Westfjords Wanderings: Glaciers, Grub, and Good Times

Today was all about embracing the raw beauty of the Westfjords and indulging in some local culinary treasures. It’s amazing how quickly you adapt to the rhythm of a solo trip, finding joy in the simplest moments and unexpected discoveries. I'm feeling incredibly grateful for this opportunity to immerse myself in Iceland's untouched wilderness, a stark contrast to my usual routine of coding in Heidelberg. While I miss Lena and Sofia dearly, this solo journey is proving to be a deeply enriching experience.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Víkurskálinn Bolungarvík. This place is a gem! I opted for a classic Icelandic breakfast, which fueled me up perfectly for the day's adventures. Apparently, they're known for their hamburgers and pizza, but I was all about embracing the local morning fare. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. It’s these small, local spots that really give you a feel for the culture. It reminded me of the small cafes in Guimarães, where I grew up, always buzzing with friendly chatter and the aroma of freshly baked bread.

With a full stomach, I set off to Drangajökull útsýnisstaður, a viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Drangajökull glacier. The drive itself was an experience, winding through the dramatic fjords and rugged coastline that define the Westfjords. The landscape was breathtaking, with steep mountains plunging into the sea and the ever-present reminder of Iceland's volcanic past. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of the sea and the distant promise of ice. As I drove along Route 635, about an hour northwest of Hólmavík, the anticipation grew.

Reaching the Drangajökull viewpoint was truly something special. The glacier, the northernmost in Iceland, stood majestically in the distance. It's surreal to think that this icy giant has been around for centuries, silently witnessing the ebb and flow of time. I spent a good hour there, simply absorbing the view and reflecting on the sheer scale of nature. It’s moments like these that reaffirm my commitment to environmental conservation. Seeing such pristine landscapes makes me even more determined to contribute to sustainable energy solutions back in Heidelberg.

The beauty of the Westfjords lies not just in its dramatic landscapes, but in the profound sense of solitude and connection with nature that it evokes.

For lunch, I decided to try something different and headed to Thai Tawee in Ísafjörður. I know, I know, Thai food in Iceland might seem a bit out of place, but I had read some great reviews, and I was curious. Plus, after days of traditional Icelandic fare, my taste buds were craving something a bit more exotic. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint! I had a delicious noodle soup that was packed with flavor and spice. It was a welcome change of pace, and the friendly staff made the experience even better. It reminded me of the time Lena and I tried to make Pad Thai at home – let’s just say it didn’t quite turn out as authentic as this.

In the evening, I explored Ísafjörður a bit more, a charming town nestled in the heart of the Westfjords. It’s a place where towering mountains meet endless coastlines, creating a stunning backdrop for everyday life. I ended up at Húsið for dinner and a drink. Húsið, meaning The House, is a bustling coffeehouse, restaurant, and guesthouse all rolled into one. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the menu featured a range of delicious options, from lamb chops to fresh fish. I opted for the seafood soup, which was made fresh with the catch of the day and shrimp. It was absolutely divine – the perfect way to warm up after a day in the cool Icelandic air.

After dinner, I decided to check out the bar scene at Húsið. It turns out that on weekends, Húsið transforms into a lively nightclub with live music. While I'm not usually one for nightclubs, I decided to embrace the local culture and have a drink. The place was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the music and the friendly atmosphere. I even struck up a conversation with a local fisherman who shared some fascinating stories about life in the Westfjords. It’s these unexpected encounters that make solo travel so rewarding.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I plan to visit Kvíar Lodge, which I've heard is another must-see spot in this region. I’m also looking forward to trying some new restaurants, including Jötunn restaurant for breakfast, Tjöruhúsið for lunch, and Logn, restaurant & bar for dinner. And maybe, just maybe, I'll find some time to do a little shopping at Karitas. It’s always nice to bring back a little something for Lena and Sofia.

As I settle into my tent for the night, I can't help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. The Westfjords have a way of stripping away the unnecessary and reminding you of what truly matters: connection with nature, authentic experiences, and the simple joys of life. I am excited to see what tomorrow brings!

And on a side note, I really need to remember to buy insect repellent when I get back to Reykjavik. The midges here are relentless!
