Today marked the beginning of our grand adventure in Peru, and what better way to kick it off than by plunging into the depths of the Colca Canyon? Greta and I have been anticipating this trek for months, and the reality far exceeded our expectations. The sheer scale of the canyon, combined with the vibrant culture of the local communities, has already left an indelible mark on us.

Our day began incredibly early, with a 3:00 AM pickup. It felt a bit brutal, but knowing what awaited us, I was surprisingly energized. We met our tour group, a mix of fellow travelers, and set off towards Chivay, the gateway to the Colca Canyon. The drive was long, but the anticipation kept us awake, and I even managed to snap a few pre-dawn photos of the countryside as the sky began to lighten. October in Colca Canyon brings mild days and cool nights. The temperature was perfect for layering, which is always a plus for someone like me who appreciates being prepared for anything. I was grateful I had my trusty travel journal to jot down my first impressions. Greta, ever the pragmatist, made sure we both had our reusable water bottles filled and ready to go.

Our first stop was in Chivay for breakfast at Restaurant Turístico Colca. I opted for the buffet, eager to sample some local flavors. They had a wide array of options, and I particularly enjoyed the *cerviche* and quinoa. Greta, always health-conscious, loaded up on fresh fruit and some local bread. The reviews I had read mentioned the friendly service, and it didn't disappoint. It was a great way to fuel up before heading into the canyon.

With our stomachs full, we continued to the Mirador Cruz del Cóndor, the famed condor viewpoint. As we approached, the landscape transformed into a dramatic panorama of towering cliffs and plunging depths. The air was crisp and clean, and the views were simply breathtaking. October is considered a good time to spot condors, so our hopes were high. Upon arrival, we joined a gathering of other eager tourists, all scanning the skies. The viewpoint sits at an elevation of 3,270 meters, offering stunning views of the canyon.

Sometimes the best views come after the hardest climbs, both literally and figuratively.

And then, they appeared. First one, then another, and soon several majestic Andean condors were soaring effortlessly above us. Their massive wingspans, reaching up to 3 meters, were truly awe-inspiring. Watching them glide through the air, riding the thermal currents, was an experience I'll never forget. I managed to capture some photos, though no image could truly capture the grandeur of the moment. Greta was equally mesmerized, and we spent a good hour simply watching these magnificent birds in their natural habitat. Apparently, the best time to see the condors is between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM, and we were right on time.

After the condor viewing, we made several stops at other viewpoints along the canyon rim. Each offered a unique perspective, showcasing the incredible depth and scale of the Colca Canyon. We visited the pre-Inca terraces of Antawilke, marveling at the ingenuity of ancient agricultural practices. The landscape was dotted with small villages, each with its own distinct character. We also stopped in the town of Maca, known for its beautiful colonial church.

For lunch, we headed to Sabores Andinos Colca Restaurant in Yanque. This charming spot offered a taste of authentic Andean cuisine, and we were eager to try some local specialties. I opted for the *trucha frita* (fried trout), while Greta chose a quinoa soup. Both were delicious, and the service was incredibly friendly. It's these kinds of authentic experiences that I truly cherish when traveling.

As the day drew to a close, we considered stopping by the Sunset Rooftop Bar. I'd read about it and thought it would be a great way to unwind after a long day of exploring. However, we decided to head back to our accommodation to rest up for tomorrow's adventures. October evenings in Colca can be quite cool, so we were glad to have packed warm clothing.

Reflecting on the day, the Colca Canyon has already exceeded my expectations. The dramatic landscapes, the majestic condors, and the vibrant local culture have made for an unforgettable experience. I'm particularly grateful that Greta and I get to share these moments together, strengthening our bond as we explore the world. I did miss my portable solar charger, especially with all the photos I was taking, and I definitely wished I had brought extra memory cards for the camera. A lesson learned for future adventures!

Tomorrow, we are planning to descend into the canyon itself, visiting Sangalle and perhaps even trying out the Colca Zip-Lining. I'm excited for the challenges and rewards that await us as we continue our exploration of this incredible region of Peru. I need a good night's sleep to prepare for our trek down into the canyon. I'm looking forward to sharing more of our journey with you all soon!

And as I sit here, penning these thoughts, I can't help but feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such incredible beauty and culture. Peru, you have already stolen a piece of my heart.

I'm eager to see what tomorrow brings!

Safe travels,

Oliver
