Immerse yourself in Florence's art and history, exploring museums, churches, and savoring local cuisine with family. A day of cultural richness.
A Day of Divine Inspiration
Today in Florence was a beautiful blend of art, history, and the simple joys of family travel. We soaked in the city’s spiritual and artistic heart, creating memories that I know we'll cherish for years to come. From the serene halls of the San Marco Museum, Florence continued to enchant us with its timeless beauty.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Caffè Gilli. Established in 1733, this historic café is a Florentine institution, and the perfect place to start our day. We sat at a table overlooking the Piazza della Repubblica, sipping cappuccinos and enjoying delicious pastries. Sofia was particularly taken with the chocolate treats, and Lena and I enjoyed the strong, rich coffee. It’s amazing to think that this café has been serving patrons for almost 300 years! The atmosphere was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in this beautiful city. I even tried a classic Negroni, a cocktail whose history is closely tied to Florence. Sipping it while watching the city wake up was a truly Florentine experience.
After breakfast, we made our way to the San Marco Museum. This museum, housed in a 15th-century Dominican convent, is home to the largest collection of paintings by Fra Beato Angelico. As we walked through the quiet cloisters, I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and reverence. The architecture, designed by Michelozzo, was stunning in its simplicity and elegance. The museum itself is a work of art, and the perfect setting for Angelico's masterpieces. Sofia was fascinated by the colorful frescoes, especially the Annunciation in Cell 3, a true masterpiece of Renaissance painting. Lena, with her architect's eye, appreciated the architectural planning of the convent, inspired by Filippo Brunelleschi. We also visited the cell where Girolamo Savonarola, the famous friar, lived. It was a sobering reminder of the city’s complex history.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
Leaving the museum, we felt a sense of calm and inspiration. Our next stop was the Basilica di Santo Spirito, located in the Oltrarno district. This church, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, is a prime example of Renaissance architecture. Its simple, unadorned façade stands in stark contrast to the ornate interiors of many other Florentine churches. Inside, we were struck by the harmony and balance of the space. The church is filled with artwork, including a wooden crucifix carved by Michelangelo when he was just 17 years old. Sofia was particularly interested in this sculpture, and we spent some time discussing Michelangelo's incredible talent.

After soaking in the art and history of Santo Spirito, our stomachs started to rumble. It was time for lunch at All’Antico Vinaio, a Florence institution renowned for its delicious sandwiches. There was quite a queue, but it moved quickly, and soon we were rewarded with the most incredible focaccia sandwiches. The bread was warm and crispy, and the fillings were fresh and flavorful. I opted for 'La Favolosa', filled with schriciolona, pecorino cream, artichoke cream, and spicy eggplant, while Lena chose a vegetarian option with sun-dried tomatoes and grilled vegetables. Sofia, surprisingly, devoured half of my sandwich, declaring it the best she’d ever tasted. We sat on a nearby bench, enjoying our sandwiches and watching the world go by. It was a perfect Florentine lunch.

With renewed energy, we headed to Piazza del Duomo, the heart of Florence. The Duomo, with its magnificent dome designed by Brunelleschi, is an awe-inspiring sight. The piazza was bustling with activity, as tourists and locals alike gathered to admire the architecture and soak in the atmosphere. We took some time to admire the Baptistery, with its famous bronze doors, including the “Gates of Paradise”. Sofia was fascinated by the intricate carvings and stories depicted on the doors. We learned that Easter week in Florence brings time-honored events to Piazza del Duomo, including the Scoppio del Carro. Although we missed the Easter Sunday event, just being in the square filled us with a sense of history and tradition.

After the Duomo, we decided to do a little shopping. We popped into a Florence gift shop, looking for souvenirs to take back home. I was on the hunt for some high-quality Tuscan olive oil and balsamic vinegar, while Lena wanted to find some handcrafted stationery. Sofia, of course, was looking for a small toy or trinket to remind her of our trip. We found some lovely items, including a beautiful leather-bound journal for Lena and a small wooden Pinocchio figure for Sofia.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to take a break at The Joshua Tree Pub. Despite its name, this pub is a local favorite, known for its friendly atmosphere and excellent selection of beers. We sat at a table outside, enjoying a refreshing drink and watching the crowds pass by. Sofia was happy with her lemonade, and Lena and I enjoyed a local craft beer. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge before our evening activities.

For dinner, I had made reservations at La Giostra, a restaurant known for its cozy atmosphere and delicious Tuscan cuisine. It’s a family-run restaurant, and you can feel the warmth and hospitality as soon as you walk in. We were greeted with complimentary glasses of prosecco and a platter of antipasto, which was a lovely touch. For our main courses, we ordered a variety of dishes, including the pear and ricotta ravioli, which was absolutely divine. Sofia opted for a simple pasta dish, which she thoroughly enjoyed. The staff was incredibly attentive, and the whole experience was simply wonderful. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.
