Day 10: Oaxaca's Soulful Sunday: Art, Flavors, and Ancient Echoes
Discover the vibrant heart of Oaxaca with a day filled with art, exquisite cuisine, and the echoes of history at Guelaguetza.
A Day of Oaxacan Delights
Today was a day dedicated to soaking in the essence of Oaxaca, a city that hums with creativity and tradition. From vibrant floral displays to ancient performance spaces, every corner offered a new sensory experience. I find myself continually drawn to the way this city weaves its history and culture into the fabric of daily life, making every moment feel both timeless and utterly present. It’s moments like these that remind me why I traded the predictable comforts of Berlin for the unpredictable adventures of travel.
Our day began with a visual feast at Esquina Azul Flores. This charming corner shop is a vibrant explosion of color and creativity, showcasing the talents of local artisans. The displays of handmade goods were captivating, from intricately crafted pottery to stunning textiles. It was the perfect place to find unique souvenirs, each telling a story of Oaxaca’s rich heritage. I picked up a small, hand-painted ceramic bird, a little piece of Oaxaca to bring back to our apartment in Berlin. Hans will love it. I was so engrossed, I almost forgot my Spanish phrasebook again, just like yesterday!

Oaxaca is a sensory symphony, where the colors, flavors, and traditions blend into an unforgettable experience.
Next, we headed to the iconic Auditorio Guelaguetza. Perched on a hillside, this open-air auditorium is the stage for the famous Guelaguetza festival, a celebration of Oaxacan culture through dance and music. Although the festival itself is in July, being there evoked the echoes of past performances and the vibrant energy of the community. Today, the auditorium was quiet, but I could almost hear the music and see the dancers in their traditional costumes. It was a powerful reminder of the deep cultural roots that thrive in this region. I imagined the colorful dances and music filling the space, a true spectacle of Oaxacan pride. It's amazing to think of the traditions that have been passed down through generations and continue to thrive here.

For breakfast, we indulged in the culinary delights of La Olla. This restaurant, recommended by several locals, is known for its traditional Oaxacan cuisine with a modern twist. I ordered the squash blossom soup, a recommendation I’d read about, and it was a revelation. The presentation alone was a work of art, with the delicate blossoms and seeds arranged beautifully in the bowl. The flavors were subtle yet complex, a perfect reflection of Oaxacan gastronomy. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with artwork by local artists adorning the walls. It felt like a true immersion into the local culture. I made a mental note to try Chef Pilar Cabrera's cooking classes sometime; her passion for Oaxacan cuisine is truly inspiring.

Lunch took us to El Olivo Gastrobar, a place that seamlessly blends Spanish and Oaxacan flavors. The rooftop terrace offered a stunning view of the city, making it the perfect setting for a leisurely meal. We shared a variety of tapas, each bursting with fresh ingredients and innovative combinations. The fig and provolone tapas were a particular highlight, a sweet and savory delight that perfectly captured the essence of the restaurant. The service was fantastic, with the staff eager to recommend pairings from their extensive wine and cocktail list. It’s no wonder this place is a favorite among locals and tourists alike. The atmosphere was lively and convivial, making it a perfect spot to unwind with friends.

In the afternoon, I ventured to Marchanta, a boutique showcasing the best of Mexican design. From clothing to jewelry to home goods, everything in the store was carefully curated and beautifully displayed. I was particularly drawn to the textiles, each piece a testament to the skill and artistry of local weavers. I ended up buying a stunning hand-embroidered blouse, a piece I know I’ll treasure for years to come. The store also supports local artisans and sustainable practices, making it a place where you can shop with a clear conscience. It's wonderful to see businesses that prioritize ethical production and support the local community.

As the day drew to a close, we dined at Hostería de Alcalá, a restaurant housed in a beautiful courtyard. The ambiance was enchanting, with the sounds of a gentle fountain and the soft glow of lanterns creating a magical atmosphere. The menu featured traditional Oaxacan dishes, and I opted for the mole negro, a rich and complex sauce that is a staple of the region. It was a truly authentic culinary experience, a fitting end to a day of cultural immersion. The service was impeccable, and the staff made us feel like honored guests. It was the perfect place to reflect on the day’s adventures.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Parque Ciudad de las Canteras and El Tequio Park, seeking out more of Oaxaca’s hidden gems. And of course, we’ll be sure to find another incredible spot for dinner, perhaps Origen, which I've heard so much about. I’m also looking forward to experiencing the local nightlife at ALAMBIQUE-OAXACA, a Mexican gastropub.
Reflecting on today, I’m reminded of the beauty of embracing the unexpected. Oaxaca has a way of surprising you at every turn, offering a blend of history, culture, and culinary delights that is truly unique. It’s a place that nourishes the soul and awakens the senses, a perfect destination for those seeking an authentic travel experience. I am so glad I decided to come here with my friends, to share in this experience together. It's moments like these that make me appreciate the freedom and flexibility of my life as a travel blogger.
