Oaxaca's Cultural Heartbeat
Today was a beautiful blend of history, art, and flavors that truly captured the essence of Oaxaca. From exploring ancient convents to savoring traditional Oaxacan cuisine, every moment was a sensory delight. It was a day that reminded me why I love traveling – the opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture and experience life from a new perspective.
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Itanoní. This place is renowned for its authentic Oaxacan cuisine, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. I opted for the memelas, a simple yet incredibly satisfying dish of flat masa topped with pork fat, beans, and queso fresco. The freshness of the ingredients and the traditional preparation made it a truly memorable start to the day. Hans would have loved this place, as he appreciates authentic culinary experiences. I made a mental note to try to recreate this dish for him back in Berlin, though I doubt I'll be able to source the same quality of corn here.

After breakfast, our group headed to the Centro Cultural San Pablo. Housed in what was once the first Dominican convent in Oaxaca, founded in 1529, the center is now a hub for cultural and academic activities. The architecture alone was worth the visit, with its beautiful courtyards and well-preserved colonial features. The Centro Cultural San Pablo is committed to Mexican culture and universal human values. We explored the various exhibitions, which showcased contemporary and traditional Oaxacan art. I was particularly drawn to an exhibit featuring textiles created by local indigenous artists. The intricate designs and vibrant colors told stories of their heritage and traditions. I am always deeply moved by art that reflects cultural identity, reminding me of my own heritage and the importance of preserving traditions.

Next on our itinerary was a visit to the Benito Juárez National Park. Just a short taxi ride from downtown Oaxaca, this park offers a refreshing escape into nature. As we entered the park, the air immediately felt cooler and cleaner. The towering trees and lush vegetation provided a welcome contrast to the bustling city. We decided to take a leisurely hike along one of the many trails. The park is home to an incredible variety of bird species, and I was thrilled to spot several colorful birds flitting through the trees. The park was established largely to provide habitat for the many kinds of birds that live and migrate in the area. Although I had forgotten my phrasebook, I was able to ask a local about the different species of birds, and he was happy to help me identify them. The views from the higher elevations were breathtaking, offering panoramic vistas of the city below. It was a perfect spot to reflect on the beauty of nature and the importance of preserving these green spaces. The park was named in honor of Benito Juarez, who was born and raised in Oaxaca.

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.
After our nature escape, it was time for lunch. We made our way to Origen, a restaurant known for its innovative and delicious Oaxacan cuisine. The restaurant's ambiance was modern and inviting, with a touch of traditional Oaxacan decor. I decided to try one of their tasting menus, which offered a sampling of several of their signature dishes. Each course was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The chef clearly has a passion for showcasing the best of Oaxacan ingredients. The waitress explained each dish very well and recommended dishes to customers with certain restrictions. The duck risotto was a standout, as was the grilled salad. The meal was an exquisite culinary experience that I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Oaxaca.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we ventured into the Oaxaca Artisan Market. This bustling market is a treasure trove of handcrafted goods, from textiles and pottery to wood carvings and jewelry. The market is located in the heart of Oaxaca City. I was immediately captivated by the vibrant colors and the energy of the market. Every stall seemed to offer something unique and beautiful. I spent hours browsing the various goods, chatting with the friendly vendors, and admiring their craftsmanship. I was looking for something special to bring back to Berlin for my pottery group. I finally settled on a hand-painted ceramic bowl, which I knew they would appreciate. I also picked up a few embroidered blouses for myself and Hans's mother. The prices were reasonable, and I felt good supporting the local artisans. As I explored the market, the smell of leather mixed with fresh clay, and the rainbow of natural dyes used in textile making. It was a good selection of textiles and other hand crafts at reasonable prices.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Sabina Sabe for dinner. This restaurant and bar is known for its modern Mexican cuisine and its creative cocktails. The atmosphere was lively and chic, with a cool, contemporary vibe. I ordered the pork tacos, which were absolutely delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying salsas added just the right amount of heat. I also tried one of their signature mezcal cocktails, a unique concoction infused with jalapeño and ginger. It was the perfect way to end a day of cultural immersion and culinary exploration. The food is beautifully presented, making every dish a feast for the eyes as well as the palate.

Reflecting on the day, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the richness of Oaxacan culture. From the ancient history to the vibrant art and the exquisite cuisine, Oaxaca has something to offer everyone. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Teotitlán del Valle and Dona Rosa Studio. I'm particularly excited to learn more about the traditional weaving techniques of the region and perhaps even try my hand at creating my own textile. And of course, I'm eager to sample more of Oaxaca's culinary delights! It's experiences like these that make me appreciate the beauty and diversity of our world. I am looking forward to another day of exploration and discovery tomorrow.
I also made a mental note of the Oaxaca Mushroom Festival which takes place in August. I am fascinated by the mystical world of fungi.
