Exploring the Depths of Peru: A Colca Canyon Trek Adventure
Day 12: Condors, Canyons, and Crafts: A Day of Awe in Colca
Experience the majestic Colca Canyon, witness condors in flight, and discover local artistry in a day of unforgettable Peruvian sights.
A Canyon's Embrace
Today was a sensory overload in the best possible way. From the soaring heights where condors dance on the wind to the vibrant marketplace brimming with handcrafted treasures, Colca Canyon revealed its many facets. It was a day of breathtaking vistas, cultural immersion, and delicious flavors, etching memories that Greta and I will cherish long after we've left Peru.
Our day began early, fueled by anticipation and a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Turístico Misti Wasi in Chivay. The restaurant had a local charm, and while the reviews online were mixed, we found the service friendly and the food satisfying. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast, while Greta enjoyed some fresh fruit and yogurt. With a full stomach, we set off towards our first destination: the famed Ovalo el Condor.
Experience the thrill of off-roading and stunning Andean landscapes at Ovalo el Condor in Chivay, Peru, a unique adventure for every traveler.
The drive itself was an experience. The landscape transformed with every turn, from rolling hills dotted with quaint villages to the stark, dramatic beauty of the canyon rim. As we approached Ovalo el Condor, the air grew crisper, and the views became increasingly panoramic. We parked the car and joined the small crowd of fellow travelers, all eagerly scanning the skies.
And then, they appeared. Majestic Andean condors, with their impressive wingspans, soared effortlessly on the thermal currents. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight, watching these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. They circled above us, close enough to make out the details of their plumage, before gracefully gliding into the depths of the canyon. I managed to snap a few photos, hoping to capture the grandeur of the moment, but no image could truly do justice to the experience.
Witnessing the condors in flight was a humbling reminder of the raw power and beauty of nature, a spectacle that transcended mere observation and became a deeply felt connection to the wild heart of Peru.
After spending a good hour at Ovalo el Condor, soaking in the views and marveling at the condors, we continued our journey towards Cañoñ de Cotahuasi.
Explore the breathtaking beauty of Cañoñ de Cotahuasi, one of the deepest canyons in the world, rich in biodiversity and culture.
While Colca Canyon is stunning, I was curious to see what Cotahuasi, known as one of the deepest canyons in the world, had to offer. The drive to Cotahuasi was longer and more challenging, with winding roads and rugged terrain, but the scenery was well worth the effort.
As we approached the canyon, the landscape shifted again, becoming even more dramatic and desolate. The sheer scale of Cotahuasi was breathtaking, a vast chasm carved into the earth over millennia. We stopped at several viewpoints along the rim, each offering a unique perspective on the canyon's immensity. The sense of solitude and remoteness was palpable, a stark contrast to the bustling tourist spots we had visited earlier in the trip.
For lunch, we decided to head back to Chivay and try MARAY carnes y pizzas a la piedra volcánica.
Experience traditional Peruvian flavors at MARAY - home to exquisite volcanic stone-grilled meats and gourmet pizzas in Arequipa.
The reviews online suggested it was a popular spot, and we were both craving some hearty food after our canyon explorations. The restaurant was indeed bustling, filled with locals and tourists alike. I opted for one of their signature meat dishes cooked on a volcanic stone, while Greta chose a pizza. The food was delicious and satisfying, the perfect fuel for the afternoon's adventures.
With our appetites sated, we ventured into Chivay to explore the local shops. We stumbled upon Galería ARTES DEL COLCA art & souvenirs.

A charming little gallery showcasing the work of local artists. I was immediately drawn to the vibrant colors and intricate designs of the handmade crafts. Greta, with her architect's eye, appreciated the craftsmanship and attention to detail.
We spent a pleasant hour browsing the gallery, chatting with the friendly owner, and learning about the different art forms and techniques used by the local artisans. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted notebook, its cover adorned with scenes of the Colca Canyon. Greta found a delicate silver pendant, crafted in the shape of a condor, a perfect memento of our day. It was great to support local artists and take home a piece of Colca's unique culture.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to El Refugio for dinner.

This restaurant was a welcome retreat after a long day. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, with a fireplace crackling in the corner. We enjoyed a delicious meal of traditional Peruvian cuisine, savoring the flavors and reflecting on the day's adventures.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Colca Trek Lodge and the Huarancante area. I'm particularly excited about the prospect of seeing more of the canyon's diverse landscapes and perhaps even spotting more wildlife. Before heading back to the hotel, we are planning to visit the bar 13 Monjas.
As I sit here now, writing in my travel journal, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we had today. Colca Canyon is a truly special place, a land of stunning natural beauty, vibrant culture, and warm, welcoming people. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
The portable solar charger would have been great today, now that I think about it. And I definitely could have used more memory cards for the camera!
