Cultural Immersion in Oaxaca with Friends
Day 11: Oaxaca's Parks and Culinary Delights: A Monday of Exploration
Exploring Oaxaca's serene parks and savoring its authentic cuisine, a day filled with tranquility and culinary adventures with friends.
A Breath of Fresh Air and Flavors of Oaxaca
Today was a delightful blend of serene park visits and exquisite culinary experiences here in Oaxaca. It's amazing how a change of scenery and some delicious food can rejuvenate the spirit. I've found that balancing exploration with moments of relaxation is key to truly appreciating a place, and today was a perfect example of that. I'm excited to share the highlights of my day, from tranquil parks to vibrant restaurants.
The day started with a hearty breakfast at Yu Ne Nisa. I had heard so much about this place, and it certainly lived up to the hype. It was a bit outside the city center, but so worth the trip. Yu Ne Nisa felt unassuming, almost like a garage converted into a restaurant, but the food was unbelievably good. I decided to try their famous tamales and a traditional Oaxacan soup. The flavors were rich and complex, a true testament to the culinary heritage of this region. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. I savored every bite, appreciating the care and tradition that went into each dish. It reminded me of the simple yet profound flavors of my childhood in Buon Ma Thuot, where my grandmother used to make the most incredible Vietnamese dishes from scratch. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these flavors back in Berlin, perhaps with a German twist.

The beauty of Oaxaca lies not just in its landmarks, but in the everyday experiences that connect you to its soul.
After breakfast, Hans and I decided to visit Parque Ciudad de las Canteras. The park is divided into three areas, offering a quiet escape from the bustling city. It's located on the site of old stone quarries, which once supplied the stone for building the city. The park has a quiet atmosphere, and it was nice to sit and relax. It was interesting to see the old green stone showing through the walls of the quarry. The area seemed to be under constant development, with some parts roped off, but it was still a beautiful and serene place to wander around. As we strolled through the park, I couldn't help but reflect on the blend of history and nature. It's fascinating how a place once used for industry can be transformed into a space for recreation and tranquility. I made a mental note to bring my pottery supplies next time; the textures and colors of the stone walls would make for great inspiration. The lotus flower tattoo on my wrist seemed to resonate with the serene atmosphere, a reminder of my Vietnamese roots and the peace I find in nature.

Next on our list was El Tequio Park, a nature lover's paradise. This national park is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, providing a serene escape from city life. With its expansive green areas and winding trails, it's perfect for a leisurely walk. The park is expansive and offers amenities such as playgrounds and a skating rink. The park's trails provided a refreshing escape, and we enjoyed a leisurely walk, taking in the sights and sounds of nature. I was particularly captivated by the diverse ecosystems within the park. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving green spaces in urban environments. I imagined how much the children would love running around here, a thought that always brings a smile to my face. Hans, ever the practical one, pointed out the various sports facilities, mentioning how it's a great place for a run to beat the heat.

For lunch, we ventured to Restaurante El Andariego Cocina Tradicional. This restaurant is known for its exceptional culinary experience, featuring traditional Mexican dishes. The menu offers a delightful array of Oaxacan cuisine, showcasing favorites such as mole, enchiladas, and chicken pastor. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the region. I decided to try the mole, a complex and flavorful sauce that Oaxaca is famous for. It was a culinary masterpiece, a blend of spices and flavors that danced on my palate. Hans opted for the enchiladas, which he declared were equally delicious. The meal was a true celebration of Oaxacan gastronomy. The vibrant colors and rich aromas transported me back to the bustling markets of Buon Ma Thuot, where the air is always filled with the scent of exotic spices and fresh produce. I appreciated the restaurant's commitment to using fresh, local ingredients, a practice I deeply value in my own cooking.

As the day wound down, we decided to experience Oaxaca's nightlife with a visit to ALAMBIQUE-OAXACA, Gastropub Mexicano. This gastropub is known for its Mexican cuisine, mezcal, and creative cocktails. They also have live music every night. It's a modern gastropub that pays homage to Oaxacan and Mexican cuisine. The atmosphere was lively, with music filling the air. I ordered a mezcal cocktail, eager to try this local spirit. The mixology was impressive, and the cocktail was both refreshing and potent. Hans enjoyed a local craft beer, savoring the unique flavors of Oaxaca. The live music added to the ambiance, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and culinary delights. The energy of the place reminded me of the vibrant nightlife in Berlin, where music and culture come alive in every corner. I made a mental note to bring some friends here when we return to Oaxaca; they would love the atmosphere and the mezcal cocktails.

Before heading back to Hotel Camba, we made one last stop at Origen for dinner. The restaurant is known for its innovative and creative dishes, using fresh ingredients from Oaxaca's markets, ranches, farms, and seas. The menu oscillates between risottos, ceviches, and hearty meat dishes, allowing a little of Oaxaca to echo through each dish. I opted for the fish ceviche, while Hans chose the duck enchiladas. The dishes were beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The ceviche was fresh and tangy, a perfect complement to the warm Oaxacan evening. Hans raved about the duck enchiladas, praising the rich and savory sauce. The meal was a fitting end to a day of culinary exploration. The ambiance of Origen, with its old-growth trees and hidden courtyard, added to the experience. It felt like a hidden gem in the heart of Oaxaca. I appreciated the restaurant's commitment to using local ingredients and showcasing the region's culinary talent.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences and connections I've made. Oaxaca has a way of captivating the senses and nourishing the soul. From the tranquil parks to the vibrant restaurants, every moment has been a treasure. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, as we plan to head to Huatulco and explore the coast. But for now, I'll savor the memories of today and rest up for another day of exploration. I am looking forward to experiencing the coast tomorrow, but I know that Hans is also looking forward to visiting Central de Abastos de Oaxaca. He is always looking for a good deal, and I am sure he will find some interesting souvenirs there.
This trip has also made me realize that I need to brush up on my Spanish. I forgot to pack my Spanish phrasebook, and I definitely could have used it today. I also forgot my hat, and the Oaxacan sun is no joke. But these are minor details in the grand scheme of things. The important thing is that I'm here, experiencing the beauty and culture of Oaxaca with my friends. And that's something I'll cherish forever.
