Adios, Oaxaca!

As my Oaxacan adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the kaleidoscope of experiences that have colored my days. From bustling markets to serene historical sites, every corner of this city has whispered stories of tradition, resilience, and vibrant culture. Today, I set out to absorb a few last drops of Oaxaca's magic, knowing that a part of it will forever remain with me.

The day began with a promise of sweet indulgence at Chocolate Mayordomo. The aroma of freshly ground cocoa beans wafted through the air, beckoning me inside. I savored a cup of their traditional hot chocolate, the rich, earthy flavor a comforting embrace. It was the perfect fuel for a day of exploration.

Next on the agenda was the Plaza de la Danza. Luckily, the Traditional Food Market was taking place there. The plaza buzzed with energy as vendors offered a tempting array of Oaxacan delicacies. I wandered through the stalls, sampling mole negro, crispy chapulines (grasshoppers), and fragrant tamales. The atmosphere was festive, with music filling the air and locals and tourists alike enjoying the culinary delights. I imagined the square filled with dancers during the Guelaguetza festival, a vibrant celebration of Oaxacan heritage.

After the lively plaza, I sought a moment of tranquility at the Aqueduct Arcos De Xochimilco. Located in the oldest neighborhood of Oaxaca, Barrio de Xochimilco, the aqueduct was built in the 1700s to supply fresh drinking water to downtown. As I strolled along the ancient arches, I imagined the city as it was centuries ago, relying on this ingenious structure for its survival. The aqueduct, with its green quarry walls and semicircular arches made of baked clay brick, offered a picturesque escape from the bustling city. Though some areas showed signs of neglect, the historical landmark still possessed a serene beauty. I took some photos and enjoyed the quiet atmosphere.

Lunch was calling, and El Morocco seemed like the perfect place to answer. The Moroccan restaurant offered a delightful change of pace from the Oaxacan cuisine I had been enjoying. The restaurant is known for its Moroccan cuisine, offering dishes such as moussaka, lamb couscous, and Mediterranean salads. The ambiance was cozy, with cushioned seats and colorful decor. I opted for the lamb couscous, and it was a burst of flavors that transported me to another continent. Hans would have loved this place; he always appreciates a good couscous.

With my appetite satisfied, it was time for a little retail therapy. Tutu&Co was a shop I had passed several times, and its colorful displays of clothing and bags always caught my eye. Inspired by Mexican artisans, especially those from the state of Oaxaca, the shop incorporates the colorful culture and traditions into their designs. I purchased a beautiful hand-embroidered bag as a souvenir, a reminder of the vibrant artistry of Oaxaca.

As the sun began to set, I found myself at El Tendajon for a final Oaxacan dinner. This place is the kind of place you could see yourself visiting every day during an Oaxaca adventure. The colorful all-day eatery is known for its vibrant oatmeal bowls and top-notch tacos. I decided to try their famous octopus tacos, and they did not disappoint. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end my culinary journey through Oaxaca.

My time in Oaxaca has been nothing short of magical. I’ve wandered through ancient ruins, savored exquisite cuisine, and immersed myself in the city's vibrant culture. I am bringing home not just souvenirs, but memories that I will cherish forever. Though this chapter closes, I know that Oaxaca will forever hold a special place in my heart. Who knows when I will return to this magical place, but I know I will be back!

Even though my trip is over, I am excited to go back to Berlin and tell Hans all about my adventures. I'm also excited to try out the pottery skills I've learned and cook some traditional Vietnamese dishes for my German friends. It's time for me to go back to my life as a geriatric nurse, but I will never forget my time in Oaxaca. Thank you, Oaxaca, for the memories!
