A Day of Discoveries in the Colca Valley
Today was all about embracing the raw beauty and history tucked away in the Colca Valley. Greta and I set out with a sense of adventure, ready to explore the hidden corners of this magnificent landscape. Little did we know, we were about to stumble upon breathtaking waterfalls and a bridge that whispers tales of the Inca empire.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Alpaca Chef in Yanque. I opted for some local eggs, while Greta enjoyed a bowl of quinoa porridge. What made the meal even better were the stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It’s amazing how a good meal combined with a great view can set the tone for the entire day. The Alpaca Chef was beautifully decorated and very clean.
With our stomachs full and spirits high, we hopped in our trusty rented jeep and headed towards our first destination: the Catarata de Huaruro. The drive itself was an adventure, with winding roads offering panoramic views of the valley. As we got closer, the landscape transformed into a rugged, almost surreal terrain. We parked the car and started trekking, the sound of rushing water growing louder with each step.
The hike to Catarata de Huaruro was more challenging than we anticipated, but that made reaching the waterfall even more rewarding. The trail was narrow and at times steep, with loose rocks underfoot. I was glad I had my hiking boots on, even though I had forgotten my portable solar charger back at the hotel. The views along the way were nothing short of spectacular, with the Colca Canyon stretching out before us in all its glory. After a couple of hours of hiking, we finally arrived at the Catarata de Huaruro. The sight of the water cascading down the rocks was simply mesmerizing. The power of nature was on full display, and we stood there for a long time, just soaking it all in. I took out my camera and tried to capture the moment, but no photo could truly do justice to the sheer beauty of the waterfall. Greta, ever the adventurer, even dared to dip her toes in the icy water.

The best view comes after the hardest climb.
After spending a good amount of time at the waterfall, we started making our way back, feeling invigorated and refreshed. The hike back was just as challenging, but the thought of lunch kept us going. By the time we reached the car, we were both starving. We drove to the Colca Buffet Restaurant for lunch. The restaurant had a wide selection of local dishes, and we piled our plates high with everything from alpaca stew to causa rellena. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventure. I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about the alpaca stew at first, but it turned out to be surprisingly delicious. Greta loved the causa rellena, a layered potato dish with avocado and chicken. We washed it all down with some refreshing chicha morada, a traditional Peruvian drink made from purple corn. The Colca Buffet Restaurant was on the touristy side, but the food was good and the service was friendly.
With our bellies full, we set off to explore the Puente Inca. This ancient stone bridge spans the Colca River and offers breathtaking views of the canyon. It’s a testament to the ingenuity of the Inca civilization. As we walked across the bridge, we couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like back in the days of the Inca Empire. The bridge is made of stone with two lanes for cars and features a mountain viewpoint and a path to explore the valley.

The Puente Inca was built during the Tahuantinsuyo period and was frequently crossed by the Inca to reach the hot springs. I took some photos of Greta standing on the bridge, with the canyon as a backdrop. She looked like a modern-day Inca princess, ready to conquer the world. The tranquility and safety of the area added to the experience.
Before heading back to the hotel, we decided to stop by Artesanias Intichay, a local artisan shop. I was hoping to find a unique souvenir to take back home to Heidelberg. The shop was filled with colorful textiles, ceramics, and jewelry. Greta was immediately drawn to a beautiful hand-woven shawl, while I was eyeing a ceramic alpaca figurine. After much deliberation, we both made our purchases. Greta got her shawl, and I got my alpaca. Now I just need to find a good spot for it in our living room, maybe next to my collection of craft beers.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Urpicha Del Colca, known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy ambiance, with lovely decor and a spectacular interior that made us feel relaxed. We started with some trout and soup, both of which were delicious. For our main courses, Greta ordered the lomo saltado, while I went for the rocoto relleno, a stuffed pepper dish that packed a serious punch. The staff was appealing, and the service was prompt. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with adventure and discovery.

As we drove back to the hotel, I couldn't help but reflect on the incredible experiences we had today. From the majestic Catarata de Huaruro to the historic Puente Inca, we had witnessed the beauty and history of the Colca Valley firsthand. It was a day that I will never forget. Greta was already fast asleep in the passenger seat, her shawl wrapped around her like a cozy cocoon. I smiled and gently stroked her hair, feeling grateful for having her by my side on this amazing journey.
Tomorrow, we are planning to do some more trekking, exploring the Peruvian Colca Trails. I am hoping to spot some condors, the majestic birds that soar through the Colca Canyon. I’ve heard that the views from the trail are breathtaking, and I can’t wait to see them for myself. Greta is also excited about tomorrow's spa and hot springs at the Colca Lodge. After all this hiking, we could both use some pampering. I might even try one of those traditional Andean massages I’ve heard so much about. I am also looking forward to trying the local cuisine at Tradicion Colca. Who knows what culinary delights await us?
As I sit here in our hotel room, typing away on my laptop, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Peru has exceeded all my expectations, and I am already looking forward to the adventures that lie ahead. I think I will have a glass of local beer before going to sleep. Prost!
