Exploring the Serene Beauty of Ourika Valley, Morocco
Day 6: Chasing Waterfalls and Market Bargains in Ourika Valley
Experience the magic of Ourika Valley: Hike to stunning waterfalls, haggle at local markets, and savor authentic Moroccan flavors.
Finding Paradise in Ourika Valley
Today was a vibrant tapestry of nature, culture, and delicious food, all woven together in the stunning Ourika Valley. Hans and I truly immersed ourselves in the local life, from the refreshing spray of the Cascades Ourika to the bustling energy of the Tnin Ourika market. It was a day of sensory delights and heartwarming encounters that I'll cherish forever.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Elzguerona. The restaurant invited us to disconnect for a 100% nature day. It was a unique place to get close to nature. We enjoyed traditional dishes from the Ourika region and Moroccan cuisine made with vegetables and medicinal plants grown on site. After a breakfast of Moroccan pancakes and strong coffee, we set off to explore the famed Cascades Ourika. The promise of cool waterfalls was especially enticing under the warm October sun. As a geriatric nurse, I always appreciate the healing power of nature, and I was eager to experience it firsthand.
The drive to the waterfalls was an experience in itself. The road wound through the valley, offering breathtaking views of the Atlas Mountains. We passed traditional Berber villages clinging to the hillsides, each one a testament to the enduring culture of this region. The vibrant colors of the buildings against the rugged landscape were a feast for the eyes. It reminded me of the small villages in the mountains of Vietnam, where life moves at a slower, more deliberate pace.
When we arrived at the trailhead, the air was filled with the sounds of rushing water and excited chatter. The path to the falls was a bit rocky, but manageable. As we ascended, the views became increasingly spectacular. The valley stretched out before us, a patchwork of green fields and orchards. The sound of the water grew louder, urging us onward. Along the way, local vendors offered handmade crafts and refreshing drinks. I couldn't resist buying a small, intricately carved wooden box as a souvenir.
Finally, we reached the Cascades Ourika. The water cascaded down the rocks in a series of small waterfalls, creating a refreshing mist that cooled our faces. We took some time to relax and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. Many people were wading in the pools at the base of the falls, but we decided to simply sit and soak in the atmosphere. It was a perfect moment of tranquility, a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. I closed my eyes, breathed deeply, and felt a sense of peace wash over me.
The beauty of the Ourika Valley lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in the warmth and resilience of its people.
After our refreshing waterfall visit, it was time to experience the local culture at the Tnin Ourika market. Luckily for us, Friday is when vendors from nearby villages gather to sell their wares. Tnin Ourika is a bustling market in the heart of the Ourika Valley. The market was a riot of colors, sounds, and smells. Vendors hawked their wares, from fresh produce and spices to clothing and handicrafts. The air was thick with the aroma of grilling meat and sweet pastries. It was definitely a must-visit for tourists seeking an authentic Moroccan experience.
Hans, ever the software engineer, was fascinated by the intricate bartering process. I, on the other hand, was drawn to the vibrant textiles and intricate jewelry. We spent a happy hour wandering through the stalls, haggling for souvenirs and soaking in the lively atmosphere. I managed to snag a beautiful handwoven scarf for a fraction of the original price, much to Hans' amusement. Bargaining is common in the market, so don't hesitate to negotiate prices. The market is also a great place to sample delicious Moroccan street food, such as tagines, kebabs, and sweet pastries. We ended up buying some sweets and local mint tea.
For lunch, we stopped at Café restaurant El Baraka for a delightful midday meal. I savored a tagine, while Hans opted for grilled kebabs. The flavors were rich and authentic, a true taste of Morocco. The backdrop of the Atlas Mountains enhanced the beauty of the market, creating a picturesque setting that is perfect for photography.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, we made our way back towards our guesthouse. But before heading back, we decided to indulge in a pre-dinner drink at Le Salama Sky-bar. Though technically in Marrakech, the allure of a rooftop bar with panoramic views was too strong to resist. We sipped on expertly crafted cocktails as we watched the sun set over the city, the Atlas Mountains providing a stunning backdrop. The sky bar gives you amazing views of the city buzz and the stunning Atlas Mountains. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. The vibrant rooftop sky bar is the perfect place to sip on expertly crafted cocktails, enjoy music and the lively vibe as the sun sets over Marrakech.

Dinner was at auberge Kasbah tifirte. The family-friendly restaurant serves Moroccan cuisine. The Auberge Kasbah tifirte in Ourika offers a sun terrace and a restaurant. It was a cozy and welcoming place. We enjoyed a traditional Moroccan dinner, savoring the flavors of tagine and couscous. As we ate, we reflected on the day's adventures, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and culture of the Ourika Valley.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can still feel the warmth of the sun on my skin and hear the sounds of the market in my ears. Today was a reminder of why I love to travel: to experience new cultures, to connect with nature, and to create memories that will last a lifetime. I am looking forward to tomorrow, where we plan to visit Ourika House and La Rosa Agafay. Before that, we will have breakfast at La Perle D'ourika-Guesthouse & Restaurant. For lunch, we plan to try FEDDAN CAFÉ RESTAURANT. Dinner will be at Restaurant Kasbah Ourika. We are also planning to shop at The Carpet Source. It will be another day of exploration and discovery, and I can't wait to share it with you all.
And as a final thought, I must remember to buy a power adapter and sunglasses! I completely forgot them when packing, and they would have been very useful today.
Visiting the Berber market and the waterfalls was an amazing experience, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area. I have to say though, I was happy to come back to the hotel for dinner, as I do enjoy the comfort and familiarity it brings. As much as I love experiencing new things, I also appreciate having a place to relax and unwind after a long day.
Until tomorrow!
