Solo Wilderness Adventure in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve
Day 4: Chasing Waterfalls and Giant Boulders: A Day of Icelandic Wonders
Exploring Iceland's hidden gems: Möngufoss waterfall's serene beauty & Stórurðarlundur's mystical boulders on a solo journey.

Embracing Iceland's Untamed Beauty
Today was a day of incredible contrasts, from the soothing rush of waterfalls to the surreal landscape of giant boulders. It’s days like these that remind me why I crave solo adventures – the freedom to wander, to discover, and to lose myself in the sheer magnificence of nature. Each step deeper into Iceland’s wilderness etches a memory, a moment of profound connection with the earth that I’ll carry long after I’ve returned to Heidelberg.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Einarshusid. This historic house was built in 1902 and has a very interesting history that I enjoyed reading about. The guesthouse provided a charming start to the day. Fueled up, I set off to explore the natural wonders that awaited me.
Möngufoss: A Symphony of Water and Stone
The first destination on my itinerary was Möngufoss, also known as Hlíðarhús waterfall. The hike to the waterfall was an experience in itself. Following the trails from the landing site, I was immediately immersed in the rugged terrain. The path, though well-defined, demanded attention, a constant negotiation with the earth that kept me present and grounded. The landscape unfolded in layers of green and grey, the vibrant flora clinging tenaciously to the ancient rocks. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and wildflowers.
The journey to Möngufoss was approximately 5 kilometers, a distance that took me about two hours to cover. As I approached, the sound of rushing water grew louder, a symphony of nature beckoning me closer. Finally, the waterfall revealed itself, a cascade of pristine water tumbling down a rocky cliff. The sight was mesmerizing, a perfect blend of power and serenity.

I spent a long time at Möngufoss, simply absorbing the beauty of the surroundings. I found a quiet spot to sit and sketch in my travel journal, trying to capture the essence of the waterfall on paper. It’s these moments of quiet contemplation that I cherish most when traveling alone. I thought back to Lena and Sofia, imagining their faces as they took in this view. I made a mental note to find a similar, accessible spot for us to visit together someday. Perhaps in the Odenwald forest, close to home.
Nature is not a place to visit, it is home.
Stórurðarlundur: A Mystical Realm of Boulders
Leaving Möngufoss, I felt invigorated and ready for the next adventure: Stórurðarlundur. This park, located a short distance from Ísafjörður, promised a landscape unlike any I had ever seen. And it certainly delivered.
The drive to Stórurðarlundur was scenic, winding through valleys and along fjords. As I approached the park, the landscape began to change, becoming more dramatic and surreal. Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the unique beauty of the area. Stórurðarlundur is characterized by giant boulders scattered across a lush green valley, creating a mystical and otherworldly atmosphere.

I spent hours exploring Stórurðarlundur, wandering among the massive rocks and marveling at the turquoise pools nestled between them. The scale of the boulders was incredible, some as large as houses, and their arrangement seemed almost deliberate, as if placed by some ancient giant. The walking paths were well-maintained, but I often ventured off the beaten track, eager to discover hidden corners and secret vistas.
The silence in Stórurðarlundur was profound, broken only by the occasional chirp of a bird or the gentle rustling of leaves. It was a place of deep peace, a sanctuary where I could escape the noise and distractions of modern life. I found myself reflecting on my work, my passion for renewable energy solutions, and the importance of preserving these pristine environments for future generations. The solitude amplified my thoughts, allowing me to gain clarity and focus.
A Taste of Ísafjörður
As the day drew to a close, I made my way back to Ísafjörður, eager to sample some of the local cuisine. For lunch, I grabbed a quick and tasty kebab at Siver Kebab. It was the perfect fuel for an afternoon of exploration. I thought of Sofia and her love for fast food. I´ll need to remember to bring her here one day.
For dinner, I decided to try Hamraborg ehf, a local fast-food restaurant known for its pizzas and burgers. I opted for a classic Icelandic lamb burger, eager to taste the local flavors. The burger was delicious, the lamb tender and flavorful, and the toppings fresh and locally sourced. The atmosphere was casual and friendly, and I enjoyed chatting with the locals about their favorite hiking spots and hidden gems in the Westfjords. It was a great way to end a day of exploration.

Before heading back to my accommodation, I decided to check out Skútinn, a local bar. The bar had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with friendly staff and a good selection of local beers. I enjoyed a pint of Icelandic ale, savoring the moment and reflecting on the day’s adventures. The bar was a mix of locals and tourists, and I struck up a conversation with a group of hikers who were planning a trek to Hornstrandir. We shared stories and tips, and I felt a sense of camaraderie that is so often found among travelers.

Tomorrow's Adventure Awaits
As I prepare for tomorrow, my excitement is building. I'll be heading into the heart of Hornstrandir Nature Reserve. I plan to embrace the solitude and challenge myself with longer hikes, pushing my limits both physically and mentally. I am also looking forward to sampling some of the local eateries, such as Stúkuhúsið for breakfast, Hópið for lunch and Cafe Restaurant Dunhagi for dinner. A stop at Hampijan is also on the cards.
Today, however, as I sit here writing in my journal, I’m filled with gratitude for the experiences I’ve had. Iceland continues to surprise and inspire me at every turn. It is a land of raw beauty, a place where nature reigns supreme, and a destination that I will forever hold dear.
I am also reminded that tomorrow, June 9th, is Whit Monday. It is also the second day of the Reykjavík Fringe Festival, offering eclectic performances. And it is also the last day of the Fishermen's Day maritime festivals across Iceland. If I wasn't so focused on the wilderness of Hornstrandir, I would have loved to have attended some of these events. I will need to make sure Lena and Sofia get to experience these festivals some day.
Good night from Ísafjörður, and stay tuned for more tales from the Arctic wilderness!
