Savoring Oaxaca: A Day of Markets, Art, and Gastronomic Adventures

Today was a beautiful exploration of Oaxaca's vibrant heart. From bustling markets filled with aromatic spices and colorful produce to the intricate artistry of local artisans, every moment was a sensory feast. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling – the chance to immerse myself in a culture so different from my own, to taste new flavors, and to see the world through a different lens. Today was a day of discovery, and I can't wait to share it with you.

The day started with the promise of culinary adventures, and our first stop was Tr3s 3istro Restaurant & Oyster Bar for breakfast. The restaurant is located in the upper floor of the Portales del Zocalo in Oaxaca, and offers excellent views of its laurels and the Cathedral. I decided to try the Flamed Oysters au Mezcal, while my friends opted for the Fried Oysters with Mornay Sauce. Both were delicious. The restaurant had a really nice atmosphere, and I enjoyed looking out over the city as we ate. I made a mental note to return for dinner one evening, as I think it would be lovely to see the Cathedral lit up at night.

After breakfast, we ventured into the heart of Oaxacan commerce at Mercado 20 de Noviembre. The market was an explosion of colors, sounds, and smells. Aisles overflowed with fresh produce, handmade crafts, and the enticing aroma of Oaxacan cuisine. I was immediately drawn to El Pasillo de las Carnes Asadas, where vendors grilled various meats. The energy of the market was infectious, and it was fascinating to watch locals and tourists alike navigate the bustling stalls. My friend, ever the adventurous eater, sampled some chapulines (grasshoppers), a local delicacy, while I opted for a more familiar tlayuda, a large, crispy tortilla topped with beans, cheese, and salsa. It was the perfect way to experience the authentic flavors of Oaxaca.

In Oaxaca, every corner holds a story, every meal is a celebration, and every artisan's creation is a testament to the enduring spirit of its people.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to Jacobo & María Ángeles, a workshop renowned for its intricate wood carvings. As someone who appreciates art and craftsmanship, I was eager to see their creations. The workshop is dedicated to the production of figures carved in copal wood called Tonas and Nahuales. We had the opportunity to watch the artisans at work, meticulously carving and painting alebrijes, the brightly colored Oaxacan folk art sculptures. Each piece was a unique expression of creativity, blending traditional Zapotec designs with modern artistic vision. I was particularly impressed by the jewelry workshop, where they combined their knowledge of wood carving with silver. I ended up purchasing a small, intricately carved hummingbird as a memento of our visit. It was inspiring to see how Jacobo and María Ángeles have revitalized the traditional arts and crafts of their community, providing inspiration and opportunity for local youth.

For lunch, we indulged in the culinary delights of El Asador Vasco. The restaurant opened in 1978 and was the first in Oaxaca to offer a formal a la carte service. It has maintained its prestige by offering excellent service and high-quality products. The restaurant boasts a rooftop terrace with a beautiful view of the Zocalo. We started with some traditional Oaxacan appetizers, followed by grilled fish and vegetables. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge after a busy morning of exploring.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Casa Oaxaca el Restaurante for dinner. This restaurant is known for its contemporary twist on authentic Mexican flavors, with Chef Alejandro Ruiz closely connected to organic farming to ensure freshness. The setting, an 18th-century colonial townhouse, added to the charm. I decided to try the toasted insects, including chicatanas, chapulines, and maguey worms. It was a truly unique culinary experience. The flavors were surprisingly delightful, and I appreciated the chef's innovative approach to traditional Oaxacan cuisine.

To cap off the evening, we ventured to Zapotec Mixology Bar. This hidden gem is a bit off the beaten path, adding to its charm. The bar features live music and stunning designs, including intricate ceiling details. The language barrier only added to the experience, as we communicated with gestures and smiles. The cocktails were thoughtfully crafted with fresh ingredients, and I particularly enjoyed the Crem Mol Ngaas. The unique glassware and ancient designs throughout the bar added to the overall appeal. We lingered until closing, enjoying the music and the company of locals and fellow travelers.

Reflecting on the day, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the magic of Oaxaca. The city's vibrant culture, rich history, and warm hospitality have captured my heart. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Esquina Azul Flores and Auditorio Guelaguetza. I'm also excited to try the local cuisine at La Olla, El Olivo Gastrobar, and Hostería de Alcalá. And of course, I'm looking forward to doing some shopping at Marchanta.
