First Impressions of Ourika Valley

Today marked the beginning of our Moroccan adventure, and what a start it was! Leaving the vibrant city of Marrakech behind, Hans and I ventured into the serene Ourika Valley. The shift from city bustle to tranquil nature was immediate, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for what lay ahead. It was a day filled with fragrant gardens, delicious food, and warm Berber hospitality.

The drive from Marrakech was fascinating in itself. The landscape transformed from dusty plains to a lush, green valley as we approached the Atlas Mountains. The air became noticeably cooler and fresher, a welcome change from the city heat. Along the way, we passed small villages clinging to the hillsides, each with its own unique charm. I couldn't help but notice how different life seemed here, more connected to nature and tradition. It reminded me a bit of my hometown in Vietnam, where life also moves at a slower pace.

Our first stop was the Yassmine Restaurant & Cafe for breakfast. We enjoyed traditional Moroccan pastries with mint tea, which was the perfect way to start the day. The restaurant had a lovely view of the valley, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting.

The beauty of a place lies not just in its scenery, but in the warmth of its people and the richness of its culture.

Next on our itinerary was the bio-aromatique de l'Ourika Garden. This garden is a true gem, showcasing a wide variety of aromatic, medicinal, and ornamental plants. As we strolled through the garden, the air was filled with intoxicating scents. I learned about the traditional uses of many of the plants, both in medicine and in cosmetics. It was fascinating to see how the local people have harnessed the power of nature for centuries. The garden is part of Nectarome, which is a company dedicated to producing natural and healthy Moroccan wellbeing products. I was impressed by their commitment to sustainable practices and their efforts to support the local community. We also had the opportunity to participate in a workshop where we learned how to make our own essential oil blends. It was a fun and educational experience, and I came away with a newfound appreciation for the power of aromatherapy.

After the garden, we stopped by Nectarome shop, where I picked up a few souvenirs for my friends back in Berlin. I chose a selection of argan oil products, as I know they will appreciate the natural ingredients and the connection to Moroccan tradition.

Lunch was at Chez Larbi Ourika Restaurant Maison d'hôtes, a delightful place known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and charming atmosphere. The restaurant is nestled in the heart of the Ourika Valley, surrounded by lush greenery and stunning views. We sat on a terrace overlooking the river and enjoyed a delicious tagine, a traditional Moroccan stew cooked in a clay pot. The flavors were rich and complex, and the meat was incredibly tender. Hans, who usually prefers German cuisine, was also impressed by the tagine. The service was warm and welcoming, making us feel like honored guests.

In the late afternoon, we visited Restaurant Timalizen for dinner. This restaurant is another local favorite, known for its traditional Berber dishes and its stunning views of the valley. We enjoyed a hearty meal of couscous and grilled meats, accompanied by live Berber music. The atmosphere was festive and lively, and we felt like we were truly immersed in Moroccan culture.

As the sun began to set, we started our drive back to our guesthouse. The valley was bathed in a golden light, and the scenery was even more breathtaking than before. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the experiences we had today. The Ourika Valley is a truly special place, and I am so glad that we had the opportunity to explore it.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Setti Fadma and explore the waterfalls. I'm excited to see more of the natural beauty of this region and learn more about the Berber culture. I am also looking forward to visiting Khalid Tafza Ourika pottery workshop. I have always been fascinated by pottery, and I am eager to see the traditional techniques used by local artisans. It reminds me of the pottery classes I took in Berlin, where I learned the basics of wheel throwing and hand building. I hope to bring back some unique pieces as souvenirs and perhaps even try my hand at making my own Moroccan-inspired pottery when I return to Berlin.

As I reflect on our first day in Morocco, I am struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Berber people. Despite their limited resources, they are incredibly generous and welcoming. I am also impressed by their deep connection to nature and their commitment to preserving their traditions. This trip is already proving to be a valuable lesson in cultural exchange, reminding me of the importance of empathy, adaptability, and respect – values that I strive to embody both in my personal life and in my work as a geriatric nurse. I am excited to continue our journey and see what other treasures Morocco has in store for us.
