Today was a delightful blend of culinary exploration and serene appreciation of Iceland's Westfjords. From savoring local delicacies to soaking in the tranquil atmosphere of Hólmavík, it was a day that perfectly encapsulated the charm and beauty of this remote region. As I continue my solo journey through Hornstrandir Nature Reserve, each day brings new experiences that deepen my connection with nature and Icelandic culture.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Café Riis Hólmavík - Restaurant - Pizzeria & Bar. Situated in the oldest building in town, dating back to 1897, the café exuded a cozy and historic charm. I opted for a classic Icelandic breakfast, eager to fuel up for the day's adventures. The restaurant is known for serving classic Icelandic dishes with an emphasis on high quality and local produce. It was the perfect start, setting a warm and inviting tone for the day ahead. It's amazing how food can be so much more than just sustenance; it's a way to connect with the history and culture of a place.

After breakfast, I decided to explore more of Hólmavík, a town that, despite its small size, is rich in character. The Museum of Icelandic Sorcery & Witchcraft caught my eye, but I decided to save it for another visit, intrigued by the tales of Icelandic witches. Instead, I wandered along the harbor, watching the fishing boats bob gently in the water. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of the sea, a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty that defines this part of Iceland.


For lunch, I ventured to Einarshusid in Bolungarvík. The guesthouse and restaurant is housed in a building from the turn of the 20th century, offering views of the mountains and the sea. I opted for their lunch buffet, eager to sample some traditional Icelandic dishes. The restaurant is known for its pizzas and traditional dishes, so I knew I was in for a treat. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made it a truly enjoyable experience. I even struck up a conversation with a local fisherman, who shared stories of his life at sea. It's moments like these that make traveling solo so rewarding – the chance to connect with people and hear their stories.

In the late afternoon, I treated myself to dinner at Restaurant Galdur - Seafood Restaurant, a seafood restaurant in Hólmavík. The restaurant is known for its fresh seafood dishes, sourced from local waters. I decided on the fish soup, which came highly recommended. It was absolutely delicious – a hearty and flavorful broth filled with chunks of fresh fish and vegetables. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff added to the charm of the place. It was the perfect way to end a day of culinary exploration. I can't imagine Lena not enjoying this place, and I’ll make sure to bring her here one day.

As evening approached, I sought out Edinborg Bistro for a relaxing drink. This bistro is a local favorite, known for its Icelandic food culture and relaxed atmosphere. I savored a local beer, reflecting on the day's adventures. The bistro was warm and inviting, a perfect spot to unwind and soak in the local vibe. I made a mental note to bring Lena and Sofia here sometime; they would love the cozy atmosphere and the taste of Icelandic hospitality.

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting a golden glow over the fjord. I took a final stroll along the waterfront, breathing in the crisp, clean air. The peace and tranquility of the Westfjords were palpable, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Heidelberg. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this remote and beautiful corner of the world.


As I head to bed in my tent, I am already excited about tomorrow's adventure. According to my itinerary, I'll be exploring Drangaskörð [If I manage to get there, I'll be sure to take lots of pictures to share with Lena and Sofia]. I also plan to try some local eateries, including Kaffi Norðurfjörður for breakfast, Siver kebab for lunch, and Hamraborg ehf for dinner. And who knows, maybe I'll even find some time to do some shopping at Neisti. It's exciting to think about the new experiences that await me, and I can't wait to share them with you all.


Tomorrow promises more hiking and exploration, and I'm eager to discover more hidden gems in this remarkable region. The thought of the wild landscapes and the promise of encountering more of Iceland's unique wildlife fills me with anticipation. I'm particularly hoping to spot an Arctic fox, the only native mammal in Iceland.


As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. The Westfjords had captured my heart with its raw beauty, its friendly people, and its delicious food.
