Exploring the Depths of Peru: A Colca Canyon Trek Adventure
Day 2: Plunging into Sangalle Oasis and Soaring Above Colca Canyon
Experience the magic of Colca Canyon! Descend into the lush Sangalle Oasis, zip-line across breathtaking views, and savor Peruvian flavors.
Oasis Dreams and Zipline Screams
Today was a day of stark contrasts, from the tranquil depths of an oasis to the adrenaline-pumping heights of a zipline. It’s funny how travel throws these experiences at you, sometimes serene, sometimes exhilarating, but always memorable. It's these kinds of days that remind me why Greta and I traded our comfortable Heidelberg life for this adventure.
Our morning began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Urpicha Del Colca in Yanque. I opted for the Novo-Andina cuisine, eager to taste the organic, traditional flavors of the region. It was a delightful start, fueling us up for the physical challenges that lay ahead. I made sure to grab an extra bottle of water, remembering the tips I had read about the high prices down in the Oasis.
The descent into Sangalle, often called the 'Oasis of Colca,' was nothing short of magical. As we zigzagged down the horseshoe-shaped path, the landscape transformed dramatically. The arid, rocky terrain gave way to lush greenery, palm trees, and the promise of cool, refreshing waters. The October sun beat down on us, but the anticipation of reaching the bottom kept us going. I was glad I'd packed plenty of sunscreen; the sun at this altitude is no joke. Greta, ever the architect, was fascinated by the way the terraced landscape blended with the natural contours of the canyon. We took our time, snapping photos and marveling at the ever-changing views.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found in the most unexpected places, where nature's beauty and thrilling experiences intertwine.
Reaching Sangalle felt like stepping into another world. The oasis was a vibrant tapestry of vegetation, with the gentle sounds of the Colca River providing a soothing soundtrack. We found a cozy spot by one of the heated pools and took a well-deserved break. The warm water was incredibly inviting after the long trek down. I even managed a short swim, feeling the tension melt away from my muscles. Greta sketched in her travel journal, capturing the essence of this hidden paradise.
Lunch at El Balcón de Don Zacarías was a welcome treat after our trek. The restaurant offered stunning views of the canyon, and we savored traditional Peruvian dishes while enjoying the scenery. Greta went for a hearty soup, while I decided on the Lomo Saltado, a classic stir-fry that never disappoints.

With renewed energy, we headed for our next adventure: Colca Zip-Lining. I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous. Heights aren't exactly my forte, but Greta was enthusiastic, and I didn't want to miss out on the experience. Plus, I figured it would make for a great story on the blog.

The staff at Colca Zip-Lining were fantastic, prioritizing safety above all else. They kitted us out with certified equipment and gave us clear instructions. I opted for one of the less extreme courses to start, while Greta, the daredevil, immediately chose the “monster” zipline. As I stood on the platform, looking out over the vast expanse of the Colca Canyon, my heart skipped a beat. But then, I took a deep breath and launched myself into the air.
The feeling of flying through the canyon was exhilarating ! The wind rushed past my face, and the landscape blurred beneath me. I let out a whoop of joy, feeling a surge of pure adrenaline. Greta, of course, was already halfway across, striking a pose for the camera. By the end of the course, even I was tempted to try the upside-down ride. Maybe next time.
Before dinner, we stopped by Galería ARTES DEL COLCA art & souvenirs. I was hoping to find a unique piece to bring back to Heidelberg, something that would capture the spirit of our Colca Canyon adventure. The gallery had a wonderful collection of handmade items, representing the local culture and heritage. I ended up buying a small, hand-carved condor, a reminder of the majestic birds we hoped to see in the coming days. Greta purchased one of the handmade notebooks created by local artists.

Dinner at Restaurant Turístico Misti Wasi was a fitting end to our action-packed day. We shared stories and laughed about our ziplining escapades. I chose the trout, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Greta enjoyed the Ceviche. The atmosphere was lively, and we felt a sense of camaraderie with the other travelers who were also winding down after a day of exploring the canyon.

As we headed back to our accommodation, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the peaceful oasis of Sangalle to the thrilling heights of the zipline, we had experienced the Colca Canyon in all its glory. And tomorrow, we will explore Uyo Uyo and the Mirador de Achachihua. I’m excited to see what new wonders await us as we continue our journey through this incredible landscape.
The weather in Colca Canyon in October is quite pleasant, with average high temperatures around 71°F (21°C) and low temperatures around 48°F (9°C). We have had mostly clear skies, with a slight chance of rain. It's perfect for hiking and outdoor activities, though it can get chilly at night, so packing warm clothing is essential.
Tonight, as I write this, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such incredible places with my amazing wife. It's moments like these that make all the challenges of travel worthwhile. And who knows what tomorrow will bring? That's the beauty of adventure, isn't it?
Tomorrow, we plan to visit Uyo Uyo, an archaeological site, and the Mirador de Achachihua for panoramic views. We’ll also grab breakfast at Restaurant Incafe, lunch at MARAY carnes y pizzas a la piedra volcánica, and dinner at Las Terrazas. If time allows, we might check out Pachamama Home, a local bar.
