Day 7: Conquering the Colca Canyon: A Day of Breathtaking Views and Local Flavors
Experience the majestic Colca Canyon with Oliver and Greta as they trek through stunning landscapes and savor authentic Peruvian cuisine.
Trekking Through Time
Today was a day of immersing ourselves in the raw beauty and rich culture of the Colca Canyon. Leaving the cozy comforts of our accommodation, Greta and I set out to experience firsthand why this place is so revered. From the challenging treks to the delightful local cuisine, every moment was a testament to the canyon's allure.
The morning started with a hearty breakfast at RestoBar international in Chivay. Fuelling up with a mix of local and international fare was essential, knowing we had a day of trekking ahead. The crisp morning air hinted at the adventures to come, and I made sure to charge my camera, mindful of almost forgetting my portable solar charger – a lesson learned from our pre-trip packing mishaps. Greta, ever the planner, double-checked our water bottles and snack supply. It's these small details that make our travels together so seamless. We were both eager to start our trek with Trek The Colca.

The initial part of our trek was nothing short of awe-inspiring. The sheer scale of the canyon is hard to put into words; photos simply don't do it justice. As we descended, the landscape transformed around us, revealing layers of geological history etched into the canyon walls. The trail was challenging, but in a way that invigorated us. I found myself thinking about my hikes in the Odenwald Forest back in Germany, but this was a different beast altogether. The air was thinner, the sun more intense, and the scenery undeniably more dramatic.
The Colca Canyon doesn't just offer views; it offers a perspective, a humbling reminder of nature's grandeur and the enduring spirit of the people who call it home.
We met our guide, Edgar from Colca Canyon Trekking Edgar, who shared fascinating insights into the local flora, fauna, and the canyon's history. Edgar's knowledge really enriched the experience, turning a simple hike into an educational journey. He pointed out various medicinal plants and explained how the local communities have thrived in this environment for centuries. I was particularly intrigued by the ingenious irrigation systems they've developed to cultivate the terraced fields along the canyon walls.

Around midday, we stopped for lunch at Restaurant Turístico Colca. The traditional Peruvian dishes were a welcome treat after our morning exertion. We savored every bite, from the hearty soups to the flavorful alpaca skewers. I even tried a local beer, which had a unique, earthy taste. It was a perfect opportunity to relax and soak in the panoramic views of the canyon. Greta, of course, took the time to sketch the landscape in her travel journal, capturing the essence of the moment with her artistic flair.

After lunch, we continued our trek, encountering more stunning vistas and unique geological formations. The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the canyon, creating a play of light and shadow that was simply mesmerizing. We passed through small villages, observing the traditional way of life of the local people. Their colorful textiles and intricate handicrafts were a testament to their rich cultural heritage. I couldn't resist buying a small, hand-woven bracelet as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of our time here.
As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves in Chivay, the main town in the Colca Canyon. Before dinner, we decided to stop by Rest LOS PORTALES DE CHIVAY for a well-deserved drink. The bar had a lively atmosphere, filled with locals and tourists alike. We chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and experiences from our respective journeys. It's always fascinating to hear about other people's adventures and gain new perspectives on the world.

For dinner, we opted for Restaurant Incafe, known for its cozy ambiance and delicious Peruvian cuisine. We indulged in a hearty meal of lomo saltado and causa, savoring the authentic flavors of the region. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a testament to its popularity among locals and tourists alike.

Reflecting on the day, I felt an immense sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience the Colca Canyon. It's a place that truly captivates the senses and nourishes the soul. The rugged landscapes, the vibrant culture, and the warm hospitality of the local people have left an indelible mark on my heart.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore Catarata de Huaruro and Puente Inca. I'm particularly excited to see the waterfall, as I've heard it's a hidden gem within the canyon. We'll also be stopping by Artesanias Intichay to pick up some more souvenirs, perhaps a traditional Peruvian hat for Greta. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this extraordinary corner of the world. We plan to have breakfast at Restaurant Alpaca Chef, lunch at Colca Buffet Restaurant and dinner at Restaurant Urpicha Del Colca.
As I sit here writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. The Colca Canyon has a way of stripping away the unnecessary and reminding you of what truly matters: connection, appreciation, and the simple joy of experiencing something new. I'm grateful to share these moments with Greta, my partner in life and adventure. And I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings, as we continue to explore the depths of Peru together.
