th century, with its lively markets and important public events.
The beauty of San Gimignano lies not only in its well-preserved architecture but also in the vibrant atmosphere that permeates its ancient streets.
A Journey Through Medieval Life at San Gimignano 1300
Next on our list was San Gimignano 1300, a museum that recreates the town as it appeared in the 14th century. I had read about this museum online and was intrigued by its detailed ceramic reconstruction of medieval San Gimignano. As someone who appreciates art and history, I knew this would be a fascinating experience. We walked down Via San Giovanni, a charming street lined with shops and cafes, until we reached the museum.

Inside, we were greeted by a miniature reproduction of the castle of Monteriggioni. The main exhibit was a large, meticulously crafted model of San Gimignano, showcasing the town at its peak with all 72 of its towers. The attention to detail was remarkable; every building, street, and tower was faithfully recreated. It was like stepping into a time machine and witnessing San Gimignano's rich history come to life. The museum also featured scenes of daily medieval life, providing a glimpse into the customs and traditions of the era. Hans and I spent a good hour admiring the intricate details and learning about the town's past. The experience gave us a new appreciation for the architectural heritage that defines San Gimignano.
Admiring Torre dei Cugnanesi
Our exploration continued with a visit to Torre dei Cugnanesi, one of the town's iconic towers. As we walked along Via San Giovanni, we spotted the imposing tower in the distance. Torre dei Cugnanesi is one of the fourteen remaining towers that contribute to San Gimignano's famous skyline. We learned that it dates back to the 13th century and was part of the defensive system connected to the Arc of Becci. The tower's accompanying building features a series of external corbels that support a balcony, adding to its unique character.

From the road leading to the Montestaffoli fortress, we could see the tower's massive corner, which was once part of the initial city wall. It was fascinating to imagine how this tower played a role in protecting the town centuries ago. The Cugnanesi Tower stands as a testament to the strength and grandeur of San Gimignano's past, and I felt a sense of awe as I gazed up at its ancient stones.
A Truffle Hunt Interlude
Before lunch, we decided to indulge in a unique experience: a visit to the Truffle Boutique. San Gimignano and the surrounding region are known for their truffles, and I was eager to learn more about these culinary treasures. The Truffle Boutique was located in Piazza della Cisterna, a short walk from Piazza del Duomo. Inside, we were greeted by the aroma of truffles and a wide array of truffle products. We sampled truffle oil, truffle paste, and truffle cheese, each bite bursting with earthy flavors.

I learned about the different types of truffles, the ideal growing conditions, and the art of truffle hunting. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about truffles, sharing stories and tips on how to best enjoy them. They even offered truffle hunting tours, where you can accompany trained dogs as they sniff out these hidden gems. Though we didn't have time for a full-fledged hunt today, it's definitely on my list for a future visit.
Tuscan Flavors at Cum Quibus - Ristorante Toscano
For lunch, we chose Cum Quibus - Ristorante Toscano, a charming restaurant known for its authentic Tuscan cuisine. The restaurant had a rustic ambiance with exposed brick walls and a lovely courtyard. We started with a selection of Tuscan antipasti, including cured meats, cheeses, and bruschetta. For my main course, I ordered the pici pasta with wild boar ragu, a regional specialty. The pasta was perfectly al dente, and the ragu was rich and flavorful. Hans opted for the Florentine steak, a massive cut of beef grilled to perfection.

The service was attentive, and the staff made us feel welcome. The restaurant also offered a refined tasting menu with expertly paired wines, but we decided to order à la carte. As we savored our meal, we soaked in the atmosphere and enjoyed the simple pleasures of Tuscan life. Cum Quibus was the perfect spot to refuel and experience the region's culinary delights.
Dinner with a View at Ristorante Bel Soggiorno
As evening approached, we made our way to Ristorante Bel Soggiorno for dinner. This restaurant has been a part of San Gimignano's culinary scene for five generations, offering traditional Tuscan dishes with a modern twist. What drew us to Bel Soggiorno was its panoramic terrace, which promised stunning views of the Tuscan countryside. We were lucky enough to snag a table by the window, and as the sun began to set, the view was simply magical. The rolling hills were bathed in golden light, and the towers of San Gimignano stood tall against the horizon.

I started with the ribollita, a hearty Tuscan bread and vegetable soup, while Hans chose the pappa al pomodoro, a thick tomato and bread soup. For our main courses, I had the osso buco, a braised veal shank, and Hans enjoyed the roasted rabbit with herbs. Each dish was prepared with fresh, local ingredients and showcased the flavors of the region. The service was excellent, and our waiter was happy to recommend local wines to pair with our meal. As we finished our dinner, we lingered over a glass of Vin Santo, a traditional Tuscan dessert wine, and savored the moment. Ristorante Bel Soggiorno was the perfect ending to our first day in San Gimignano, offering delicious food and unforgettable views.
Tomorrow's Adventures Await
As we walked back to La Cisterna, the town was quiet and peaceful. The stars twinkled above, and the air was cool and crisp. I felt a sense of contentment wash over me. San Gimignano had already captured my heart with its medieval charm, delicious cuisine, and stunning landscapes. Tomorrow, we plan to explore Galleria Continua, Piazza Sant'Agostino, and soak in another beautiful view. I'm also looking forward to trying Osteria Delle Catene for breakfast, Olivieri Bistrot for lunch, and Ristorante San Martino 26 for dinner. And perhaps a glass of wine at Divinorum Wine Bar. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. Goodnight from San Gimignano!
As I reflect on our first day, I realize that San Gimignano is more than just a picturesque town; it's a living testament to history and culture. I am eager to continue our exploration and share our experiences with you. Stay tuned for more tales from Tuscany!
