Florentine First Impressions
Florence! Even with the January chill, the city radiates a warmth that seeps into your bones. Today was all about immersing myself in the heart of the Renaissance, ticking off some major bucket-list items. It was a whirlwind of architectural marvels, artistic masterpieces, and, of course, delicious Italian food. Despite forgetting my plug adapter, everything went pretty smoothly.
My Florentine adventure began with a hearty breakfast at Caffè Gilli. The cafe, with its stunning interior and rich history dating back to 1733, was just the right place to start my day. I sipped on a cappuccino, savoring the rich aroma and creamy texture, while nibbling on a freshly baked pastry. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in this beautiful city.
Fueled by caffeine and excitement, I made my way to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, more affectionately known as the Duomo. Even in the winter, the sheer scale of the Duomo is breathtaking. The intricate marble facade seemed to glow even under the overcast sky. While entry to the Cathedral itself is free, the line snaked around the piazza, a testament to its popularity. I decided to admire it from the outside for now, knowing I'd be back to explore its interior later in the week.

Next on the agenda was Giotto's Campanile, the bell tower that stands proudly beside the Duomo. I purchased a Giotto Pass, which also grants access to the Baptistery, museum, and Santa Reparata, and began my ascent. The 414 steps seemed daunting at first, but with each level, the views became more and more rewarding. I paused at each window to catch my breath and soak in the panorama of Florence unfolding below. The climb was definitely worth it!

Florence is a feast for the senses, a place where every corner holds a story and every moment feels like a scene from a movie.
Reaching the top, I was greeted with a breathtaking 360-degree view of Florence. The terracotta rooftops stretched out before me, punctuated by the iconic dome of the Duomo. The Arno River snaked its way through the city, reflecting the soft winter light. I could see the rolling hills of Tuscany in the distance, a reminder of the beauty that surrounds this urban oasis. I spent a good while simply taking it all in, snapping photos, and etching the scene into my memory.
After descending from the Campanile, I found myself in Piazza della Signoria, the heart of Florentine political and social life. The square was alive with activity, despite the January chill. I admired the Fountain of Neptune, its imposing figure watching over the square. I also took some time to appreciate the sculptures in the Loggia dei Lanzi, each one a masterpiece in its own right. It was fascinating to observe the mix of locals and tourists milling about, all drawn to the energy of this historic space. It was Epiphany today, and I even managed to see some flag-throwing.

Lunch was a must at All’Antico Vinaio. I had heard so much about their *schiacciata* sandwiches, and I was determined to try one for myself. There was a bit of a queue, but it moved quickly, and soon I was holding a massive sandwich filled with flavorful Tuscan ingredients. I opted for one with *prosciutto*, *stracciatella*, and pistachio cream, and every bite was an explosion of flavor. Finding a nearby step, I devoured the sandwich while people-watching, thoroughly enjoying this quintessential Florentine experience. It was a lot of food, but I managed to eat most of it.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of retail therapy at Rinascente Firenze. This department store, located in Piazza della Repubblica, offers a wide range of Italian goods, from fashion to food. I browsed through the various departments, admiring the craftsmanship and design. Although I didn't buy anything, it was a fun way to experience the Florentine shopping scene. I did make a mental note to return to the rooftop terrace for a drink later in the week, as I had heard the views are spectacular.

As the day drew to a close, I made my way to Il Santo Bevitore for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended to me by several people, and I was eager to try it out. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, with dark wood furniture and candlelight creating a warm ambiance. I ordered the roasted duck leg, a Tuscan specialty, and it was absolutely delicious. The duck was tender and flavorful, and the accompanying vegetables were perfectly cooked. I paired it with a glass of local Chianti, and it was the perfect way to end my first day in Florence.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Uffizi Galleries, Palazzo Vecchio, and Loggia dei Lanzi. I'm particularly excited about seeing masterpieces by Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci. I might also check out Rasputin, a bar. For now, though, I'm content to relax and reflect on the incredible experiences of today. Florence has already captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. As I walked back to Hotel Villani, I couldn’t help but smile, thinking about Hans and how much he would have loved this city. Maybe next time, I’ll bring him along.
