Whispers of the Past, Tastes of the Present

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of ancient history and modern pleasures that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of Oaxaca. It’s amazing how this city manages to hold onto its roots while still embracing the present. From exploring archaeological sites to savoring exquisite Oaxacan cuisine, every moment felt like a step deeper into the heart of this vibrant culture.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Chocolate de Oaxaca - La Soledad. I’d heard so much about their traditional Oaxacan hot chocolate, prepared with water instead of milk, and I was eager to try it. Sipping the rich, slightly bitter chocolate with a hint of cinnamon, accompanied by a sweet *pan de nata*, was the perfect way to start the day. The aroma alone was enough to invigorate my senses, preparing me for the adventures that lay ahead. It's funny, back in Berlin, Hans always teases me about my love for Vietnamese coffee, but this Oaxacan chocolate might just give it a run for its money!

With our appetites satisfied, we set off to explore the Zona Arqueológica de Atzompa. Perched high in the hills overlooking Oaxaca City, this ancient Zapotec settlement offered breathtaking views of the valley. The site itself dates back to around 650 to 850 A.D. and was once a satellite city of the great Monte Albán. As we wandered through the ruins, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity of these ancient engineers. The massive ball court was particularly impressive, one of the largest I’ve seen in Mesoamerica. What struck me most was the tranquility of the site. Unlike the bustling crowds at Monte Albán, Atzompa offered a peaceful, almost meditative experience. It felt like we had the entire place to ourselves, allowing us to truly connect with the history and energy of this ancient city. My friends were busy capturing photos, while I just sat for a moment, imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago.

In Oaxaca, every corner turned reveals a new layer of history, a new flavor to savor, and a new reason to fall in love with this magical place.
After immersing ourselves in the ancient world, we sought a moment of serenity at the Oaxaca Mexico Temple. While I am not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I am always drawn to places of worship and contemplation. The temple’s modern architecture, blended with traditional Mexican elements, was truly striking. The beautifully landscaped grounds provided a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for quiet reflection. Although the temple was closed for public tours today, we were able to walk around the gardens and admire the impressive façade. It was a peaceful interlude in our otherwise busy day, a reminder to appreciate the simple things in life. I even picked up a pamphlet about the temple; I'm always eager to learn about different faiths and cultures.

Lunch called us back to the city center, where we indulged in a traditional Oaxacan feast at Las Quince Letras Restaurante. This restaurant is known for its gourmet takes on classic Oaxacan cuisine, and it certainly didn’t disappoint. We started with the *tlayudas*, giant crispy tortillas topped with beans, cheese, and our choice of meat. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. I opted for the *mole negro*, a dark, complex sauce made with chilies, chocolate, and spices. It was unlike anything I’ve ever tasted, a symphony of flavors that danced on my palate. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge after a morning of exploration. I made sure to ask our server about the ingredients in the mole; I'm determined to try making it at home when I get back to Berlin, though I doubt I'll ever be able to replicate the authentic Oaxacan taste.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way to Casa Oaxaca Reforma for dinner. This restaurant, helmed by renowned chef Alejandro Ruiz, offers a more modern take on Oaxacan cuisine. The setting was beautiful, a beautifully decorated courtyard with an open-style kitchen. We started with the *ensalada de betabel*, a refreshing beet salad with local cheese and herbs. For our main courses, we sampled the *lechón* (suckling pig) and the grilled octopus, both cooked to perfection. The flavors were bold and innovative, showcasing the chef's creativity and passion for Oaxacan ingredients. The presentation was also exquisite, each dish a work of art. It was a truly memorable dining experience, one that I will cherish long after we leave Oaxaca. I even got a chance to peek into the kitchen and watch the chefs at work; it's always fascinating to see the culinary magic happen behind the scenes.

To cap off our day, we ventured to DESESTRESSE OAXACA, Drinks & Cocktails for a nightcap. This lively cocktail bar in the Centro district is known for its artisanal creations and vibrant atmosphere. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the music and the expertly crafted drinks. I opted for a mezcal-based cocktail, a smoky and complex concoction that perfectly captured the essence of Oaxaca. As I sipped my drink, I couldn't help but smile, reflecting on the incredible day we had. From ancient ruins to modern delights, Oaxaca had once again exceeded my expectations. I'm not much of a dancer, but even I found myself tapping my feet to the music. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

Tomorrow marks the final day of our Oaxacan adventure, and while I'm sad to see it come to an end, I'm also excited about what’s in store. Our itinerary includes a visit to Plaza de la Danza, where I hope to catch a glimpse of traditional Oaxacan dance, and the Aqueduct Arcos De Xochimilco, a historic landmark that I’m eager to photograph. We’ll also be indulging in more Oaxacan culinary delights, with breakfast at Chocolate Mayordomo, lunch at El Morocco, and a farewell dinner at El Tendajon. And of course, we’ll be squeezing in some last-minute souvenir shopping at Tutu&Co. I'm already dreading packing my suitcase; I've bought so many beautiful textiles and handicrafts that I'm not sure how I'm going to fit everything in!

As I sit here writing this, I can’t help but feel grateful for the experiences we’ve had in Oaxaca. This city has a way of capturing your heart, of drawing you in with its rich culture, delicious food, and warm, welcoming people. I know that I will carry these memories with me long after I return to Berlin, a reminder of the beauty and magic that exists in the world. And who knows, maybe Hans and I will even make it back here someday. Until then, *adiós*, Oaxaca, and thank you for everything.
