Discover the heart of Colca Canyon with Oliver and Greta as they explore the Canipaco Valley and embrace the local culture and stunning landscapes.
Canipaco Valley Beckons
Today was a day of exploration and cultural immersion in the Colca Canyon. Greta and I ventured into the Canipaco Valley, eager to witness its famed landscapes and delve into the local traditions. From savoring Andean cuisine to trekking through stunning terrains, the day was filled with unforgettable moments.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Turístico Colca in Chivay. Fueling up with local flavors was essential before embarking on our explorations. The morning air was crisp, hinting at the adventures that lay ahead.
As we set out, the sheer scale of the Colca Canyon became even more apparent. At depths of 1000 to 2000 meters, it’s truly one of the world's deepest canyons. The drive to the Canipaco Valley offered stunning views of the Andean scenery. We passed through high-altitude fields and quaint Andean towns, each telling its own story of resilience and tradition.
Exploring Colca Valle del Canipaco
The Colca Valle del Canipaco is known for its picturesque landscapes and rich biodiversity. As we ventured deeper, the valley unfolded before us, revealing dramatic cliffs, lush greenery, and vibrant local culture. It was easy to see why this valley is celebrated as a stunning gateway to the Colca Canyon.

We spent a good part of the morning hiking, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty. The air was fresh, and the views were simply breathtaking. I took the opportunity to practice my landscape photography, trying to capture the immensity and serenity of the valley. Greta, ever the architect, was fascinated by the way the local communities have integrated their lives with the natural environment, building homes and cultivating the land in harmony with the terrain.
The journey through Colca Canyon is not just a trek through geographical wonders, but a passage through time, culture, and the enduring spirit of the Andean people.
One of the highlights was observing the local wildlife. Although we didn't spot any condors today in the valley, the area is known to host these majestic birds, and we kept our eyes peeled, hoping to catch a glimpse of them soaring above. We did, however, see several other bird species, adding to the rich tapestry of life in the valley.
A Taste of the Andes at Sabores Andinos
For lunch, we stopped at Sabores Andinos Colca Restaurant in Yanque. This was more than just a meal; it was an immersion into the local culinary traditions. We savored traditional dishes, each prepared with fresh, regional ingredients. Greta particularly enjoyed the rocoto relleno, a stuffed spicy pepper that's a local specialty. I opted for the chupe de camarones, a delicious shrimp soup that warmed me from the inside out.

As we ate, we chatted with some local artisans who were displaying their crafts at the restaurant. The people of Colca Canyon are known for their intricate textiles and pottery, reflecting their cultural heritage. We purchased a beautifully woven textile as a memento of our visit, supporting the local economy and preserving these traditional crafts for future generations.
Afternoon Exploration with ColcaTrek
In the afternoon, we decided to explore more of the region with ColcaTrek. We chose a moderate trail that allowed us to appreciate the unique ecosystem of the Colca Canyon. The trek was a bit challenging, given the altitude, but we took it slow and steady, mindful of the need to acclimatize.

The trail led us through diverse landscapes, from terraced fields to rocky outcrops. We passed by small, traditional villages, observing the daily life of the Andean people. It was fascinating to see how they continue to cultivate the pre-Inca stepped terraces, called andenes, maintaining their ancestral traditions.
We made sure to stay hydrated, drinking plenty of water and herbal teas made from coca leaves, a local remedy known to ease altitude sickness. The elevation here can be challenging, with viewpoints reaching heights of 4,000 meters. We had taken precautions, spending a couple of days in Arequipa to acclimatize before heading to the canyon.
Evening Relaxation and Local Flavors
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Las Casitas, A Belmond Hotel, Colca Canyon, for dinner. This luxurious hotel offered a perfect setting to unwind after a day of exploration. The restaurant featured diverse mountain dishes crafted from produce grown in their vegetable gardens.

The ambiance was serene, with the majestic Colca Valley as a backdrop. We enjoyed a leisurely meal, savoring the flavors of the Andes and reflecting on the day's adventures. Greta tried a local fruit cocktail, while I opted for a glass of Peruvian wine.
After dinner, we decided to experience the local nightlife with a visit to Restaurant Urpicha Del Colca. It was a cozy spot, where we enjoyed some local music and mingled with fellow travelers and locals alike. It was a great way to cap off a day of cultural immersion and exploration.

Looking Ahead
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Ovalo el condor and Cañoñ de Cotahuasi. I am particularly excited about the prospect of seeing the Andean condors in their natural habitat. We’ll also explore more of the local culture, perhaps visiting Galería ARTES DEL COLCA art & souvenirs for some unique finds.
Today was a reminder of the beauty and resilience of the Andean culture. The Colca Canyon is not just a geographical wonder; it’s a living tapestry of traditions, landscapes, and people. I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience it all with Greta by my side. As we prepare for another day of adventure, I am filled with anticipation and a deeper appreciation for this remarkable corner of the world.
We are taking altitude sickness very seriously during this trip, and so far we are managing it well. I made sure to consult with a healthcare provider before the trip, and we have been taking it easy, drinking lots of water, and avoiding alcohol. It's important to listen to your body and take things slow when you're at high altitudes.
The Colca Canyon has so much to offer, and I'm glad we decided to spend several days here to really soak it all in. It's more than just a trek; it's an opportunity to connect with nature, learn about ancient cultures, and create lasting memories. It's experiences like these that make travel so rewarding, enriching our lives and broadening our perspectives.
And with that, it’s time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. Good night from the Colca Canyon!
